Dressing for Diabetes During New York Fashion Week

by

Divabetic SummerWhat’s a diva to do? We’re in the middle of the glitterati house bound at  Lincoln Center during New York Fashion Week having a Diabetes Numerology Game moment — bumping into Katie Holmes, having a low, surrounded by the paparazzi and praying Joan Rivers and her Fashion Police team doesn’t declare us a fashion “NO” for reaching into our Duane Reade bag to grab our glucose tabs. It’s just another day in our GLAM MORE, FEAR LESS life!

Help us, Halle Berry!

Sometimes it’s fun to imagine where the heck you’d put an insulin pump while you’re sitting in the front row during New York Fashion Week. Since 12.6 million, or 10.8% of all women aged 20 years or older have diabetes you might expect that fashion designers would be a bit more considerate of the needs of our diva-licious community.

Unfortunately, Diane von Furstenberg, Council of Fashion Designers of America president and grande dame of New York Fashion Week, showed a Spring 2013 collection with skirts so short that they left little to the imagination as well as no where to wear a insulin pump.  The inspiration: Globe trotting to exotic locales. Colors, silhouettes and ornamentation inspired by la dolce vita in Rome, the gardens of Marrakesh and the deserts of Jaipur.

Divabetic SummerThe look: Gypsy princess with a whiff of “I Dream of Jeannie” humor. Palazzo pants, draped jumpsuits, tailored crepe jackets and vests with contrasting color borders, tunics with beaded collars, pearl-encrusted T-shirt, flowing caftans worn with slim silk faille trousers, dresses wrapped like saris, sandals with chunky chain ankle straps, silver ball or leather curlicue decoration. We fell in love with the rich color palette of coral, lime, green and violet.

Sure  the who’s who of the fashion and media industries including Valentino, Oscar de la Renta, Bravo’s Andy Cohen and Sarah Jessica Parker who sat next to us in the front row loved it but we left asking ourselves if we  have to go back to injecting insulin in order to be fashion-forward?

Thankfully, Diane von Furstenberg tried to bring fashion a little more into the future by collaborating with Google to launch “Glass by Google” glasses on the runway.

Don’t Miss upcoming ’Divabetic – Makeover Your Diabetes’ - our largest diabetes outreach event of the year promoting a diva attitude for living well with diabetes.
