Oprah’s Morning TV Face-Off with Gayle King

August 31, 2012

Divabetic SummerSo much for friendship! ABC Network announced a bevy of big names –including Oprah Winfrey - will be filling in for Robin Roberts while the “Good Morning America” host takes an extended medical leave.

Did Oprah forget that her best friend, Gaye King, hosts the CBS Morning show?  I guess  nothing stands in your way when you’re trying to boost the ratings for your network.

Robin Roberts, who is battling the rare bone marrow disorder MDS, began her leave on Thursday. The show devoted its second hour to her, and during that time, announced some of the people who would take over from Roberts during her absence. It’s not clear how long she will be gone, though her treatment will take at least some months.

ABC News is drawing from its extensive stable for some of its guest hosts. Diane Sawyer, Amy Robach, Elisabeth Vargas, Katie Couric and Barbara Walters will all do stints.

Ultimate Fashion Statement: Neon Sneakers!

August 30, 2012

Divabetic SummerFluorescent colored workout gear– particularly sneakers– were a big trend at the London 2012 Olympics and now they’re making a statement in New York City.

From neon green, pink and yellow, the world’s best athletes and weekend warriors  are stepping up their game in sneakers with an added pick me up. Earlier today, I must have seen at least 20 joggers and runners wearing fluorescent colored sneakers in Central Park.

“They’re standing out because the colors on their feet are so bright. From a viewership point it makes you want to put on a pair and get out there,” said Jaclyn Emerick, Fitness Editor at SELF magazine.

Fashion editors believe the neon fashion trend is going to last.

“We’re not just seeing it in track and field… it can psyche you up,” added Emerick.

Some of the bright shoes are the Nike FlyKnit Trainers, part of Nike’s US medal stand footwear and apparel collection.  The lightweight shoes are made of eco-friendly material and designed to fit and feel like socks.

Psoriasis Linked to Diabetes

August 30, 2012

Divabetic SummerPsoriasis patients may be at an increased risk for type 2 diabetes, and the risk appears to be greatest among patients with severe psoriasis, researchers reported here.

Compared with the general population, patients with mild psoriasis had a 49% increased risk of developing diabetes, and individuals with severe psoriasis had a 2.13-fold increased relative risk when compared with the general population (P<0.0001), Ole Ahlehoff, MD, PhD, a post-doctoral fellow in cardiology at Copenhagen University Hospital Gentofte, reported at the European Society of Cardiology meeting.

“Psoriasis is a common inflammatory disease affecting approximately 125 million people worldwide,” Ahlehoff said in a press briefing. He noted that previous studies have shown that patients with psoriasis are at a twofold risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and death. One of those people afflicted by psoriasis is the happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic.

“I’ve been battling psoriasis for years, say Mr. Divabetic. “I know I am at greater risk of developing diabetes because of  my  family history of type 2 diabetes as well as a sibling living with type 1 diabetes but I didn’t know my skin condition was also a factor.”

“Diabetes and psoriasis share an underlying inflammatory process and an abundance of risk factors and therefore it is not surprising that psoriasis has been proposed as a risk factor for new onset diabetes,” he explained. “We therefore set out to test this hypothesis in a nationwide study of the entire Danish population since diagnosis of a risk factor for diabetes may allow for early detection and treatment.

He suggested that screening psoriasis patients once a year for diabetes would be reasonable, along with other classical cardiovascular risk factors such as cholesterol levels and high blood pressure

He said his findings support the hypothesis that an increased level of inflammation increases the risk of new onset diabetes. By Ed Susman, Contributing Writer, MedPage Today

Melon Farm named in Outbreak

August 30, 2012

Divabetic SummerA southwestern Indiana cantaloupe farm is the source of  some of the salmonella responsible for an outbreak that sickened people in 21 states and killed two Kentucky residents, the Food and Drug Administration announced.

Salmonella collected from Chamberlain Farms in Owensville matches the “DNA fingerprint” of the salmonella strain responsible for sickening 178 people, including 62 who were hospitalized, FDA spokeswoman Shelly Burgess said.

She stressed that federal and state agencies were still investigating whether there might be other sources of the salmonella involved in outbreak.

“Just because we’ve identified this as one source, things just don’t stop here. We’re still assessing the full scope of this,” she said.

Tim Chamberlain, who runs the 100-acre Chamberlain Farms, said it had stopped producing and distributing cantaloupe on Aug. 16, when the FDA alerted him that the fruit could be tainted.

Burgess said the FDA’s advice to consumers hasn’t changed: Consumers should ask stores where cantaloupe they purchased came from and get rid of the fruit if it was purchased from Chamberlain Farms.

“And if they can’t verify where it came from, they should throw it out,” Burgess said. “If in doubt, throw it out. That’s our advice.”

Reel said consumers should wash all produce. For cantaloupes and other melons with rough, pitted surfaces, people should use a vegetable brush on the rind. The fruit should then be patted dry with a clean towel before it’s sliced or cut up. Rick Callahan, Associated Press

Ann Romney Sizzles with ‘Diagnosis To DIVA!’ Speech

August 29, 2012

Divabetic SummerAnn Romney looked A-M-A-Z-I-N-G last night as she addressed the Republican Convention. She wore a bright red silk taffeta Oscar de la Renta dress that made ’60’ look ‘sensational.’  Seriously, Suzanne Somers should interview Ann for a sequel to her best-selling book,  The Sexy Years”!

Her dress was stunning — a plain dress, the cut was plain, but the color and the material were spectacular; it fit her image and what she wanted to communicate. She was dressed in a way that women would like, and not be threatened by. No matter what your political beliefs, there’s no denying this woman’s inner and outer beauty.

Ann Romney gave a ‘diagnosis to diva!’ speech. What’s not deeply appealing about a woman who has struggled with illness (breast cancer, and multiple sclerosis) and miscarriages and emerged with grace? Surely the day that Ann and Mitt Romney stood in the doctor’s office and heard her diagnosis, they didn’t think she would be onstage the way she was tonight. She said she hasn’t lived a storybook marriage because she and her husband have faced hard knocks. But isn’t that what a storybook marriage is? A love that can withstand everything?

Ann Romney was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1998 and has credited a mixture of mainstream and alternative treatments with giving her a lifestyle mostly without limitations. In one of those activities, equestrianism, she has consequently received recognition in dressage as an adult amateur at the national level and competed professionally in Grand Prix as well. In 2008, she was also diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ, a non-invasive type of breast cancer. She underwent a lumpectomy in December of the same year and has since been cancer-free.

Jessica Simpson will be Katie Couric’s First Guest on Talk Show

August 28, 2012

Divabetic SummerJessica Simpson will be Katie Couric‘s first guest on her new, syndicated talk show, “Katie,” when it premieres Sept. 10.

According to a statement from the show, Jessica Simpson will talk about her “most intense challenges — including losing the weight she put on during her pregnancy — the journey to get back into shape . . . and how she’s learned to juggle motherhood and her billion dollar business empire.”

On the subject of getting back in shape, Simpson signed a $4 million deal with Weight Watchers to help shed pregnancy pounds before giving birth to daughter Maxwell in May, Us Weekly reported.

The magazine also said that one of the actress-designer-singer’s most recent dietary fixes has been cutting out the alcohol. She tweeted earlier this month: “Responsibility has drastically changed my life. Saturday night drink of choice . . . water! :).”

Spirituality Helps Mental Health

August 28, 2012

Divabetic SummerIf you’re not in touch with your spiritual side, here’s a good reason to start: It may hold benefits for your mental health.

A new study shows that  spirituality  is linked with greater mental health. In particular, spirituality in the study was linked with decreased neuroticism and increased extraversion, researchers found.

“With increased spirituality people reduce their sense of self and feel a greater sense of oneness and connectedness with the rest of the universe,” study researcher Dan Cohen, an assistant professor at the University of Missouri, said in a statement. “What was interesting was that frequency of participation in religious activities or the perceived degree of congregational support was not found to be significant in the relationships between personality, spirituality, religion and health.”

The researchers analyzed several survey results, which included information from 160 people. Forty of them were Buddhists, 41 were Catholics, 22 were Jews, 31 were Protestants and 26 were Muslims, according to the study, which was published in theJournal of Religion and Health.

Specifically, that study examined how health was better among people who considered themselves “very religious” compared with those who considered themselves only moderately religious or nonreligious.

They found that the “very religious” scored themselves slightly higher than the moderately religious and nonreligious in areas of quality of life, access to doctors, healthy habits, emotional health and job satisfaction. However, the nonreligious people scored their physical health higher than the religious people in the study, HuffPost Religion reported.

Katy Perry’s Dramatic New Hair Color

August 28, 2012

Divabetic SummerDivabetic’s Diabetes Roundtable DIVA inspiration, Katy Perry has changed up her her hair color ONCE AGAIN!  It seems like only yesterday that  her famous mane was jet black (as were her bra and undies, visible through her totally sheer dress). But for her latest magazine shoot for L’Officiel Paris, she’s gone a shade of orange to bring out her inner ‘lioness.’

If we just ended a relationship with John Mayer, we’d want to ROAR too!

“That’s one way to get someone out of your hair!” declared People magazine, drumming up the cliche that life events like a breakup inspire drastic changes to our looks

It’s not the first time the pop star’s gone orange — she accidentally went ginger last summer followed by a two-tone orange ombre — but we actually like this new hue more than her neon bluedark purplepale rosecotton candy pink… you get the point.

Unfortunately, it’s probably not here to stay. Katy’s hair colors are harder to keep track of than her ever-changing (rumored) boyfriends.

Would you dye your hair a different color every day if  you could?!

Experts agree its best to wait for at least 1/4″ hair growth, so about 4-6 weeks.
