When you read the labels on foods in your supermarket, it’s no surprise that you find plenty of sugar in products like cake mix, ice cream, jelly, cookies, and soda pop. But it’s alarming to see 12 grams of sugar in bottled pasta sauce!
So how much exactly is a gram of sugar? One teaspoon of granulated sugar equals 4 grams of sugar. To put it another way, 16 grams of sugar in a product is equal to about 4 teaspoons of granulated sugar.
Some types of bottled spaghetti sauce have double or triple the grams of sugar as other types. Here are a few of the products that I have almost as much sugar as a Pop-Tart.

In honor of Mother’s Day here’s some motherly advice for improving your health.
Riding a bike is a proven stress releaser. Regardless of if you are riding purely for pleasure or for a specific purpose, you will arrive at your destination feeling relaxed, energized and happier about the world and yourself.
It’s also one of the most effective workouts you’ll ever do that will make you a lean, fat-burning machine. #motherurdiabetes
There might be a few rays of economic sunshine breaking through the clouds but there are plenty of things bugging the typical family. People are holding down several jobs when they can find them and are pinching pennies to pay for gasoline that is bumping against $4.00 a gallon. Food prices and medical expenses are rising. This isn’t exactly the best of times and the worst of times by a long shot, but there does seem to be more than enough misery to go around.
Arthur Okun invented his “Misery Index” in the 1970s when inflation was headed to the heavens along with unemployment. He added these two together—the unemployment rate and the inflation rate—and generated a new compact measure to look at the health of the economy.
Okun’s index spoke to two very serious questions. Are my job prospects improving? And if I have a job, what’s happening to the purchasing power of my money?

Former Top Chef contestant and Chef Sam Talbot’s new book, THE SWEET LIFE: Diabetes Without Boundaries focuses on how diabetes has affected but not compromised Sam’s life or career, and includes his own tips on how to handle everything from work and hobbies to relationships and travel with discipline and enthusiasm. THE SWEET LIFE features 75 innovative recipes for fresh, all-natural dishes anybody, with or without diabetes, can prepare and enjoy.
Best of all, every one of Sam’s recipes is a dish home cooks will be proud to serve to family or guests; as he astutely points out, anyone concerned with his health would do well to eat like a diabetic, and when the food is this alluring, there is no reason not to.
“One great perk about being a chef (and getting some media attention from my stint on Top Chef) is being able to bring attention to causes I believe in, which is why I’ve teamed up with JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), an organization that provides resources for diabetes and is working for better ways to create and ultimately cure type 1 diabetes,” says Sam Talbot. A portion of the proceeds from the book will go to benefit JDRF’s Sweet Life Kitchen.

My 11-year-old son likes treats. There is a container of red licorice on the table I have to resist whenever I enter the kitchen to grab an apple. When his friends come over they ask me to make them ice cream cones or muffins or for some change for the ice cream man. In the meantime I grab a couple squares of dark chocolate. They are just a little on the […]
