Darlene Cates, Mother In ‘What’s Eating Gilbert Grape’, Loses 240 Pounds

August 9, 2012

Divabetic SummerDarlene Cates‘ life really did mimic her art. The actress played Leonardo DiCaprio and Johnny Depp‘s morbidly obese mother Bonnie in 1993′s “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.” In the movie, Bonnie hadn’t left the house in years. Before then, Cates hadn’t either.

She spent five years at home, unable to walk, weighing in at 575 pounds, the Dallas Morning News reported. Today, Cates is nearly half her size – and thinking about returning to acting.

In a video interview with the paper, the now 331-pound Cates said she receives letters from fans who say she has changed their perception of overweight people forever.

Having turned down roles that she felt portrayed her weight as a joke, she told theDallas Morning News she had some projects lined up before the most recent of a number of health scares that left her in the hospital for nearly all of 2011. While she still can’t walk, she is intent on being healthy enough to attend her grandson’s confirmation in October.

Before she landed the “Gilbert Grape” role, she appeared on a 1992 episode of “Sally Jessy Raphael” about women who were home-bound by their weight, the L.A. Timesreported. “This was something that I needed to do,” she said in an earlier video interview. “I had already begun to feel better about getting out of the house, but it was a mighty big step.” The author of the book “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?” brought a video of the “Sally Jessy Raphael” episode with him when he sold his screenplay and met with the movie’s director, Lasse Hallstrom, according to the L.A. Times.

Dieting never seemed to work for long for Cates, the Dallas Morning News reported, as she turned to food for comfort when her husband, a Marine, was overseas. She even tried an early version of gastric bypass in 1981, People reported, which helped her lose 100 pounds at the time, until the weight slowly crept back on. (She later stressed that she doesn’t believe surgery is a quick fix. “That thing that made you fat in the first place? They don’t cut that out during surgery,” she told the magazine.)

But her weight really became a problem after she contracted an infection related to a Dalkon shield, an early form of intrauterine contraception, the L.A. Times reported. But even after recovering from that, she wasn’t able to stand, and she developed depression that made it hard to leave the house. Eventually, she began taking the prescription depression medication Prozac and joined a weight-loss program called Take Pounds Off Sensibly or TOPS, according to the paper.

Cates didn’t say in the Dallas Morning News interview if TOPS is responsible for her most recent weight-loss success, but she is on the track to better health!

Whitney Houston’s Daughter Honors Singer’s Memory with Tattoo

August 9, 2012

Divabetic SummerWhitney Houston‘s daughter and adopted son marked the singer’s 49th birthday — the first since her death — by getting memorial tattoos of doves.

Daughter Bobbi Kristina, 19, and brother-turned-boyfriend Nick Gordon visited Inksomnia Tattoo in Alpharetta, Ga., Wednesday night to get matching designs on their right wrists featuring the singer’s initials, a quartet of the beloved birds of peace and two small crosses.

“The doves have a spiritual connotation, flying free I suppose,” said Inksomnia owner Mike Cummings, who personally inked Kristina while another artist handled Gordon.

Cummings said the couple walked in with a film crew for their new reality TV series and outlined their vision for the indelible memorial to the singer.

“They were happy at times, and sad at others. When you would talk about their mom, they got sad, but we tried to keep their spirits up,” Cummings told the Daily News.

The daughter of the late music icon posted a photo of the new body art on Twitter.

“Tat tat tatted YURP.. ;) now your truly ALWAYS with us mommy (: we love you,” tweeted Kristina, who has been an Inksomnia customer ever since her mom took her there at age 15 to get her belly button pierced.

Gordon, 22, was informally adopted by Houston as a minor and caused a stir when he began dating Bobbi Kristina shortly after the singer’s death.

“Happy Birthday Mom You will be forever missed,” he wrote on Twitter Thursday.

The couple is filming the reality show, “The Houston Chronicles” for Lifetime.

Lady Gaga Leaks Her New Vogue Cover Photo

August 9, 2012

Divabetic SummerHere’s hoping Anna Wintour has a sense of humor about such things.

After practically live-tweeting her anticipation, Lady Gaga went and leaked the September 2012 cover of Vogue—featuring her, obviously—on her fan site.

“SHH DONT TELL TWITTER/ SEPT ISSUE OF VOGUE MAGAZINE/ Sorry Anna but the underground kids deserve it. bisous!” the pop star wrote alongside the sneak peek.

“Don’t worry I’ve been txting Wintour all morning trying to get that cover queens. next im sending bagels to VOGUE (complex carbohydrate war),” Gaga tweeted yesterday, only to inform her little monsters today, “AHHH! The Vogue Express dropped off the SEPTEMBER ISSUE yesterday morning. IM A COVER GIRL, and ITS FAB! Can’t wait to show u tonight!”

Then, tonight: “Im so excited to post the SEPT ISSUE OF VOGUE in 30 min! Photographed by MERT & MARCUS. Also behind the scenes film on VOGUE.com.”

This marks Gaga’s second time on the cover and, not surprisingly, she doesn’t in the least bit resemble the androgynous pink-wigged singer on the March 2011 cover.

Instead, Wintour, Grace Coddington & Co. have the “Born This Way” artist squeezed into a fuchsia Marc Jacobs mermaid gown that nips and tucks here and balloons there. And this time, the hair of choice is a platinum afro.

But, really, the style wouldn’t be Gaga-esque if didn’t look horribly uncomfortable, right? By Natalie Finn.

Is Alzheimer’s Really ‘Type 3′ Diabetes?

August 9, 2012

Divabetic SummerEmerging research on the widespread degenerative brain disease known as Alzheimer’s suggests that this prevalent form of dementia is actually a type of diabetes. Published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, a recent study out of Rhode Island Hospital (RIH) confirms that Alzheimer’s is marked by brain insulin resistance and corresponding inflammation, a condition that some researchers are now referring to as type-3 diabetes.

Dr. Suzanne de la Monte from RIH is the one responsible for making this fascinating connection, having found in her research that diabetes is closely associated with several key neuronal factors implicated in dementia. It turns out that Alzheimer’s progresses as a result of the brain developing resistance to insulin, which in turn prevents proper lipid (fat) metabolism. Over time, these lipids build up in the brain rather than properly absorb, which results in increased stress and inflammation, as well as the symptoms commonly associated with dementia.

“This study points out that once AD (Alzheimer’s Disease) is established, therapeutic efforts should target several different pathways — not just one,” says Dr. de la Monte. “The reason is that a positive feedback loop gets going, making AD progress. We have to break the vicious cycle. Restoring insulin responsiveness and insulin depletion will help, but we need to reduce brain stress and repair the metabolic problems that cause the brain to produce toxins.”

“[W]hile it is positive to see studies like this help us understand some of the causes of Alzheimer’s Disease, turning to drugs to treat these symptoms is heading in the wrong direction,” says Health Impact News (HIN) about the RIH study. “Type-2 and type-3 diabetes is a lifestyle issue, and can be controlled or even prevented by dietary choices and avoiding too many drugs. There has also been tremendous success in controlling and eliminating diabetes through a low-carb and high-fat diet.”
