Judith Light Proves Who’s The Boss At Tony Awards

June 11, 2012

Mr Divabetic at Tony AwardsOur favorite moment at last night’s Tony Awards didn’t really happen. We wished  actress, Judith Light would have said, “after years of making some really bad TV sitcoms, look who’s FINALLY the boss!” when she won the Tony for Best Featured Actress in a play for her role as  an acerbic alcoholic in “Other Desert Cities.”  After all, she  beat out Linda Emond, Spencer Kayden, Celia Keenan-Bolger and Condola Rashad.

Of course, Judith Light already has two Emmy Awards for playing Karen Wolek on “One Life to Live” but it still would have made for great TV!

In Jon Robin Baitz’s play about a dysfunctional, politically divided family wrestling with a deep secret in their past, Light plays a lefty aunt determined to stir the pot.

The former “Who’s the Boss?” and “Ugly Betty” star was also nominated last year for her performance as Vince Lombardi long-suffering wife in “Lombardi.” The stage has become Light’s new home after leaving Broadway in the mid-1970s after appearances in “Herzl” and “A Doll’s House.”

The happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic stops by the 66th Annual Tony® Awards at the Beacon Theater in New York to talk about divas, dazzle and diabetes. Although he didn’t experience any wardrobe malfunctions in the fruit suit, he still caused quite a stir in attempt to glamorize good health!

Best Dressed at Tony Awards 2012

June 11, 2012

Divabetic Best DressedIt sure looks like the gap between Broadway and Hollywood fashion is as narrow as ever. The 2012 Tony Awards hosted a star-studded red carpet and so naturally, as happens at all awards shows, there were women who were better dressed than others. Sure, there were men, too – but they just slap on a tux and call it a night.

Our best dressed of the night are above – from left, Sheryl Crow, Stockard Channing, Cote de Pablo, Bernadette Peters and Adrienne Warren.

Worst Dressed at Tony Awards 2012

June 11, 2012

Divabetic Worst DressedThe worst dressed list at 2012 Tony Awards is almost as long as a chorus line! Kicking up their collective bad taste in fashion are Laura Bell Bundy, Jessica Chastain, Tracie Bennett, Linda Emond and Deborra-Lee Furness. Chastain looks like you can just see her breasts, while Bundy appears to have wandered in from a beauty pageant. To ‘wow’, you have to wear it well!

Note to Elizabeth Davis and Amanda Seyfried - we can’t decide if they are worst dressed or not. Their dresses are just kind of weird

Best Dressed at 2012 Tony Awards

June 11, 2012

Divabetic Best DressedLet’s hear it for the ladies who lunch – Bernadette Peters, Judith Light, Stockard Channing, Linda Lavin, Tracie Bennett – who by and large showed up their younger peers on the red carpet at the 2012 Tony Awards.

Our favorite Broadway diva, Bernadette Peters pulled off a modern mermaid gown in deep violet — strapless, no less — without the help of illusion netting, while Bennett looked positively girlish in a pretty pale pink gown with a raspberry sequined tulle overlay.

Stockard Channing wore a slinky sequined chiffon gown, and Judith Light, the winner for best actress in a featured role for “Other Desert Cities,” looked great in a ’30s-style chiffon and satin ivory gown.

‘Once’ Crowned Best Musical At Tony Awards

June 11, 2012

Once stole the theatrical spotlight, raking in eight Tony Awards on Sunday, including Best Musical Direction, Best Lead Actor in a Musical and the top award for Best Musical overall. Clybourne Park took home the highly coveted award for Best Play.

Steve Kazee also aided Once in its Tony domination, nabbing the award for Best Actor in a Musical and broke down thinking of his mother, who died on Easter Sunday, as he accepted the award on stage.

Audra McDonald took home the award for Best Lead Actress in a Musical for The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess and Nina Arianda surprised us all when she won Best Leading Actress in a play for Venus in Fur. “You were my first crush!” Arianda exclaimed to Christopher Plummer as she accepted her award.

The show was packed with musical performances throughout the night—EvitaNewsies, and Once were a few of our favorites who took stage by storm and brought Broadway to the boob tube. Neil Patrick Harris sparkled on stage as he cracked jokes and hosted the show for this third time.
