Hot Jewelry Trends for The Red Carpet

January 31, 2012

Statement-making jewelry is stealing the spotlight on the red carpet this Award Season. Here’s another one of our favorite looks: Shoulder Dusting Earrings

Julianne Moore definitely brought her fashion A-game as she worked the red carpet in a black Chanel frock before heading inside for Tinseltown festivities. Julianne’s vibrant Fred Leighton tassel earrings added a pop of color to her Chanel couture gown. Incorporate some fringed flair into your evening ensemble with Southwestern-inspired extra-long danglers.

Give your ears a break once in awhile from these long drop style earrings, or the one’s that weigh 2lbs.  The weight can actually pull on your earlobes, causing them to elongate over time, not pretty! A simple ball stud or gem stud will still show off your ears in style but keep you comfortable all day long and keep your ears happy too!

Divabetic: Red Carpet Jewelry

Statement-making jewelry is stealing the spotlight on the red carpet this Award Season. One of our favorite looks: Chunky Bib Necklaces

Model and TV host, the fabulous Heidi Klum redefined the meaning of “blue collar” with this turquoise and diamond Lorraine Schwartz necklace. Decorate your décolletage with natural stones for a look that’s down-to-earth and dramatic.

Heidi pulled this look off by pairing her jewelry with a subdued dress.  When you want to wear big and bold jewelry, don’t wear prints ‑- they just don’t get along.

Wearing bold jewelry takes confidence and fashion know-how. It says to the world, “I’m no shrinking violet, and I’m okay with standing out in a crowd.” What it shouldn’t scream is, “I am over-accessorizing with the wrong outfit!”

Keep in mind, the larger a stone, the less real it looks.

Divabetic Salutes Mary Tyler Moore

January 30, 2012

Divabetic: Mary turns our World on with a smile!

Mary Tyler Moore made it after all.

The 75-year-old actress, diabetes activist and DIVA-betic, who as Mary Richards “turned the world on with her smile” in her groundbreaking 1970s sitcom “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” received the lifetime achievement award at Sunday night’s 18th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.

“MTM. There’s probably not a person in the civilized world who doesn’t know what that means,” said Dick Van Dyke, her former co-star in the equally appealing 1960s sit-com “The Dick Van Dyke show,” as he introduced her.

He noted Moore’s achievements as an Oscar-nominated actress, a dancer and a Hollywood executive whose MTM Enterprises has produced several other hit TV shows.

As she accepted her award, Moore revealed how the civilized world almost never did hear of MTM, who was told in the opening theme song of her show each week, “You’re gonna make it after all.”

When she entered show business at age 18 in 1955, Moore said, there were already six others Mary Moores in the Screen Actors Guild.

Told to change her name, she quickly added Tyler, the middle name of both her and her father, George.

“I was Mary Tyler Moore. I spoke it out loud. Mary Tyler Moore. It sounded right so I wrote it down on the form, and it looked right,” she said. “It was right. SAG was happy, my father was happy, and tonight, after having the privilege of working in this business among the most creative and talented people imaginable, I too am happy, after all.”

Our entertaining brand of diabetes wellness outreach was inspired by the late R & B legend, Luther Vandross, and it is in his honor that we continue to outreach to his fans, their families and their communities in non-traditional ways in non-clinical settings. Luther employed hundreds of people to support him with his music but when it came to managing his diabetes he made the mistake of  choosing to do it alone. We’re encouraging everyone to ‘Keep Their House A Home’ by building their own healthcare entourage.  Accepting your diagnosis and asking for help are both powerful ways on how to live your best life.

Yes, we believe in ‘The Power of Love.’

So can YOU!

Viola Davis Looks ‘Va Va Voom!’ at SAG Awards

January 30, 2012

Divabetic: Va Va Voom, Viola!

Viola Davis looked beautiful on the red carpet of the 2012 SAG Awards last night. Stylist Elizabeth Stewart, dressed Viola Davis in a white Marchesa gown and it definitely dazzled. She wore her hair in a wavy twenties style that we haven’t seen her in before.

Davis, an Oscar nominee for her role in the movie, described herself as “a little brown-skinned girl in an Afro who had a big dream.”

She was living the dream Sunday, working the carpet with her husband, Julius Tennon.

“It’s her show. I’m just here to support her and make her feel comfortable,” Tennon said.

“I’m shy,” Davis added.

Viola Davis took home the trophy for Best Actress at the event, setting herself up as the Academy Awards favorite for ‘Best Actress’ when that event airs on February 26, 2012.

Ricki Lake’s Rumba with Weight

Divabetic: Ricki Rumbas With her Weight

“Dancing With the Stars” was very good for Ricki Lake’s figure and health. But the experience has had a lasting effect on her mental health as well. “I sort of have Post-Traumatic Stress from it,” Lake said. “I haven’t been used to that kind of level of fame.”

She talked about the weight loss from ‘DWTS’ that led to magazine covers and interviews and a much higher public profile than she’s enjoyed in years. “You’ve lost all this weight and you want to maintain it, but you’re not dancing six hours a day anymore.”

But she is grateful for the experience, and she has managed to keep the weight off. “I think it’s great because I’m going to go back to TV next year,” Lake said.  She’s returning to her talk show roots with “The Ricki Lake Show,” coming in September 2012.

Jane Fonda Flashes Her $55,000 Teeth on Red Carpet

January 29, 2012

Divabetic: Jane Looks FONDA-tastic

Jane Fonda looks FONDA-TASTIC on the red carpet for the 2011 Cannes Film Festival “Sleeping Beauty” Premiere.

She was glowing wearing a custom Emilio Pucci gown with embellished panels. Her long sleeved white gown was teamed with dazzling Chopard jewels, a gold clutch and matching peep-toes.

Jane Fonda revealed on the red carpet that she manages to look fabulous in her 70s: ‘good genes and money’ are two factors. The third, she said, is sex.

The double-Oscar-winning actress on the arm of her boyfriend, Richard Perry, an acclaimed rock ’n’ roll producer, flashed her famous smile and said: ‘See these teeth? They cost $55,000. It was teeth or a new car — and I opted for the teeth. That’s what I mean by good genes and money. It costs a lot to look the way I do, although the genes cost nothing.”

‘It’s not just the genes, the money and what you eat, though. Sex is pretty important, too,’ she said smiling.

Divabetic’s Diabetes 12 Steps: Step #3

January 28, 2012

Divabetic: Diabetes 12 Steps

Is the general public’s lack of compassion for people living with diabetes to blame for why so many people neglect their diabetes?

Recent statistics reveal that approximately 6 million people in the United States are estimated to have undiagnosed diabetes, according to the CDC. It is also widely noted that diabetes can lead to a number of serious medical effects in untreated individuals.

So do people neglect their health because they feel the world around has given up on them too?

If so, what does neglecting your diabetes and purposefully hurting your body do for you? It must be doing something beneficial…otherwise you wouldn’t keep doing it.  Even though cigarettes are obviously harmful, people still smoke them because it feels good, it provides an obvious benefit.

Even if the benefit is small in comparison to the damage your body is suffering, purposefully neglecting your diabetes may be your method of coping with the overwhelming emotions around diabetes.

Are you ready to work towards finding a healthy way of getting that same benefit? From the outside, diabetes appears slightly complex but straightforward: take your insulin, check your blood sugar, count your carbohydrates, and carry on with your day.

But diabetes, like many other challenges in life, can have a way of twisting itself throughout every single part of our life and our emotions. It isn’t straightforward; it’s incredibly complex, and the immense challenge of taking care of diabetes every day can play a variety of games in our heads. Accepting your diabetes and acknowledging that you its a part of your life is how you begin move from diagnosis to DIVA!

STEP # 3:  I will respect not neglect my diabetes and I embrace the idea of self- management.

DIABETES 12 STEPS: We’d like to help you learn to accept your diabetes. Read all 12 Steps in our Reading Room at divabetic.org

Paula Deen’s Sons Are Unhappy With Her Decision

January 27, 2012

Paula Deen’s sons were so distraught over her decision to plug a diabetes drug, they nearly bolted from the family management to strike out on their own.

Paula’s sons, Jamie and Bobby Deen, were upset over her deal to endorse a diabetes medication because she was already taking a different diabetes medicine and responding well to it, sources told us. They said the sons “were worried about her health and didn’t want her to switch drugs. She had been taking a different drug for a while, and was doing very well.” They didn’t see any reason to change that. However, she appears to be doing equally well on the new treatment.”
