Ultimate Diet Secrets Of Olympians

August 1, 2012

Divabetic SummerFor most of  the American Olympic athletes, weight control is all about pretty restrictive diets according to U.S. Olympic Committee Nutritionist, Jennifer Gibson, Msc, RD, IOC DIP, who has been preparing many of the Team USA’s top athletes for competition in London this summer.

“Basically, everything they put in their mouth has to be monitored and thought about. We usually use a phased diet approach. Six to eight weeks out, we change from the initial diet to one with more careful considerations. They can choose to go on strict plans with portions meted out, or they can just get serving guidelines and build their own meals”, says Gibson.

“They have a whole food-based diet that’s very, very natural: regular meats, fresh fruits, nuts and seeds, veggies. These aren’t processed foods. That’s because it’s mainly the quality of food that’s how they’re getting their nutrients.”

“What we know is that you can get the same nutrition from convenience foods, but it won’t be of the same quality. The quality of the protein you get from chicken breast is just higher than what you’ll get from a powder. Their bodies are their jobs, so how they feel really determines how well they’ll succeed,” Gibson adds.

Victoria Beckham Suffers from Low Self-Esteem

August 1, 2012

Divabetic SummerVictoria Beckham, fashion designer, pop star and David Beckham’s wife revealed the reason she has a stoic look in photos: she has low self-esteem. Who knew?

Access Hollywood revealed why the singer-turned-fashionista does a lot of pouting when posing for pictures with or without David Beckham.

“I think I only stopped smiling when I got into fashion. Fashion stole my smile! I’ve created this person. And I’m not saying that’s not me, but I wouldn’t say that’s the whole me…. It’s an armor that goes up,” Victoria said.

Beckham has a growing fashion-line and things can get hectic at times. If you’ve ever seen an episode of “America’s Top Model,” things behind the scenes can go from zero to sixty in a flash. Apparently, fashion has a way of stripping one’s smile away.

While Victoria Beckham says a smile is lacking at times due to fashion, perhaps there is really more to it.

“I do have my insecurities. Maybe that’s why I look a little bit serious. I’m not like that. I want to get in there, do what I’ve got to do, and get home to my kids,” Beckham said.

Thanks to husband David Beckham, the so-called armor she talks about above comes down when the soccer legend is around. Apparently, he gives her a lot of confidence and reasons to, well…smile.

Can Turmeric Prevent Type 2 Diabetes?

August 1, 2012

Divabetic SummerSupplements containing a compound found in curry spice may help prevent diabetes in high-risk patients.

Thai researchers found a daily dose of curcumin over nine months prevented new cases of diabetes among people with prediabetes — abnormally high blood sugar levels that may progress to full-blown type 2 diabetes.

Curcumin is a compound in turmeric. Research has long suggested it can fight inflammation and oxidative damage to body cells, both of which are thought to feed a range of diseases, including type 2 diabetes.

The study, led by Somlak Chuengsamarn of Srinakharinwirot University, found that the supplement seemed to improve the function of beta-cells, cells in the pancreas that release the blood sugar-regulating hormone insulin. Researchers speculate the anti-inflammatory effects of curcumin help protect beta-cells from damage.
