Britain’s Healthy Food Labels Are Rejected

July 11, 2012

Divabetic SummerBritain came close to adopting a traffic-light system of compulsory food labelling to grade the health impact of food products before opposition from within the food industry prevented it happening.

The traffic-light system – a postage-stamp sized sticker that used a colour code to denote the percentage of a person’s recommended daily allowance contained in each product – red for high, amber for medium and green for low.

In the crucial 15 seconds a consumer takes to decide on a supermarket purchase, the labelling is often the deciding factor.

It means being able to know – at a glance – what goes in to what we eat. But for the food industry, it means being told what they must put on their packaging.

“In the absence of a single, clear, simple labelling system, consumers really are at the mercy of the marketing department,” an expert said.

“We know [people] can be convinced by being told that a product is one of their five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, but they’re also having their entire daily allowance of sugar, or of salt, or sometimes of saturated fat.”

Traffic-light labelling also tended to make foods healthier, the expert added, as companies tried to avoid having too many red traffic lights.

“Part of the process is saying, ‘What kind of traffic light do I want to put on the front of this product, and how hard am I going to have to work to make sure I turn a red to amber, or turn an amber to green?’”

But the majority of food companies in Britain still prefer the GDA system. And in the absence of regulation, there is little motivation to change.

Katy Perry’s Grandmother Sells Out Movie Theater

July 11, 2012

Diva TalkRadio Inspired by Katy PerryKaty Perry‘s grandmother “took over” a Las Vegas theatre to watch the singer’s new movie with 65 friends.

The star is currently promoting Katy Perry: Part of Me, which follows her epic California Dreams tour, but also captures the breakdown of her marriage to Russell Brand.

Katy is very proud of the documentary and has revealed her family are equally as excited about it.

She took to her Twitter account to reveal 91-year-old Ann Hudson had rounded up a huge group of pals to go and see the movie this week.

“Was just informed that Grandma took over a whole theater in Vegas with 65 of her friends in lolita #KP3D glasses. Picture coming soon #gogranny (sic),” she wrote.

Katy shares a close bond with Ann, who also appears in Part of Me.

The 27-year-old singer recently revealed her grandmother “steals the show” in the documentary.

Ann accompanied Katy to the movie’s Hollywood premiere, and Katy credits the older lady for keeping her grounded despite her success.

7-11 Celebrates 85th Birthday With Free Slurpees Today

July 11, 2012

Divabetic Soda BanNew York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg might not like it but 7-Eleven is ringing in its 85th birthday by offering free Slurpees at more than 9,000 locations today.

Before fans of Michael Bloomberg’s proposed soda ban start making pickets, it’s worth noting that today’s freebies are a slim 7.11 ounces––about eight times smaller than the chain’s popular line of Big Gulp drinks, which max out at a gallon.

The company’s also pushing its new line of sugar-free “Lite” Slurpees, which it released right before Memorial Day.

For a business that’s expanded to more than 46,000 stores worldwide, 7-Eleven’s roots are pretty modest. It started in the summer of 1927 with one Southland Ice Company employee peddling bread, milk and eggs on an ice dock in a Dallas.

Company CEO Joe DePinto said in a statement they expect to dole out 7 million free Slurpees this year, beating last year’s tally by 2 million.

The promotion appropriately runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic is on location in Central Park, New York City to find out people’s reactions to Mayor Bloomberg’s proposed Super Size Soda ban.

Some fruits do contain more sugar than others, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t eat them if you have diabetes. The key is to keep an eye on portion sizes and stay away from fruits canned in syrups or other types of added sugar.
