Animal, Vegetable, Miracle is a wonderful account of author Barbara Kingsolver and her family working their Virginia farm and living on local or home-grown food for a full calendar year.
This meant no snack foods, no processed ones, no cucumbers from warmer parts of the world. “Six eyes, all beloved to me, stared unblinking as I crossed the exotics off our shopping list, one by one,” Kingsolver writes about the family’s adjustment to these strictures. With the exceptions of olive oil, grains and spices, everything they ate was simple and in season.
Was this a hardship? “If many of us would view this style of eating as deprivation, that’s only because we’ve grown accustomed to the botanically outrageous condition of having everything, always,” she writes. She thinks most North Americans have lost their awareness of what ought to be ripe when. So the book provides a shorthand for knowing which vegetables to trust at which times and what questions to raise about how they’re grown.
Animal, Vegetable, Miracle A Year of Food Life By Barbara Kingsolver with Steven L. Hopp and Camille Kingsolver 370 pages. $26.95. HarperCollins.

We’ve all heard of the expression, “something borrowed, something blue.” I’d like to add to that and say stick with something that’s tried and true on your wedding day. Just like your wedding day is not the day to try new makeup, a new hairstyle or a new self-tanner – it is not the day to start experimenting with your diabetes self-care. Comparing bacon is like comparing colas. Remember that calories are coming from fat, and that is saturated fat. Sodium does not make pork or turkey bacon a bargain, but if you are bargaining for taste I choose the turkey bacon. Turkey bacon is generally lower in fat and calories. You can buy nitrate-free lower-fat organic turkey bacon at Whole Foods or grocers that offer organic selections.
Can you enjoy bacon on occasion? Of course. Think of it more as a condiment then as an entrée. Whether or not your choice is turkey or pork, there are costs and benefits. While turkey bacon is lower in fat it may have more sodium and nitrites to enhance the flavors. Center cut pork bacon is cut closer to the bone so it may be leaner. On the other hand, turkey bacon is usually made from dark meat turkey which is higher in fat. Be mindful of the portion size indicated on the label because size matters in this face-off. In most cases, the turkey bacon usually is one strip and pork bacon is 2 strips. Now we cannot forget about taste. Turkey bacon can taste as good as pork bacon depending on the brand.
All in all, this is a close call but I am going to go for the turkey bacon. Turkey bacon can taste as good as pork bacon depending upon the brand. If you really want to mix it up, try chicken sausage without nitrites. There’s less risk of cancer from products that are lower in fat, sodium or cholesterol and higher in protein.
Hands down the choice is moderation when you are talking bacon because what we’re really talking about is portion control. Pork or turkey bacon even a small portion packs a powerful punch of sodium, calories, fat and cholesterol. A small amount of this divalicious food can satisfy your craving.

The first-ever Game Night at the Divabetic Club- NYC was officially declared ‘FREE, FUN & FANTASTIC’ by the divas! Who knew diabetes education could be almost as much fun as a trip to Disneyland?!!
Our free monthly meeting kicked-off with a rousing round of ‘Pass The Boa’, where members share their ‘diagnosis to diva’ stories. Divas living with type 1, type 2 and affected by diabetes touched on a variety of topics from accepting diagnosis, getting back on track with self-care, contemplating gastric band surgery, to dealing with the ever annoying diabetes police in our lives! Guest Divabetic educator, Joy Pape CDE, RN, Author of ’TheReal-Life Guide To Diabetes’ and her husband, Brian, joined us too. Joy and guest, Sharon V., from The Beth Israel Latino Institute, spoke to the group about the future of NYC healthcare and took questions before Mr. Divabetic did his best Oprah impersonation and commented, “LET THE GAMES BEGIN!”
With the hourglass keeping time, Divabetic Beauty & Style Expert and recent guest on the Dr. Oz show , Catherine Schuller, proved to be one of the fastest and fiercest thinkers during fun and laughter of the night’s featured game ‘Taboo.’ She eventually lost to dueling diva pals, Phyllis and Leslie.
The meeting ended with free, fabulous and gorgeous giveaways from our friends at Dr. Scholl’s, Diabetes Self-Management and Accu-Chek. One special diva, Phyllis J., received our newest bright white Divabetic Tote Bag (available soon in the Diva Shop.)

My 11-year-old son likes treats. There is a container of red licorice on the table I have to resist whenever I enter the kitchen to grab an apple.
