Filmmaker Nora Ephron Dead At 71

June 26, 2012

Nora EphronThe Washington Post is reporting that Nora Ephron has died after a battle with leukemia. She was 71.

Ephron was best known for her work on some of the most memorable romantic comedies in movie history, including “When Harry Met Sally…” and “Sleepless in Seattle” (she received Oscar nods for Best Screenplay on both).

Ephron began her career as a reporter for the New York Post, and later went on to pen essays for Esquire and New York magazines. She would get her first taste at screenwriting in the mid-1970s, when she ended up rewriting William Goldman’s script for “All the President’s Men” (Ephron’s husband at the time was Carl Bernstein, whose Nixon Watergate scoop was the film’s inspiration). The screenplay never ended up being used, but, as Ephron later told the Guardian, “It was a great way to learn, because Goldman was such a great screenwriter that just typing his stage directions taught me a huge amount.”

In 1983, Ephron wrote her first film, “Silkwood.” Starring Meryl Streep and directed by Mike Nichols, the movie told the true story of a woman who died in a suspicious car accident while looking into the wrongdoing at the plant she worked at (the script got Ephron her first Oscar nomination). Six years later, she wrote “When Harry Met Sally…” The rom-com, starring Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan, is still considered a classic to this day.

Ephron’s 1998 movie, “You’ve Got Mail” — which she wrote, produced and directed — turned out to be her most financially successful, grossing $250 million at the box office.

The last film Ephron worked on was 2009′s “Julie and Julia,” which she also wrote and directed.

According to her son Jacob Bernstein, Ephron’s cause of death was pneumonia brought on by acute myeloid leukemia. She is survived by her husband, screenwriter Nicholas Pileggi, and her sons, Jacob and Max.

How Much Sugar Is In a 2 Liter Bottle Of Coke?

June 26, 2012

Divabetic Soda BanYIKES! There are 240 grams of sugar (same carbohydrate count as 20 tbsp. of granulated sugar) in the form of sugar/glucose-fructose in a two liter bottle of Coca Cola. Can you imagine how much sugar would be in a 10 liter bottle of Coca Cola?

Soda consumption has been linked to an increased risk for heart disease and diabetes, as well as to rising rates of obesity. Recent research from the University of Bangor and Bristol suggests that drinking soda can actually trigger sweet cravings by dulling your sensitivity to sweet tastes, sparking a vicious cycle of eating sweet foods and drinks.

“As taste satisfaction levels drop; the more sweet foods are consumed,” Dr. Hans-Peter Kubis from Bangor University’s School of Sport, Health & Exercise Sciences said .

Spice Girls Musical Coming To Broadway?

June 26, 2012

The Spice Girls are back! The fab-u-lous 5 recently announced details of a musical based on their songs – a tale of fame and female friendship that will open  in the fall.

The music of the 1990s “girl power” group is being revived in “Viva Forever,” which tells the story of four friends whose bond is tested when their band enters a TV talent show.

The Spice Girls said they were delighted with the show, which is produced by Judy Craymer, the woman behind world conquering ABBA musical “Mamma Mia.”

“It’s better than we could ever have imagined,” said Melanie “Sporty Spice” Chisholm of the show, written by ultra-cool comedian Jennifer Saunders, who co-created TV sitcom “Absolutely Fabulous.” (We’re loving it, already!)

“They sing it better than us,” added Melanie Brown, the band’s “Scary Spice.

They were joined by Band members Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell (our favorite Spice Girl) and Victoria Beckham – also known as Baby, Ginger and Posh – for a media launch in the grand neo-Gothic hotel where the video for their 1996 No. 1 hit “Wannabe” was filmed.

The band’s outsized personalities and Halliwell’s Union Jack dress made them icons of 1990s “Cool Britannia,” and they sold 75 million records around the world.

Beckham said the show would “be introducing a whole new generation to Girl Power: as reported by Jill Lawless.

Can Eating Dessert For Breakfast Help You Lose Weight?

June 26, 2012

Divabetic DietsIt sounds too good to be true, but a group of scientists reckon they’ve figured out how to prevent weight-gain and food cravings – and it involves adding a cookie or a slice of cake to your breakfast.

Researchers from Tel Aviv University’s Wolfson Medical Center in Israel believe that dieters would have less trouble fighting off pesky hunger pangs throughout the day if they ate a carbohydrate-rich, protein-packed breakfast – with a helping of dessert.

During the study, researchers enlisted the help of 200 (non-diabetic) obese adults who were split into two groups.

One group was asked to follow a low-carbohydrate diet including a 304-calorie breakfast containing a total of 10g of carbs.

The second group were given a 600-calorie breakfast with 60g carbs and a small ‘sweet’, such as chocolates, cookies, a slice of cake or a doughnut.

Both breakfasts from the two groups included protein-rich foods like egg whites, tuna, cheese and low-fat milk. However, second group (who followed the ‘dessert breakfast’) consumed an extra 15g of protein than the first group.

Although both groups had lost 33 pounds at the study’s halfway point (around 15.1kg per person) – those following the low-carb diet, regained 22 pounds during the final four months of the study compared to the ‘dessert for breakfast’ group who regained an average of 15 pounds.

Furthermore, participants who ate dessert for breakfast also noted a reduction in hunger pangs (caused by a dip in ghrelin levels – or the ‘hunger hormone’) and sugary food cravings. The low-carb dieters, however, did not report a change in either of these factors.

Those who ate dessert for breakfast also found it easier to stick to calorie requirements throughout the day.

“The goal of a weight loss diet should be not only weight reduction but also reduction of hunger and cravings, thus helping prevent weight regain,” said study author, Daniela Jakubowicz in a statement.

Jessica Simpson’s Meltdown Over Shedding The Pounds

June 26, 2012

Jessica SimpsonJessica Simpson made headlines for doing exactly what she was supposed to do while pregnant – gain weight.

Now that she’s given birth, new reports say the singer is seriously stressing out over hermultimillion dollar contract with Weight Watchers and the pressure to meet her 50 pound weight-loss goal.

In Touch magazine reports the 31-year-old singer hasn’t wasted any time when it comes to shedding the baby weight — and has already made five trips to the gym in two weeks.

“She is as focused and determined as ever,” the singer’s trainer, Harley Pasternak, told the magazine.

Jessica’s weight has always been heavily scrutinized by the media — from when shewhittled her body down to play Daisy Duke in the 2005 movie “The Dukes of Hazzard,” to the “mom jeans” incident in 2009, in which an unflattering pair of high-waisted jeans sparked international discussion and ridicule of the singer for gaining a few pounds.

Even her estimated 40-to-50-pound weight gain during her pregnancy drew criticism, but the singer chose not to let comments about her body bother her. In April, a month before she gave birth, she took to Twitter, letting fans know they should pick up her nude Elle magazine cover before it was too late:

“Last chance to see me “fat” aka PREGNANT on the cover of Elle :) I loved this shoot, only on stands for a few more days!!!”

With the constant attention on Simpson’s body, it’s no surprise she’s reportedly stressed about trying to lose a rumored 50 pounds in just five months.

“She’s so emotional. She doesn’t want to leave her baby. Sometimes she just starts crying. It’s hard for her,” a friend of Simpson’s told In Touch of the multiple trips to the gym in recent weeks.

Simpson can at least take comfort in knowing she’s not alone on the journey back to the body she once had. Fellow new mommy Hilary Duff is also taking a healthy approach to weight loss, telling Us Weekly, “I’m working hard and I’m doing everything I can to lose the weight the right way.”
