Flying Squirrel Wins Gold in Women’s Gymnastics Individual All-Aroun

August 2, 2012

Divabetic SummerGabby Douglas now has an individual all-around gold medal to go with the team gold she won with her U.S. teammates. Dubbed the “Flying Squirrel” for her impressive array of aerial skills, Douglas edged Russian gymnast Victoria Komova, who took silver. Bronze went to Aliya Mustafina of Russia by way of a tiebreakerafter American Aly Raisman finished with an identical score of 59.566.

The 16-year-old Douglas scored 62.232 while Komova scored 61.973. The Russian star took the last turn on the floor and couldn’t reach the score needed to overtake Douglas. Beaming after finishing a sterling turn on the floor, Douglas could only wait and watch. Komova needed a score of 15.36 or higher to pass Douglas for gold butonly earned a 15.100 for a solid routine.

Douglas opened with a 15.966 on the vault, despite coming perilously close to stepping off the track on her landing. In first place after the first rotation, Douglas scored 15.733 on the uneven bars, 15.500 on the beam and closed with a 15.033 on the floor.

Douglas’ all-around gold medal marks the fourth time that an American woman has won the event, including the two previous golds won by Nastia Luikin (2008) and Carly Patterson (2004). Mary Lou Retton was the first American woman to win the all-around title in 1984. AP/The Huffington Post  |  Posted: 08/02/2012 1:30 pm Updated: 08/02/2012 3:30 pm

Ann Curry Tweets ‘Despair’

August 2, 2012

Divabetic SummerAnn Curry has been keeping a low profile since her departure as co-host of the “Today” show but she broke her relative silence in an intriguing way on Wednesday.

Curry tweeted, “When I despair I remember that throughout history, truth and love have always won,” she wrote, referring to the Gandhi quote as “one of [her] favorites.”

The message followed her initial tweet of the day, “Good morning Twitterverse. Your unbelievable kindness resonates. You have made me love YOU even more.”

Note to Ann: Since you left we’ve been tuning in to Good Morning America!

Curry returned to the network in mid-July to cover the tragic mass shooting in Aurora, Colorado, and was supposedly going to cover the Olympics with the “Today” show gang live in London, though she has not yet appeared on air. Curry was replaced by her “Today” colleague Savannah Guthrie, and was renamed “Today” anchor-at-large and an international and national correspondent for NBC News.

If your parents or grandparents have diabetes, don’t despair!  A study of the Pima Indians illustrates that family history does not guarantee your demise or health. One group of Pimas moved to southern Arizona while the other stayed in northern Mexico. Those in Mexico retained their active lifestyle and simple diet and experienced almost no diabetes. In contrast, the group in Arizona adopted a sedentary lifestyle and the typical American diet. By age 35, 50 percent had type 2 diabetes.

How depressing is your diet?  The happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic talks to real people about their eating habits at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, PA.

Katy Perry Confesses ‘Never Say Never’ To Marriage

August 2, 2012

Divabetic SummerDiabetes Roundtable’s July Inspiration, Katy Perry proves a bright and colorful outlook on life as well as in fashion are the keys to getting over heartache.

Elle magazine transforms pop princess Katy Perry into an enchanting fuchsia temptress on the cover of its September fashion issue, as she smolders in a pink embroidered crepe dress from Bottega Veneta.

In the issue, Katy Perry opens up about the possibility of a second marriage, “I obviously have a lot to say right now…I’m a woman who likes to be courted — strongly,” she mused. “Never say never, I guess you’d say. I’ll let love take the lead on that.”

The pretty in pink look is embellished with silver sequins around the waist accentuating the “Firework” singer’s fabulous curves. Perry added even more sparkle to her look with her now-signature purple hair, styled by Rita Hazan, and some rocking new bangs.

Katy Perry speaks out about being a role model, saying, “I have no regrets… I’m not going to be everything to everyone. I can’t tell a person when it’s time for them to have sex. Or if they should have a cigarette… But I try to live my life with a lot of integrity, and hopefully that sends a message.”   By Gregory DelliCarpini Jr

New Victoria’s Secret Model Bregje Heinen’s Fitness Secret

August 2, 2012

Divabetic SummerWhile Victoria’s Secret Angel Doutzen Kroes grew up as a competitive speed skater and Candice Swanepoel confesses her workout routine includes running on the beach or sidewalk throughout the summer, new Victoria’s Secret model Bregjie Heinen admits she isn’t exactly the most athletic of the group. “I don’t really work out that much. I don’t go to the gym,” Heinen explained before a recent yoga session with Kristin McGee.

So how does she have a figure worthy of a spot in a Body by Victoria campaign? It’s all in the genes. “My mom is really skinny, too. I got it from her,” she said. “I’ve never done yoga before.”

Heinen, who hails from a small town two hours outside of Amsterdam where “there’s no clubs and everybody knows each other,” says she does work some exercise into her everyday life. “I do like to walk a lot. Mostly in New York. When I’m going somewhere, I’d rather just walk there.”

Heinen’s life after joining the ‘Angels’ has been quite the whirlwind. “I never thought about [modeling] before,” she explained, “People would tell me sometimes that I should model, but I was like, ‘I don’t know!’”

Of course, she named walking in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show as one of her most exciting achievements so far. However, the Dutch beauty also confessed she admires the looks and careers of Adriana Lima and Rosie Huntington-Whitely. Can we expecte Heinen to pursue a multi-hyphenate career like her Angel idols in the future?
