US Women’s Gymnastics Wins Team Gold Medal

July 31, 2012

Divabetic SummerThe U.S. women’s gymnastics team dominated the team finals at the 2012 London Olympics and took home gold!

The U.S. women captured the gold medalwith an overall score of 183.596. Russia scored a 178.530 to take the silver and Romania won the bronze with a score of 176.414.

The 2012 U.S. women’s gymnastics team is composed of Jordyn Wieber, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, Kyla Ross and McKayla Maroney. According to the Olympic format, each team selects three gymnasts for each of the four apparatuses in the final — balance beam, uneven bars, vault and floor.

The 16-year-old Douglas performed in each of the rotations while Wieber was called on for the floor, vault and uneven bars. Raisman worked the floor and the beam, with Ross performing on the beam and the uneven bars. Maroney was the only U.S. gymnast with just one event but no one on the team registered a score higher than her 16.233 on vault. That score was the highest of all competitors in the team final.

Russia was the primary challenger for the U.S. team in middle stages of the competition but completely fell apart during the floor routine, with two gymnasts falling during their routines. After Russia’s mistakes, the U.S. team headed to the floor knowing three solid performances would likely win them the gold. Gabby Douglas, Jordyn Wieber and Aly Raisman delivered impressive floor routines to clinch the first team gold for the U.S. since the “Magnificent Seven” won in 1996.

After Douglas opened up the U.S. turn on the floor with a 15.066 score, Wieber proved that she was not going to let her disappointment in missing the individual all-around distract her in the team competition. Delivering a confident, powerful performance, Wieber seemed to be struggling just to contain her excitement near the end of her routine, knowing how close she was to a gold medal. Rounding out the U.S. trio on the mat, Raisman scored a team-high 15.300. With tears in her eyes, she left the mat knowing that the U.S. would be atop the medal stand.

Perhaps to the delight of Jalen Rose Chris Webber, Maroney told Will Graves of The Associated Press after the competition that the quintet would like to be called the “Fierce Five” rather than the “Fab Five” as some had taken to calling them.

Jessica Simpson’s Secret Weight Loss Weapon is …?

July 31, 2012

Divabetic SummerJessica Simpson’s battle of the post-pregnancy bulge continues.

Dressed in head-to-toe black, the new mom headed to a sweat session with trainer to the stars Harley Pasternak— who has sculpted the famous figures of celebrity mothers Halle BerryAlicia Keys, and Hilary Duff — at a private West Hollywood gym on July 2, 2012.

The Fashion Star mentor, 31 — who reportedly tipped the scale at 210 lbs. at the height of her pregnancy — has been power-walking and hitting the gym since giving birth to daughter Maxwell Drew on May 1.

Despite initial reports that Simpson is “stressed and overwhelmed” by the deal, the star insists she feels no pressure to slim down quickly. “Just so everyone knows . . . Weight Watchers hasn’t put ANY pressure on me!” tweeted Simpson, engaged to Maxwell’s dad, former NFL star Eric Johnson since fall 2010. “I’m trying to be as healthy as I can be for myself and I feel great.”

The singer and fashion mogul was first spotted hitting the Pasternak in early June. After Maxwell’s birth (the baby girl weighed 9 lbs 13 oz), Simpson took time to heal from her C-section — and then it was back to the gym.

Learn How to BEET Heart Disease Today

July 31, 2012

Divabetic SummerWant to give yourself better odds of remaining sharp in later years? Add some beets to your anti-Alzheimer’s arsenal.New research suggests beets could help increase blood flow to the brain .

Researchers from Wake Forest University had 14 seniors (70 years old and up) drink either 16 oz. of beet juice or eat a control diet in the morning for two days, then used MRI machines to measure blood flow to the brain. The groups switched diets for another two days, then were tested again. The result: The beet-juice drinkers enjoyed 21% increased blood flow to the frontal lobes — sensitive areas of the brain vulnerable to the degeneration that leads to dementia. “I think these results are consistent and encouraging — that good diet consisting of a lot of fruit and vegetables can contribute to overall health,” said Gary Miller, Ph.D., a senior investigator on the project.

Just how do beets benefit the brain? They are a top source of nitrates, which when converted to nitric oxide actually expand veins and arteries, allowing more blood to flow and carry oxygen to the brain…and to muscles, as well. This may be why beet juice helped boost stamina, allowing athletes to cycle a minute and a half longer at high intensity in one study. Beets also contain betanin, a compound that may help keep LDL (“bad”) cholesterol in check. One-half cup of cooked beets has only 37 calories and provides a good source of folic acid, manganese and potassium.

Bonus: Eat smart to stay smart. Harvard Medical School researchers found that middle-aged women who ate the mostleafy greens and/or cruciferous veggies were more likely to maintain mental acuity in later years.
