Divabetic’s national diabetes educational outreach program, ‘Divabetic – Makeover Your Diabetes’, mixes free beauty and fashion services and music with interactive diabetes education in a fun, comfortable setting to broaden the appeal of diabetes educational outreach for women. Our goal is to make every woman feel more beautiful inside and out through the help of a team of certified diabetes educators, registered dietitians, and beauty and fashion experts.

The free event hosted by the happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic offers both educational resources for caring for diabetes — including lots of opportunities to talk with certified diabetes educators and health professionals — as well as salon services such as makeup application by professional makeup artists and advice on choosing flattering dress styles.

According to recent reports, diabetes is a serious public health issue affecting an estimated 11 million women. Because of the increasing lifespan of women and the rapid growth of minority populations – among whom diabetes prevalence is two to four times higher than among white women – the number of women in the United States at high risk for diabetes and its complications is increasing.

Divabetic, a national nonprofit organization, is on a mission to promote better outcomes for women with diabetes or those at risk using our time-tested approach by appealing to women’s desire for attractiveness. Over the past seven years, our approach of glamorizing good health has received rave reviews.

Divabetic was inspired by the late music legend, Luther Vandross and created in 2005 by Max ‘Mr. Divabetic’ Szadek, who, as Vandross’ assistant of 14 years, witnessed his boss, mentor, and friend struggle in silence and solitude with the diabetes and its related complications

Happy Anniversary to Divabetic Club – Cleveland!  It’s hard to believe this uplifting group of women at risk, affected by and living with type 1 and type 2 diabetes is beginning their 5^th year together.  It’s seems like just yesterday Mr. Divabetic and his team of educators, beauty/fashion experts and fitness instructors hosted our national outreach program, “Divabetic – Makeover Your Diabetes”, with special guest: Mother Love as a kick-off to these free monthly diabetes educational programs. Who can forget all the tour buses filled with women from Cincinnati?

Through the years, one of the best educators in the country, Mary Ann Horst Nicolay,  along with her local team at the Diabetes Partnership of Cleveland has done an outstanding job of ‘passing the boa’ to raise awareness of diabetes in a fun, new way.  MaryAnn presented a dazzling array of special guests, hot topics and fun demonstrations to motivate, encourage and inspire the divas to stay healthy and upbeat about their daily self-care.

Divabetic’s new diabetes outreach ‘Golden Girls’ tour, hosted by Max “Mr. Divabetic” Szadek, features traditional diabetes education presented with a non-traditional approach and an attitude reminiscent of the popular Golden Girls’ characters: Dorothy, Rose, Blanche and Sophia.

So how the heck do the ‘Golden Girls’ relate to diabetes? Well, for starters there are four  characters on the hit 80’s sitcom  just like there are  four major types of diabetes:

Type 1 diabetes – Occurs when the body fails to produce insulin, the hormone that “unlocks” the cells of the body, allowing glucose to enter and fuel them. About 5-10% of Americans who are diagnosed with diabetes have type 1 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes – Results from insulin resistance (a condition in which the body fails to properly use insulin), and after several years, the insulin production decreases. Most Americans, about 90 – 95%, who are diagnosed with diabetes have type 2 diabetes.

Gestational diabetes – is a type of diabetes that only pregnant women get. If not treated, it can cause problems for mothers and babies. Gestational diabetes affects about 4% of all pregnant women. Women who have had gestational diabetes have a 20% to 50% chance of developing diabetes in the next 5-10 years.

Pre-diabetes – Pre-diabetes is a condition that occurs when a person’s blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes.
