Most Portions at Restaurants Exceed Nutrition Recommendations

May 24, 2012

Diva TalkRadioA whopping 96 percent of America’s chain restaurant entrees fell outside the range of the USDA’s recommendations for fat, saturated fat and sodium per meal, according to a new analysis from the RAND corporation, published in the journal Public Health Nutrition.

“If you’re eating out tonight, your chances of finding an entree that’s truly healthy are painfully low,” lead researcher Helen Wu, assistant policy analyst at RAND, told USA Today.

Wu and her team evaluated 28,433 regular menu items and 1,833 children’s menus at 245 restaurants around the country between February and May 2010. They looked at the USDA recommendations for daily maximum intake in calories, fat, saturated fat and sodium and divided that by three to arrive at a government recommendation for a single meal. And while the majority of dishes fell below the USDA’s calorie limit for a meal (667 calories), they did not meet the requirements for fat, saturated fat and sodium (which, according to the government regulations, should not exceed 767 mg per meal).

“Many items may appear healthy based on calories, but actually can be very unhealthy when you consider other important nutrition criteria,” Wu told the Los Angeles Times.

Sodium, in particular, was problematic – according to the report, the average dinner entree packs a whopping 1,512 mg, more than the CDC’s recommended adequate intake for an entire day (and not too far from their recommended maximum intake of 2,300 mg). And while the average calorie total was a more reasonable 674, fat and saturated fat counts were well above limits at 32 g and 12 g, respectively.

And don’t think you’re doing your diet any favors by ordering an appetizer instead of a main dish — the researchers reported that those meal “starters” often had more calories, fat and sodium than any other item on the menu.

While fast food restaurants are often the most vilified chains, the truth is that family-style restaurants, like Red Lobster and Denny’sactually had “significantly more” calories, fat and sodium than their drive-thru counterparts.

“Restaurants that made nutrition information easily accessible on websites had significantly lower energy, fat and sodium contents across menu offerings than those providing information only upon request.”

More than 80 percent of us eat out at least once a week, so what chance to do we  really have of sticking to our diets when most menu entrees blow an entire day’s worth of recommended calorie, fat and/or sodium intake out of the water in a single sitting?

Does Weight Watchers Take The Worry Out of Dining Out?

September 23, 2011

Diva TalkRadio: Dining Out With A Dietitian

Weight Watchers is considered to be one of the most successful weight loss programs of all time. With group support and a lenient eating program, it continues to prove very popular with participants of all ages and varied weight goals. The program’s eat-what-you-want approach teaches members an all-things-in-moderation approach rather than a “diet mentality.”

Many popular restaurants today list  Weight Watchers Points Plus menu labels next to a variety of menu items.  Weight Watchers points plus values are meant as a guideline only to help you make better choices when dining out.

But can anyone benefit from Weight Watchers menu labels when they’re dining out even if they’re not on the plan?  This is one of the topics were dishing on September’s Diva TalkRadio – Diabetes Roundtable.  Tune in to find out the answer on our popular show segment, ‘Dining Out With A Dietitian’ with Mr. Divabetic and Jessica Issler RD, CDE.

Song Lyrics That Make Us Hungry

August 7, 2011

Diva TalkRadio - Dining Out With A Dietitian

Sticking to your diet is hard enough especially when ‘temptation’ aka ‘chocolate’ waits for you around every corner or co-worker’s cubby at work. So I feel it’s utterly unfair to be accosted by a chocolate craving on a treadmill (!) and it’s coming from the song playing on your headphones. Can you feel me?!!!!

Well, that’s exactly what happened last week at New York Sports Club.  I was minding my own business, huffing and puffing on the treadmill, when suddenly Stevie Wonder starts harmonizes and rhapsodizing about chocolate! Seriously, I started daydreaming about chocolate instead of focusing on ‘feeling the burn’ (thank you, Jane Fonda!)  Have you ever heard Stevie Wonder’s ‘Do I Do’ song? With lyrics like these, you really have to wonder why Stevie’s not signed to Willy Wonka! Check out Stevie’s sugary sweet song lyrics:

Yes I got some candy kisses for your lips

Yes I got some honey suckle chocolate dripping kisses full of love for you

Yes I got some candy kisses for your lips

Yes I got some honey suckle chocolate dripping kisses full of love for you

Subway Introduces Fortified Bread

August 5, 2011

Diva TalkRadio - Dining Out With A Dietitian

Subway is fortifying its bread with vitamin D and calcium. The bread in a six-inch sub now has 30 percent of the U.S. recommended daily intake of calcium and 20 percent of the recommended intake of vitamin D — roughly the same as a glass of milk. Subway chose to add those nutrients, which are important for bone development, because a lot of people have trouble getting them in their daily diet.

Subway said each sandwich made to its standard formula already provides iron, vitamin A, two full servings of vegetables, and is free of artificial trans fat.

Subway isn’t the only quick-service restaurant brand targeting customers seeking more healthful options.

McDonald’s recently said it would provide more nutritious meals by reducing sodium, sugar and saturated fat across the board and replacing fries with apples as the default side dish in kids’ “Happy Meals.” The announcement came in the wake of a variety of new menu items with health halos, including additional fruit smoothie flavors and a reformulated grilled chicken.

Chick-fil-A, following the examples of McDonald’s and Starbucks, recently added oatmeal to its menu — something that Burger King has reportedly tested

Diva TalkRadio Rewind: Bacon vs. Sausage in a Food Aisle Face-off

July 7, 2011

Diva TalkRadio: Food Aisle Face-Off

Here’s the decision, courtesy of Judi Wilcox, one of Divabetic’s Charlie’s Angels of Diabetes Outreach.

Judi Wilcox, RD, CDE

Comparing bacon is like comparing colas. Remember that calories are coming from fat, and that is saturated fat. Sodium does not make pork or turkey bacon a bargain, but if you are bargaining for taste I choose the turkey bacon. Turkey bacon is generally lower in fat and calories. You can buy nitrate-free lower-fat organic turkey bacon at Whole Foods or grocers that offer organic selections.

Can you enjoy bacon on occasion?  Of course. Think of it more as a condiment then as an entrée. Whether or not your choice is turkey or pork, there are costs and benefits. While turkey bacon is lower in fat it may have more sodium and nitrites to enhance the flavors. Center cut pork bacon is cut closer to the bone so it may be leaner. On the other hand, turkey bacon is usually made from dark meat turkey which is higher in fat. Be mindful of the portion size indicated on the label because size matters in this face-off. In most cases, the turkey bacon usually is one strip and pork bacon is 2 strips. Now we cannot forget about taste.  Turkey bacon can taste as good as pork bacon depending on the brand.

All in all, this is a close call but I am going to go for the turkey bacon. Turkey bacon can taste as good as pork bacon depending upon the brand. If you really want to mix it up, try chicken sausage without nitrites. There’s less risk of cancer from products that are lower in fat, sodium or cholesterol and higher in protein.

Hands down the choice is moderation when you are talking bacon because what we’re really talking about is portion control. Pork or turkey bacon even a small portion packs a powerful punch of sodium, calories, fat and cholesterol. A small amount of this divalicious food can satisfy your craving.
