Light Leather Is Summer’s Hottest Trend

July 9, 2012

Divabetic Wack or WowMost of us don’t usually associate black leather with soaring heat but for many celebrities it’s this summer’s hottest trend.

Leather is no longer limited to heavy jackets on burly men you see in the film, Wild Hogs.

Slim leather pants are an easy alternative to jeans in the winter, and the material is now just as suitable for the warmer days of summer.

The key to wearing leather in summer is choosing a shape that falls a bit away from the body, giving your skin room to breathe. It’s also important to go for a lighter weight than what you’d go for in winter, and opting for neutral colors like beige, white, or even light pastels.

What will you be wearing for that upcoming warm weather getaway, beach vacation, or just in general this summer? Let Divabetic help you decide. The happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic talks to Divabetic Image & Style Expert, Catherine Schuller about ‘Wack or Wow’ Summer Fashions at the 10th annual Big Apple Barbecue Block Party in New York City

Is Your Bike Ruining Your Sex Life?

July 9, 2012

DivabeticCan you blame your boring sex live on  your bike?

A recent study in the Journal of Sexual Medicine revealed that different handlebar postures on bicycles can affect genital sensation for women.

The study, authored by Yale University School of Medicine Marsha K. Guess, an assistant professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences, showed that an increased pressure on the genital region thanks to seating postures could result in permanent damage to the nerves in the genital region.

“There are a myriad of factors affecting women’s sexual function. If women can minimize pressure application to the genital tissues merely by repositioning their handlebars higher, to increase sitting upright, and thereby maximize pressure application to the woman’s sit bones, then they are one step closer to maintaining their very important sexual health,” explained Irwin Goldstein, editor-in-chief of The Journal of Sexual Medicine.

The study takes its cue from similar research done in 2006 at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Brugmen in Brussels. As reported by WomensCycling.ca, the paper’s author Professor Luc Baeyons pointed to three regions impacted by bike saddles: The two sit bones, which can withstand pressure, and the soft tissue between the legs, which can be deadened by continued impact.

Baeyons’ suggestions for improvement included finding a saddle that didn’t push on the delicate tissue, getting a bike fitted to your body size, wearing padded shorts and getting up from your saddle while riding at least every 10 minutes. His final piece of advice corresponds with Guess’ research: Adjusting the bike handlebars so your posture becomes more vertical.

Concerns about the effect on cycling on men’s health have been studied previously, with sperm counts lowered and instances of erectile dysfunction raised for those who cycle more. For males, saddles seem to the key to protecting their nether regions.

Million Big Gulp March Takes To Streets Against NY Soda Ban

July 9, 2012

Divabetic Soda BanAn organization has planned a rally to oppose New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s proposed Super-Sized Soda Ban.

NYC Liberty HQ spokesman Zach Huff says the “Million Big Gulp March” will be held in City Hall Park at 4:30 p.m. today.

It will be attended by business owners, local politicians and others against the proposed ban.

Mayor Bloomberg wants to bar restaurants, movie theaters, sports arenas, food carts and delis from selling sodas and other sugary drinks in servings larger than 16 ounces. He says it’s a way to fight obesity in a city that spends billions of dollars a year on weight-related health problems.

Opponents say the city is overstepping its authority and infringing on personal freedom.

The happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic is on location in Central Park, New York City to find out people’s reactions to Mayor Bloomberg’s proposed Super Size Soda ban.

Can Going For A Walk Lower Your Risk For Diabetes?

July 9, 2012

Divabetic BBQIf you’re at risk for developing diabetes  and want to lower that risk, it may be as simple as going for a short walk every day.

The University of Washington and University of Pittsburgh researchers studied 1,800 people who wore pedometers for a week and had an average body mass index of 32, which signifies obesity. People who walked between 5,400 and 7,799 steps each day had a 26 percent lower risk of diabetes compared with people who walked less than 3,500 steps. And people who walked 7,800 or more steps each day had a 23 percent lower risk of diabetes.

This isn’t the first time walking has been shown to ward off diabetes. The American Diabetes Association suggests people should walk 5 miles, or 10,000 steps, per day. If that sounds overwhelming, start with a comfortable pace – even as little as 10 minutes a day – and gradually add more time every week until you get to about 30 to 45 minutes every day.
