US Women’s Gymnastics Wins Team Gold Medal

July 31, 2012

Divabetic SummerThe U.S. women’s gymnastics team dominated the team finals at the 2012 London Olympics and took home gold!

The U.S. women captured the gold medalwith an overall score of 183.596. Russia scored a 178.530 to take the silver and Romania won the bronze with a score of 176.414.

The 2012 U.S. women’s gymnastics team is composed of Jordyn Wieber, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, Kyla Ross and McKayla Maroney. According to the Olympic format, each team selects three gymnasts for each of the four apparatuses in the final — balance beam, uneven bars, vault and floor.

The 16-year-old Douglas performed in each of the rotations while Wieber was called on for the floor, vault and uneven bars. Raisman worked the floor and the beam, with Ross performing on the beam and the uneven bars. Maroney was the only U.S. gymnast with just one event but no one on the team registered a score higher than her 16.233 on vault. That score was the highest of all competitors in the team final.

Russia was the primary challenger for the U.S. team in middle stages of the competition but completely fell apart during the floor routine, with two gymnasts falling during their routines. After Russia’s mistakes, the U.S. team headed to the floor knowing three solid performances would likely win them the gold. Gabby Douglas, Jordyn Wieber and Aly Raisman delivered impressive floor routines to clinch the first team gold for the U.S. since the “Magnificent Seven” won in 1996.

After Douglas opened up the U.S. turn on the floor with a 15.066 score, Wieber proved that she was not going to let her disappointment in missing the individual all-around distract her in the team competition. Delivering a confident, powerful performance, Wieber seemed to be struggling just to contain her excitement near the end of her routine, knowing how close she was to a gold medal. Rounding out the U.S. trio on the mat, Raisman scored a team-high 15.300. With tears in her eyes, she left the mat knowing that the U.S. would be atop the medal stand.

Perhaps to the delight of Jalen Rose Chris Webber, Maroney told Will Graves of The Associated Press after the competition that the quintet would like to be called the “Fierce Five” rather than the “Fab Five” as some had taken to calling them.

Jessica Simpson’s Secret Weight Loss Weapon is …?

July 31, 2012

Divabetic SummerJessica Simpson’s battle of the post-pregnancy bulge continues.

Dressed in head-to-toe black, the new mom headed to a sweat session with trainer to the stars Harley Pasternak— who has sculpted the famous figures of celebrity mothers Halle BerryAlicia Keys, and Hilary Duff — at a private West Hollywood gym on July 2, 2012.

The Fashion Star mentor, 31 — who reportedly tipped the scale at 210 lbs. at the height of her pregnancy — has been power-walking and hitting the gym since giving birth to daughter Maxwell Drew on May 1.

Despite initial reports that Simpson is “stressed and overwhelmed” by the deal, the star insists she feels no pressure to slim down quickly. “Just so everyone knows . . . Weight Watchers hasn’t put ANY pressure on me!” tweeted Simpson, engaged to Maxwell’s dad, former NFL star Eric Johnson since fall 2010. “I’m trying to be as healthy as I can be for myself and I feel great.”

The singer and fashion mogul was first spotted hitting the Pasternak in early June. After Maxwell’s birth (the baby girl weighed 9 lbs 13 oz), Simpson took time to heal from her C-section — and then it was back to the gym.

Learn How to BEET Heart Disease Today

July 31, 2012

Divabetic SummerWant to give yourself better odds of remaining sharp in later years? Add some beets to your anti-Alzheimer’s arsenal.New research suggests beets could help increase blood flow to the brain .

Researchers from Wake Forest University had 14 seniors (70 years old and up) drink either 16 oz. of beet juice or eat a control diet in the morning for two days, then used MRI machines to measure blood flow to the brain. The groups switched diets for another two days, then were tested again. The result: The beet-juice drinkers enjoyed 21% increased blood flow to the frontal lobes — sensitive areas of the brain vulnerable to the degeneration that leads to dementia. “I think these results are consistent and encouraging — that good diet consisting of a lot of fruit and vegetables can contribute to overall health,” said Gary Miller, Ph.D., a senior investigator on the project.

Just how do beets benefit the brain? They are a top source of nitrates, which when converted to nitric oxide actually expand veins and arteries, allowing more blood to flow and carry oxygen to the brain…and to muscles, as well. This may be why beet juice helped boost stamina, allowing athletes to cycle a minute and a half longer at high intensity in one study. Beets also contain betanin, a compound that may help keep LDL (“bad”) cholesterol in check. One-half cup of cooked beets has only 37 calories and provides a good source of folic acid, manganese and potassium.

Bonus: Eat smart to stay smart. Harvard Medical School researchers found that middle-aged women who ate the mostleafy greens and/or cruciferous veggies were more likely to maintain mental acuity in later years.

Beer Challenges Gatorade as the Best Sports Drink

July 30, 2012

Divabetic SummerDon’t be surprised if you spot a top athlete competing in the London Olympics reaching for beer before their competition!

Beer’s the newest beverage challenging the iconic Gatorade’s reign as the world’s most popular sports drink.

In 1965, researchers at the University of Florida (Go Gators) developed the first sports drink designed to replenish the fluid, carbohydrates and electrolytes that are dilost from the body during physical exertion called  ”Gatorade.”

Gatorade – has reigned supreme as the #1 flavored sports drink.

Athletes (and weekend warriors) around world drink millions of bottles of neon colored Gatorade each year in an attempt to “recover” from their “intense” workouts.

Its combination of water, sugar, sodium and potassium has been designed to have a similar osmolarity as human blood…which is important because transferring fluids and nutrients to the blood is easiest when the composition of both is similar.

As a result of this freaky blood-like osmolarity, athletes absorb Gatorade  as quickly and efficiently as possible allowing them to train harder in their quest to win Olympic gold.

Erdinger, a Bavarian brewmeister, is touting its no-alcohol beer as the latest sport drink for athletes, handing it out at the finish line of sporting events and touting its regenerative benefits.

Unlike Gatorade, Erdinger Alkoholfrei is served up with a frothy head. And it comes in one color – a golden hue – unlike conventional sport drinks.

Several top athletes from Europe drank the beverage from giant mugs on the podium of the World Cup biathlons in  Maine.

The company touts the beverage as an isotonic (like Gatorade), vitamin-rich, no-additive beverage with natural regenerative powers that help athletes recover from a workout.

In other words, it’s carbohydrate-loaded refreshment without the alcoholic buzz of beer or the jitters caused by some energy drinks. Reprinted from Healthy Habits and Associated Press.

Weight Loss Reduces Women’s Diabetes Risk

July 28, 2012

Divabetic SummerWeight control through diet and exercise can prevent most cases of type 2 diabetes in American women over age 50, a new study finds.

Researchers from the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, Mass., analyzed data from more than 150,000 postmenopausal women who were followed for more than 10 years. Latinas and Asians were about twice as likely as whites to develop diabetes; African Americans were two to three times as likely.

Those differences were largely due to modifiable lifestyle factors such as diet, physical activity and smoking, the researchers said.

The study also found that a large reduction in diabetes risk among women would occur in all four racial and ethnic groups if they maintained a healthy body weight, ate a healthy diet and were physically active.

Maintaining a body-mass index (BMI) of less than 25 appeared to be particularly important in reducing diabetes risk. BMI is a measure of body fat based on height and weight.

“Our work shows that among numerous races [and] ethnicities, the women with both high body-mass index and low levels of physical activity are far more likely to develop diabetes,” primary investigator Dr. Yunsheng Ma said in a medical school news release. “A healthier diet and adequate levels of physical activity significantly lower that risk for most women.”

The study was published July 23 in the journal Diabetes Care.

Type 2 diabetes, the more common type, means the body doesn’t produce or properly use the hormone insulin, which is needed to convert food into energy. Untreated, type 2 diabetes can cause damage to the heart, eyes, kidneys and other organs. (Reprinted from Yahoo News.)

Michael Phelps’ 12,000 Calories Per Day Diet!

July 28, 2012

Divabetic SummerIf you’re wondering what superstar Michael Phelps eats to stay in ultimate Olympic shape? Phelps abides by a mind-blowing diet of 12,000 calories per day.

“Eat, sleep and swim. That’s all I can do. Get some calories into my system, and try to recover the best I can,” Phelps has said of his diet.

In peak training phases, Phelps swims minimum 80,000 meters a week, which is nearly 50 miles. He practices twice a day, sometimes more if he’s training at altitude. Phelps trains for around five to six hours a day at six days a week.

Phelps eatss around 4,000 calories per meal. For breakfast, Phelps eats three fried-egg sandwiches with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions, and mayonnaise. Then he drinks two cups of coffee and then consumes a five-egg omelet, a bowl of grits, three slices of French toast with powdered sugar and three chocolate-chip pancakes. For lunch, Phelps eats a pound of pasta and two large ham and cheese sandwiches on white bread with mayo. He then drinks about 1,000 calories worth of energy drinks. For dinner, Phelps eats another pound of pasta and a full pizza followed by another 1,000 calories of energy drinks. You may think that this is overload and complete overeating. Remember, Phelps trains five to six hours a day nearly every single day and is giving it his full effort most of the time. His body is burning thousands upon thousands of calories a day. Phelps probably has a very fast natural metabolism as well so this adds to even more reason why he needs to eat that much.

The more calories you have, the more energy there is. This is all about energy for Phelps and these types of foods give him plenty of it. Try training that much and not eating thousands of calories a day. You wouldn’t be able to traineffectively!
