Last week I returned from my vacation in Europe. I traveled to Madrid, Spain and Rome, Florence and Venice, Italy. Throughout my trip, I had an opportunity to see how different cultures are dealing with diabetes. My findings are preparing me for the next step in the development of Divabetic’s planned outreach to go international. In the coming months we will begin offering diabetes self-care information and advice with a global perspective on our website. Our journey begins with India.
PS: In the photo, I’m enjoying the view with the Basilica di Santa Maria del Fiore (Duomo) in Florence, Italy as the backdrop.
Hello Divas, Dudes and Friends,
Thursday, July 1, 2010 marks the fifth year observance of my former boss and mentor, Luther Vandross’ passing. It was while attending Luther’s memorial, held at Riverside Church in New York City, that I made a personal commitment to pursue diabetes outreach and give up my previous career in the entertainment industry. The fact that Luther’s stroke could have been prevented is what inspired me to create Divabetic. I wanted to help his fans, primarily African American women, to keep their houses homes by preventing diabetes-related health complications from affecting their families.
It’s sometimes hard to believe that back in 2005 I knew only one woman living with diabetes. Now five years later, I’ve reached over 20,000 women affected by diabetes, presented original Divabetic programming in 15 major U.S. cities and attended several health and diabetes expositions.
As Divabetic continues to grow, I feel the past five years has hardly been enough time to adequately serve our growing community’s needs and interests. Although I hear first-hand the positive impact of our outreach methods, I feel we have just begun to change the way people talk about diabetes.
During Divabetic’s early years, I was learning as I was doing and not fully aware of the challenges faced by women living with diabetes. Now after numerous conversations with ‘real life’ divas living with diabetes, our methods have improved for addressing the issues of concern they face.
I wish to thank my parents, friends, corporate partners and the many educators across the country who have supported my vision to make diabetes education fun, enjoyable and effective. With their help I have been able to keep Luther’s legacy alive. As with his music, our ‘glam more, fear less’ philosophy seems to have taken hold in the hearts of our ‘real life’ divas and continues to help motivate, inspire and encourage them to stay healthy and upbeat about their daily self-care.
Now, that’s the power of love.

Boa Dance with Max and Jessica.
“Divabetic’s educational stage show is not only entertaining, it makes living healthfully hip and doable. Women have repeatedly told us on our exit surveys that they loved Divabetic and are going to make lifestyle changes. We know when Max and Jessica are on stage because our Main Stage gets crowded and we hear lots of laughing. We are thrilled to have them “Prada”ing Pineapples and creating the longest boa congo lines while teaching menu substitutions. They are the highlight of our program.”
