Meet Diabetes Numerology game show contestant, Love W. from Pittsburgh, PA. Find out how well she does on Diva TalkRadio tonight at 6 PM.
Love’s story: “I’ve been around people living with diabetes all my life. I didn’t realize diabetes until I had most of the risk factors to becoming diabetic myself. I had gestational diabetes through both of my pregnancies. Now I’ve been living with Type 2 diabetes for the last few years. To me, a good support system is vital in managing my diabetes – whether I am sick or just not wanting to follow the rules.”

When it’s your fifth year anniversary, you comb through the archives and find divalicious memories such as this one. In 2006, the late Mrs. Vandross and I taped one of Divabetic’s very first public service announcements, courtesy of our friends at KYW-TV/CBS 3 in Philadelphia. Enjoy and share if you like.
In honor of Divabetic’s fifth anniversary, we’re offering a free download of our popular Numerology Game Book. Learn the meaning of your numbers in a glam new way!
Throw your hat (box) into the ring to fight diabetes. Enjoy photos from our groundbreaking, earth shattering and divinely inspired Hat Boxing program held at Bethel Deliverance International Church in Wyncote, PA. Click here for more photos on Divabetic’s FlickR page.
And, this Sunday, whether from the pew or the pulpit, encourage your congregation to get involved to help those we love and those we care about living with, at risk of and affected by diabetes. Link and download the Hat Boxing overview and share it with leaders at your house of worship.
Keep inspiring and keep passing the boa!
Mr. Divabetic
PS: Our thanks to Stephanie DaCosta of Bethel Deliverance International Church of Wyncote, PA for sending the pictures.
Happy Monday! As you begin your week, I would like to recap my weekend in the hope you find inspiration, motivation and a continued source of support.
On Friday, May 21st, we officially launched Divabetic’s Bad Romance Tour at the sanofi-aventis sponsored Community Health Partnership Health Fair at the Owen Dolen Recreation Center (Bronx, NY). In this program, we go one-on-one with participants to promote diabetes self-care management and feature a presentation entitled “Sugar Shock,” which exposes the amounts of hidden sugar in the foods we eat. Hopeless romantics no more, the audience discovered that breaking up was not hard to do.
And last night, how about Bret Michaels, who is living with Type 1 diabetes? I know that at least today, you agree Bret embodies Divabetic’s “Glam More, Fear Less” philosophy. Despite his most recent string of medical emergencies, Bret was “in da house” at the Celebrity Apprentice finale show in New York City and named Celebrity Apprentice, netting $250,000 for the American Diabetes Association. Give this “Rock of Love” star a boa-ovation!
Until the next time, keep inspiring and keep passing the boa!
“Divabetic’s educational stage show is not only entertaining, it makes living healthfully hip and doable. Women have repeatedly told us on our exit surveys that they loved Divabetic and are going to make lifestyle changes. We know when Max and Jessica are on stage because our Main Stage gets crowded and we hear lots of laughing. We are thrilled to have them “Prada”ing Pineapples and creating the longest boa congo lines while teaching menu substitutions. They are the highlight of our program.”
How I was diagnosed with diabetes: I was working for a home care dept. and one of the LPN’s needed to test her meter. She asked me for my finger and that reading 236. She asked if I would come in the next day and do a fasting blood sugar reading and that reading was 234. I was at my doctor’s office by the end of the week. That was September, 2001 and while driving home from that appointment I had no idea what I was going to do.
Upon arriving home I received a call from by best friend that her father had passed away and I had no time to feel sorry for myself. I was at my top weight. My sugars were high. It took me some time to turn myself around with education and support groups. I knew I had to change my lifestyle, eating habits, lose weight and most importantly educate myself. THAT was the FIRST thing I did. The more knowledge I get about this disease and my body, the more I understand.
Knowledge is power is what I like to say. In 2005 I started losing weight and keeping it off, and as of this writing I have lost approximately 50 to 55 lbs and have about 40 to 45 lbs to go. I certainly feel better, my clothes are fit ting better and in smaller sizes. I was wearing 3X and now I’m wearing XL.
The Divabetic program at the Diabetes Association of Greater Cleveland (DAGC) has done wonders for me. It’s a great support group that encourages me to keep going and educates me on many things. I’m so grateful for this group. My eating habits have changed completely and I eat smaller meals consisting of protein, vegetables, salads and small amounts of carbs. So much has been done for my family and myself. They (we) are eating healthier, exercising more and we’re realizing that diabetes is a very serious condition but can be controlled.
Diabetes does not control me – I CONTROL Diabetes, AND WILL CONTINUE TO CONTROL IT. I will continue to lose more weight and maintain the weight that I have already lost…. “I’M NOT DONE YET”!
Hi Catherine,
I am so thankful that I attended the “Divabetic” conference on September 27, 2008 in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.
It was a rainy day, but I drove all the way to Maryland from New Jersey. But, it was well worth the ride. The conference was great! I learned so much about diabetes and how to live with it on a day to day basis.
The conference emphasized the need for healthy eating, exercise, and a positive attitude in controlling diabetes! The conference emphasized that “life is not over” just because you are diabetic……..
The conference encouraged me to exercise more, eat healthier, and take my medication as required so that I can live a long and healthy life.
I enjoyed the great attitudes and enthusiasm of all the staff! Everyone was so nice and helpful! I look forward to attending the event again, when it comes closer to New Jersey.
Also, please count me in on being a “DIVABETIC MODEL”!!!
See you in “2009”!!!
Love you all,
1st time “Divabetic” Attendee
PS– Catherine, you are the BEST! Thanks.

My 11-year-old son likes treats. There is a container of red licorice on the table I have to resist whenever I enter the kitchen to grab an apple. When his friends come over they ask me to make them ice cream cones or muffins or for some change for the ice cream man. In the meantime I grab a couple squares of dark chocolate. They are just a little on the […]
It's a great time to soak up vitamin D from the sun's rays and breathe in fresh air. It's also a great time to try some light refreshing soup such as cold gazpacho soup. It is chock full of vegetables, fiber, and flavor. It is also low in carbs and sugar. I am sharing one of my most favorite recipes with you that coincidentally happens to […]

As 2011 comes to a close I highlight the articles I've created this month to help you better manage your diabetes. I continue to be convinced that having knowledge about the potential health problems that could occur with type 1 is not bad news. I view it as motivation to practice what we know we can prevent or at least delay the onset of these complica […]
