Mariah Carey Joins American Idol

July 23, 2012

Divabetic SummerMariah Carey will be joining “American Idol” as a judge  for Season 12, filling the female diva slot and removing any doubt that Jennifer Lopez is really leaving.

Carey, speaking to the group briefly by speakerphone, welcomed the new assignment. “I am so excited to be joining Idol,” she said. “I can’t wait to get started.”

Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly confirmed the hire on the phone with Carey in front of television critics.

He was less forthcoming about her salary, which is reported by multiple sources to be $12 million for her first season.

That’s the same rate at which Lopez was hired. Lopez reportedly made $15 million her second season, during which the show’s ratings tumbled, and unconfirmed sources said she was rebuffed when she asked for a raise to return for season three.

Bad Economy Could Lead To Better Health!

July 23, 2012

Divabetic SummerAn economic downturn may be better for your health than you realize.

The 2008 financial crisis in Iceland improved the health of the country’s population, according to a new study from researchers at the University of Iceland, the Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center and Rider University. In the aftermath of the crisis, Icelandians cut back on behaviors that put their health at risk and even boosted some behaviors that promote good health.

Between 2007 and 2009, Iceland’s residents reduced their smoking, heavy drinking, indoor tanning and consumption of unhealthy foods like sugary drinks, sweets and fast food, the study found. Though Icelandians cut back on healthy behaviors like eating fruits and vegetables in the aftermath of the recession, they consumed more fish oil and were more likely to get the recommended amounts of sleep.

Though the findings of the Iceland study may seem counterintuitive, recessions have been shown to improve health elsewhere in the world. Economic downturns during the 20th century have been associated with a drop in mortality rates, according to Slate.

“There is a pretty broad literature on this,” MIT health economist Jonathan Gruberwrote in an e-mail to Slate’s Timothy Noah. “[A]nd the consensus seems to be that recessions are good for health.”

Roasted Cabbage with Bacon

Ingredients: 1 head of cabbage, 6 slices of bacon, salt , balsamic vinegar and 1 tablespoon of pine nuts

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 450 degrees.

Peel off 2-3 of the outer layers of cabbage.  Cut in half and then cut in half again and then repeat.  You should and up with 8 small wedges.  Lay some foil on a baking pan and top with the wedges.  Sprinkle each cabbage with salt. Slice each bacon in half and then lay on the top of the cabbage.

Place in the oven for 25 minutes and then remove.  Sprinkle the pine nuts onto the foil so that they toast. Place back in oven for 3-5 minutes or until everything is brown.  Remove and drizzle each wedge with balsamic vinegar.  Plate the wedges with a few pine nuts or chop everything up and place in large bowl. Enjoy!

Possible Link Between Diabetes & Beauty Products

July 23, 2012

Divabetic SummerChemicals in beauty and personal care products may boost women’s risk of diabetes, a new study  in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, suggests.

Researchers found that elevated concentrations of chemicals called phthalates in women’s bodies are associated with an increased chance of developing diabetes. Phthalates are hormone-disrupting chemicals commonly used in products such as soaps, nail polishes, hair sprays, perfumes and moisturizers.

Researchers analyzed concentrations of phthalates in the urine of 2,350 women from across the United States. They found that women with the highest levels of mono-benzyl phthalate and mono-isobutyl phthalate were nearly twice as likely to develop diabetes as those with the lowest levels of the two chemicals.

Women with higher-than-average levels of mono-(3-carboxypropyl) phthalate had about a 60 percent increased risk of diabetes, and those with moderately high levels of the chemicals mono-n-butyl phthalate and di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate had about a 70 percent increased risk of diabetes.

Tamarra James-Todd, the lead esearcher from the division of women’s health at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, in Boston, said,  ”This is an important first step in exploring the connection between phthalates and diabetes. We know that in addition to being present in personal care products, phthalates also exist in certain types of medical devices and medication that is used to treat diabetes and this could also explain the higher level of phthalates in diabetic women. So overall, more research is needed.”

The researchers also cautioned that the women in the study “self-reported” their diabetes, a less than ideal method of conducting research. And while the study found a potential connection between phthalates and diabetes in women, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.
