Celebrating Cinco de Mayo with Diabetes

Who wants a margarita?

Drinking alcohol like our two favorite daytime divas, Hoda and Kathie Lee,  can cause blood sugars to rise for people living with diabetes because alcohol is processed in the body very similarly to the way fat is processed, and alcohol provides almost as many calories.

Of course its hard to imagine a Cinco de Mayo celebration without a margarita. But did you know a frozen Strawberry margarita from Red Lobster contains over 350 calories! Yikes! Why not opt for your refreshing margaritas to be made on the rocks instead of frozen? The frozen margaritas are a veritable sugar bomb, providing upwards of 500-700 calories for the jumbo versions. Stick with a 3.3 ounce cocktail glass of margarita over ice, which clocks in at a much more reasonable 150 calories. Most people sipping on margaritas can’t snack on a few chips and then stop–we’re more likely to keep reaching for those warm, crunchy, salty tortilla chips until the basket is completely empty. And then the server brings another basket, and the mindless munching continues until your main meal arrives. To avoid this dilemma altogether, ask your server not to refill your chips and salsa. .

If you choose to drink alcohol, try to follow a calorie-controlled meal plan, one drink of alcohol should be counted as two fat exchanges.

It is a good idea to check with your doctor if you are overweight or have high blood pressure or high triglyceride levels before drinking alcohol. If you are in doubt about whether drinking alcohol is safe for you, check with your doctor.

Here are some other ways that alcohol can affect diabetes:

  • While moderate amounts of alcohol can cause blood sugar to rise, excess alcohol can actually decrease your blood sugar level — sometimes causing it to drop into dangerous levels.
  • Beer and sweet wine contain carbohydrates and may raise blood sugar.
  • Alcohol stimulates your appetite, which can cause you to overeat and may affect your blood sugar control.
  • Alcohol can interfere with the positive effects of oral diabetes medicines or insulin.
  • Alcohol may increase triglyceride levels.
  • Alcohol may increase blood pressure.

The happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic visited SUNY Downstate Medical Center to play his food game, Serve Taste or Trash! Game with healthcare providers, staff members, medical students and patients. SUNY Downstate Medical Center is one of the nation’s leading urban medical centers, serving the people of Brooklyn since 1860.

Mr. Divabetic’s Serve, Taste or Trash! Game aims to encourage kids of all ages to become more open-minded eaters. Each game features three different food and/or beverage choices. To play you must decide which choice you’d serve, which choice you’d taste and which one you’d trash.

How many calories are your drinking? Today’s Serve, Taste or Trash! Game challenge features Coca Cola, Poland Springs Water and Brooklyn Summer Ale. Mr. Divabetic with special guest divabetic, Lorraine Brooks tested each player’s ‘Beverage IQ’ with questions ranging from how alcohol affects your blood sugars to the number of cans of soda a day it takes to elevate your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. In addition, Downstate Medical healthcare providers and staff members offered their suggestions on how to increase your daily water intake.

Did you know? A new study indicates that drinking one or more cans of soda a day can increase one’s risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. One in five were at elevated risk of diabetes with as little as one can per day according to statistics published in the journal Diabetologia.

Since its inception, Divabetic has presented outreach programs in 15 major U.S. cities, reaching hundreds of thousands of women, their families and health care professionals.

Binge Drinking Increases Risk of Prediabetes

April 24, 2013

Divabetic: Diabetes At Happy Hour

Prediabetes in younger patients with early-stage hypertension may be one more risk to add to the list for heavy drinking, a study showed.

More than 10 drinks a day boosted the risk of prediabetes (serum glucose between 100 and 125 mg/dL) more than six-fold in a cohort study of stage 1 hypertensive individuals by Lucio Mos, of San Antonio Hospital at the University of Padova, Italy, and colleagues.

Having less than five drinks a day held neither harm nor benefit in terms of prediabetes, they reported here at the European Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation’s EuroPRevent meeting.

That finding was surprising because moderate drinking has been associated with a protective effect in cardiovascular disease and certain other conditions, commented session moderator Paul Dendale, MD, PhD, of the University of Hasselt, Belgium.

The hypertensive population studied may have accounted for the difference, he suggested.

“Alcohol is also increasing the blood pressure, so it might be that, there again, you have some effect in a population that is more sensitive to alcohol,” he told MedPage Today, concluding that the message remains an emphasis on moderation.

One limitation of the study may have been the definitions used for the drinking categories, with moderate alcohol intake defined by 50 to 100 g (five to 10 drinks) a day, whereas other studies have used lower levels such as three or more drinks a day as a measure of heavy drinking.

Surprising Findings on Alcohol And Breast Cancer

April 21, 2013
Divabetic's Diva Inspirations Kathie Lee and Hoda

Divabetic’s Diva Inspirations Kathie Lee and Hoda

A study published online  in the Journal of Clinical Oncology found that breast cancer survivors who have a drink a day actually fare better than women who don’t!

Questions surrounding a potential link between alcohol use and breast cancer risk have been a concern since 1977, when data from the Third National Cancer Survey showed a significant association between alcohol use and the increased risk of a variety of cancers, including breast cancer. Since then, additional studies have confirmed that daily alcohol use can increase a woman’s relative risk of developing breast cancer by 7 percent.

It was less clear, though, whether women who drank alcohol — before and/or after their breast cancer diagnosis — were at an increased risk of recurrence or death.

Should you immediately take up drinking alcohol? Probably not. But you should remember to do other things that improve your heart health and decrease your cancer risk, like achieving and maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, and eating a healthy diet. And if you are someone who enjoys life to the fullest by having an occasional drink, go for it! Exercise Reduces Brain Damage from Alcohol

April 18, 2013

aerobics classAerobic exercise can help prevent and even reverse some brain damage linked to high alcohol intake, according to new research carried out at the University of Colorado Boulder.

The finding, published in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research, suggests that routine aerobic exercise such as running, bicycling, and walking may help reduce the damage to the brain’s “white matter” among people who drink alcohol excessively.

White matter is made up of bundles of nerve cells that act as transmission lines that control communication between several different areas of the brain, according to one author, Hollis Karoly, a doctoral student in CU-Boulder’s psychology and neuroscience department.

Karoly explains, ”We found that for people who drink a lot and exercise a lot, there was not a strong relationship between alcohol and white matter. But for people who drink a lot and don’t exercise, our study showed the integrity of white matter is compromised in several areas of the brain. It basically means white matter is not moving messages between areas of the brain as efficiently as normal.”

How White Wine Can Damage Your Teeth

April 12, 2013

nbc-popupDid you know that white wines are very acidic, meaning they’re bad for your teeth? Divabetic’s Diva Inspirations Kathie Lee and Hoda may not be smiling after they read this news.

A new study has found that even though it doesn’t discolor the teeth directly, white wine such as Chardonnay or Pinot Grigio can wear out the enamel on your teeth. The acidity in the wine creates rough patches on your teeth which will easily stained and discolored by other foods and drinks.

A new research has found that drinking too much white wine can actually damage the protective layers around your teeth which make them more sensitive to hot, cold, or sweet foods.

When your teeth become weaker, it is easier to get stained by cigarettes, coffee, tea, or dark berries and foods. Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/3692730

Does Drinking Alcohol Make Your Skin Look Older?

April 8, 2013

s-KATHIELEEHODA-large300Whether it’s a night on the town with friends or a glass of wine with dinner, alcohol plays a role in the lives of many people living with diabetes.

Alcohol, along with caffeinated drinks like coffee and soda, will dehydrate you and deplete vital skin nutrients, making your skin appear dull. Doctors have also found that those who drink heavily tend to have less healthy diets, which can deprive the skin of necessary nutrients that keep it looking healthy and young

Drinking alcohol also causes facial blood vessels to dilate, and repeated overindulgence can cause the vessels to dilate permanently, causing red, spidery veins

And if you have a pre-existing skin condition, excessive alcohol use can worsen it.

The happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic talks with skin expert, Sue Perez on tomorrow night’s Diabetes Roundtable podcast inspired by Kathie Lee and Hoda with our featured topic, ‘Drinking Divas & Diabetes.’

Drew Barrymore’s New Wine Debuts

March 29, 2013
Divabetic

Divabetic

In April, we will be talking about ‘divas, drinking and diabetes!’

We’re kicking things off  starting with actress Drew Barrymore  who is partnering with wine distributor Wilson Daniels. She’s created  Barrymore Pinot Grigio, composed of grapes grown in northern Italy. The wine has already garnered praise from those more concerned with taste and less with the famous name attached. Drew’s new label even took home gold at the prestigious Le Challenge International du Vin in France.

“I love wine, and it’s always fun when you can do something in your work life that you love in your personal life,” Barrymore told Unfiltered. “It seems very authentic to me. … Pinot grigio has always been a love of mine. If I go to a restaurant, it’s a safe, surefire bet and I love it.”
Excuse me but I’m slightly confused — I thought Drew was sober! Doesn’t it seem strange that someone who had a very public battle with drugs and alcohol at such a young age is now making wines?
Drew  says, “I’m not (sober) and I don’t claim to be – quite the opposite. I’ve tried to find the balance. I hope it’s balanced.”
Though she has done some quirky and questionable things as a celebrity, there have been no reports of her relapsing into drug use. She seems to have found good work that matches her talents, service and charity efforts she believes in, and good people around her.
Barrymore told the Angeleno that she was involved in nearly every step of the process of creating the pinot grigio, a process that took three years. ”I’ve been to the winery and to Italy numerous times,” she said. “I liked the idea of working with a family who has done this for generations because I wanted to name this after my family.”
