August 7, 2012

Divabetic SummerDivabetic pays tribute to the incredible Whitney Houston on the free diabetes podcast, Diabetes Roundtable.  Available for free at www.divabetic.org  and i-Tunes.

The happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic says he’s proud to salute Whitney Houston on the eve of her  film, Sparkle,” Whitney’s extraordinary talent is a part of the soundtrack of our lives – even watching the Olympics – it’s hard not to think of her breathtaking, ‘One Moment In Time.’ Her talent, her beauty and her faith make her our DIVA inspiration for August. We’re hoping her strong and powerful voice will motivate others to raise awareness for diabetes.”

Whitney Houston‘s turn as the mother of three sisters who encounter the downsides of fame in the new movie “Sparkle” has been viewed as a performance that could have relaunched her career.

But in light of Houston’s February death, it will be seen as the performance that “adds another diamond to her legacy,” says Houston’s co-star, Tika Sumpter, who portrays one of the late legend’s on-screen daughters.

The Secret To Making Whitney Houston ‘Sparkle’

August 7, 2012

Divabetic SummerAfter two Academy Award nominations and 25 years of styling, Ruth Carter took on her biggest task to date: working with Whitney Houstonon Sparkle, which would be the singer’s last on-screen performance.

In a recent interview with Celebuzz, the costume designer opened up about dressing Houston for the film, her inspiration for the sparkling attire and the on-set wardrobe malfunctions of stars Jordin Sparks and Tika Sumpter.

Prior to meeting the cast, Carter admits she was apprehensive about working with the late Whitney Houston.

“I was nervous about meeting Whitney. I wanted to be super beyond prepared because I knew that fashion was laid at her feet for most of her life,” Carter told Celebuzz. “I worked with the best collectors, [and] I wanted a fresh approach to her wardrobe… I wanted to take Sparkle out beyond its limits!”

Where did she get inspiration for the ’60s-style ensembles?

Carter, who designed 14 gowns and stage costumes for the film, studied the work of Rudy Gernreich, toiled over Balenciaga’s designs and studied magazines on avant garde and retro-chic fashion.

Despite all the preparation, she admits there were still some wardrobe malfunctions on set. “It is normal, everyday business as usual to have a wardrobe malfunction — or two, or three!” she said.

“Jordin Sparks’ vintage red suit had a little teeny tiny hole that we did not see until the cinematographer zoomed in on her. We stitched a strand of pearls on top of the hole to hide it,” she said.

“The biggest malfunction was with the jewelry dresses, as I liked to call them. I bought two-inch stones in red, black, and clear that were linked together like chain mail. They weighed a ton! When we filmed, Tika Sumpter‘s dress in particular kept falling apart. We’d have to keep stopping because if we kept going, the whole dress would be on the floor!” she revealed.

Check out Carter’s designs when Sparkle hits theaters August 17.

Serena Williams Criticized for Crip Walk Dance at Olympics

August 7, 2012

Divabetic SummerDivabetic’s Diabetes Roundtable inspiration, Serena Williams was so overjoyed after defeating Maria Sharapova in the Olympic singles and winning the gold that she broke into a Crip Walk dance.

“It was just me. I love to dance,” Williams told reporters who inquired about her Crip Walk. “I didn’t know what else to do. I was so happy, and next thing I know I started dancing and moving. I didn’t plan it. It just happened.”

When one naive reporter asked what the name of the dance could be — “The Wimbledon?” or “The Serena?” — Williams said, “Actually, there is a name. But I don’t know if I — it’s inappropriate. It’s just a dance we do in California.”

“For the uninitiated, the Crip Walk is a funky little hip-hop dance move made famous by Crip gang members in Compton in the 1970s,” wrote Fox Sports’ Reid Forgrave.

Another Fox Sports reporter, Jason Whitlock, downplayed the so-called controversy, saying: “What Serena did was akin to cracking a tasteless, X-rated joke inside a church… Serena deserved to be called out. What she did was immature and classless. She made a mistake, something we all do.”

Others took to defending the tennis champ.

Weight Training Reduces Risk of Developing Type 2 Diabetes

August 7, 2012

Divabetic SummerMen who do weight training regularly (for 30 minutes per day, five days per week) may be able to reduce their risk of type 2 diabetes by up to 34%, according to a new study by Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) and University of Southern Denmark researchers. And if they combine weight training and aerobic exercise, such as brisk walking or running, they may be able to reduce their risk even further – up to 59%.

This is the first study to examine the role of weight training in the prevention of type 2 diabetes. The results suggest that, because weight training appears to confer significant benefits independent of aerobic exercise, it can be a valuable alternative for people who have difficulty with the latter.

The study was published online in Archives of Internal Medicine.

“Until now, previous studies have reported that aerobic exercise is of major importance for type 2 diabetes prevention,” said lead author Anders Grøntved, visiting researcher in the Department of Nutrition at HSPH and a doctoral student in exercise epidemiology at the University of Southern Denmark. “But many people have difficulty engaging in or adhering to aerobic exercise. These new results suggest that weight training, to a large extent, can serve as an alternative to aerobic exercise for type 2 diabetes prevention.”

Type 2 diabetes is a major public health concern and it’s on the rise. An estimated 346 million people worldwide have type 2 diabetes, and diabetes-related deaths are expected to double between 2005 and 2030, according to the World Health Organization. More than 80% of these deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.

August 7, 2012

Divabetic Summer has lost 35 pounds of the 70 she gained during pregnancy and “she can’t wait to reveal the results, “reports Life & Style.

“She’s doing great!” her best friend CaCee Cobb told Life & Style. “Are you kidding? She’s motivating all of us. We have our weekly Weight Watchers meetings, and it’s so much fun. We all keep one another on track.”

Jessica is said to be ecstatic with the results she’s achieving.

“She loves this diet because there aren’t any foods that are off limits,” a source told the US edition of OK! magazine.

“For healthy, long-term weight loss, she’s been told to use most of her points on lean protein and fruits and veggies, but if she craves a treat she can have it. Indulging once a week is actually encouraged, which Jess loves.

“Jessica has been sticking to her program like a pro. She’s doing the Weight Watchers points program and she’s got a notebook that she uses to write down everything she eats.”

“She’s so happy that it’s paying off because at her last weigh-in!” the source said.
