Meet the Stylist Behind Katy Perry’s Look

July 13, 2012

Divabetic SummerKaty Perry‘s boisterous outfits and multi-hued hair partly stem from the imagination of her stylist  Johnny Wujek.

Katy Perry relies on Wujek to make sure the starlet looks more like a teenage dream than one of the boys. And, while Perry has managed to rock the world on stage and on screen (thanks to her 3D tour documentary Katy Perry: Part of Me), it’s her fashion expert and right-hand style man, Johnny Wujek, which deserves the accolades for her over-the-top ensembles. So where does he get the inspiration for Katy’s ever-changing wardrobe?

“My mind is constantly going and trying to think of different things. I feel like Katy and I are on the same page when it comes to thinking out-side of the box and trying to be as creative and fun as possible. Going off of a theme – whether it be candy or whatever it is – it always helps to have a direction and take it outside of the norm. For example, with the Much Music Awards, for Wide Awake it was a ballad and it had an evolution; a meaning behind it. Everything depends on the song and what the meaning is behind it – or sometimes a fun trend or vibe that we go off of,”  said Wujek.

Wujek, who is set to appear on the next season of America’s Next Top Model, has his hands in everything Perry: from creating many of her show-stopping red carpet looks to designing all of the costumes for her California Dreams tour.

Katy loves Versace, YSL and Chanel. She loves Chanel. She rarely wears jeans. She mainly wears dresses and lately it’s been a lot of black and dark. She’s kind of moved onto the ’90s a little bit with the black lace and dark purple hair. It’s just a fun little phase, ” said Wujek.

Cranberries Do Something That No Other Fruit Can!

July 13, 2012

Divabetic SummerIf you want to lower your risk of painful urinary tract infections, believe with your mother told you and eat some cranberries!

Researchers from National Taiwan University Hospital and the National Taiwan University College of Medicine proved there is a  link between cranberry intake and decreased UTI risk. The studies compared the UTI risk from taking cranberry products, placebos, or nothing.

Specifically, researchers found that women who get recurrent UTIs seem to be benefit especially from cranberry products.

And BBC News reported that actually drinking cranberry juice, versus taking a cranberry-containing pill, seemed to be more effective at preventing UTIs.

The infections occur when the urinary system becomes infected, most commonly the bladder or the urethra, according to the Mayo Clinic.

“What this is doing is solidifying what has been folklore for quite some time,” Dr. Deborah Wing, a UTI expert at the University of California, Irvine, told Reuters. “Finally, the science is catching up to what our mothers have been telling us for so many decades.”

U.S. Olympic Uniforms Cause Outrage

July 13, 2012

Divabetic SummerUniforms for U.S. Olympic athletes are American red, white and blue — but made in China. That has members of Congress fuming.

Republicans and Democrats railed Thursday about the U.S. Olympic Committee’s decision to dress the U.S. team in Chinese manufactured berets, blazers and pants while the American textile industry struggles economically with many U.S. workers desperate for jobs.

“I am so upset. I think the Olympic committee should be ashamed of themselves. I think they should be embarrassed. I think they should take all the uniforms, put them in a big pile and burn them and start all over again,” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., told reporters at a Capitol Hill news conference on taxes.

“If they have to wear nothing but a singlet that says USA on it, painted by hand, then that’s what they should wear,” he said, referring to an athletic jersey.

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi told reporters at her weekly news conference that she’s proud of the nation’s Olympic athletes, but “they should be wearing uniforms that are made in America.”

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said simply of the USOC, “You’d think they’d know better.”

In a statement, the U.S. Olympic Committee defended the choice of designer Ralph Lauren for the clothing at the London Games, which begin later this month.

“Unlike most Olympic teams around the world, the U.S. Olympic Team is privately funded and we’re grateful for the support of our sponsors,” USOC spokesman Patrick Sandusky said in a statement. “We’re proud of our partnership with Ralph Lauren, an iconic American company, and excited to watch America’s finest athletes compete at the upcoming Games in London.”

Ralph Lauren also is dressing the Olympic and Paralympic teams for the closing ceremony and providing casual clothes to be worn around the Olympic Village. Nike has made many of the competition uniforms for the U.S. and outfits for the medal stand.
