Kim Lyons made a name for herself by sharing her weight-loss wisdom on the hit TV show The Biggest Loser. She also appeared at Taking Control Of Your Diabetes Conference & Health Fair with the happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic (see podcast interview below.) Kim’s 10-day ‘Fat Flush’ plan is designed to melt fat and transform bodies. It worked for her and for hundreds of her clients, and it can work for you as well.

She advises those who are struggling with their weight and can’t seem to get started on a diet plan to let go of the fear of failure and throw away excuses.

Rule 1: Super Fat Flushing Water
Cleansing your system is one of the best ways to jump-start your body’s fat burning ability. To cleanse your system, try my special 5-ingredient Fat Flush Water. It’s simple to make, it tastes great and the science backs up its powerful benefits.

Besides the main ingredient water, the Fat Flush contains grapefruit that’s loaded with vitamin C to help your body turn fat into fuel. The tangerine increases your sensitivity to insulin, stabilizes blood sugar, and stimulates genes to burn fat. Cucumber helps you feel full and acts as a natural diuretic, which means less bloating and water retention. And lastly, it has mint leaves, which is not only refreshing but also promotes better digestion and stomach calm.

Make a big pitcher every morning. Drink at least one 8 ounce glass three times a day before each meal for 10 days straight.

Why Weight Loss Can Turn Type 2 Diabetes Around

February 7, 2013
Weight Loss Pays Off

Weight Loss Pays Off

Not so long ago a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes at 50 or 60 seemed final, one of those no-turning-back kind of moments. Chances are the doctor told you the disease could be managed, but a return to a day when blood sugars might fall back into normal range (less than 126 mg/dl) was not on the table. An amazing new study, published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, reports that weight loss can turn diabetes around.

If you’re willing to make changes in what you eat and ramp up your activity levels, diabetes could be put into full or partial remission. (Makes you want to sign up for ‘Dancing With the Stars’ doesn’t it?)

Researchers randomly assigned 4,500 overweight people living with Type 2 to either an intensive diet and exercise boot camp-style intervention or a less stringent weight-loss education program.

Not surprisingly, the group given intensive diet and lifestyle counseling showed the most success. More important, 11.5 percent of the intensive lifestyle intervention group saw partial or complete remission of diabetes (remission was defined as blood sugars less than 126 mg/dl and hemoglobin A1c of less than 6.5 percent) at the one-year mark. Compare that figure to the other group’s success rate: 2 percent.

Do You Know How Much Sugar Is In Coffee Creamer?

January 20, 2013
Divabetic Eye Openers

Divabetic Eye Openers

Wake up and smell the sugar. Oops, I mean the ‘coffee.’ How much sugar do you pour into your morning cup of coffee? If you stop by your local Dunkin Donuts (where America really runs on ‘sugar’ not ‘Dunkin’) you’ll see that there’s plenty of grown folk asking the friendly counter people to add 8 to 9 teaspoons of sugar  to their coffee. This might sound way too sweet to you until you realize that there’s over 78 teaspoons of sugar in Coffee-mate French Vanilla 32 fl oz container.  It doesn’t even seem like its possible to fit 78 teaspoons of sugar into the container! I use Coffee-mate on a daily basis and I was in shock when I found out how much sugar is in a container.

Coffee-mate describes their product as deliciously creamy, with a classic vanilla taste that’s perfect anytime. Their Coffee Creamer is free of cholesterol, lactose, trans fat and gluten with all of the flavor and no clumping, so you can up the taste simply and healthily.

When you get a mug of black coffee, how many sugar packets and creamers do you pour inside? And what’s the alternative?

For most people who add what they love to call a ‘healthy’ amount of sugar (4-5 packets) they might want to try So Delicious coconut milk creamer, but it still contains sugar unless you get the unsweetened coconut milk found in the dairy section. Unsweetened Almond milk is okay too. A lot of people use canned unsweetened coconut milk, like Thai kitchen, as it is fairly thick. Be aware that if one of the ingredients is evaporated cane juice that;s a code word for sugar.

Freaky Friday Diet: Switch Plates with Your Child to Lose Weight!

January 18, 2013
Freaky Friday Diet

Freaky Friday Diet

Can switching eating habits with your child, like a scene from the movie ‘Freaky Friday’, actually help you to adapt a healthier way of life?

“Many moms fret over their children’s eating habits while letting their own slide, says Sally Kuzemchak, RD. “Instead, follow your own nutrition wisdom and eat like your kids do (or in some cases, how they should). You’ll get healthier, feel better, and probably even lose weight!”

We pester our kids so why not ourselves about finishing their milk, eating their veggies, and laying off junk food? We know that good nutrition can mean better health for them now and even into adulthood. Sure, your child’s probably constructing a volcano out of mashed potatoes and ketchup, but he or she also eats only until he or she’s full, skips the salt and butter, and squeezes in a calcium-rich glass of milk at every meal.

“Eating is a partially innate, and partially a learned process,” explains Dr. Elizabeth Wallace, a clinical dietitian at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. “Young and school-aged children are still learning the skills of eating—experimenting with textures, using silverware, and experiencing new tastes. As we get older and already have those skills, we learn to connect food and eating with our emotions.”

Not surprisingly, guilt-ridden dieters and impulsive eaters are more likely to be obese compared to those concerned with cooking nutritious meals for themselves and their families. A small study of middle-aged women published in the journal Health Education and Behavior found that food attitudes like these were accurate predictors of obesity risk factors like BMI, body fat percentage, and waist size.

Fortunately, if you set down your BlackBerry and pay attention to your plate instead of your portfolio performance, getting back to basics can be child’s play.

Here, we’ve identified seven healthy eating habits you should steal from the kids’ table. And don’t worry, tater tots, Goldfish crackers, and juice boxes are not on the menu. #freakyfridaydiet

Is The Color Blue the Ultimate Secret to Eating Less Food?

December 18, 2012

Blue Food?

Blue Food?

New research suggests that there’s a natural human aversion to blue-colored food.

“In tests, many people could not bring themselves to eat foods colored blue,” says Kenneth R. Fehrman, author of Color, The Secret Influence. Fehrman speculates this anti-indigo instinct is the result of years of evolution, during which our ancestors learned to equate blue and purple with poisonous or spoiled.

Weight concious people  can use ‘blue turns me off’ rule to their advantage by harnessing the hue to curb hunger. Try using blue plates or blue napkins for subtle appetite-suppressing cues. If you’re trying to control your  fridge-raiding habits, why not install a blue bulb to make munchies de-materialize?

Pink Blows Her ’55 Pound Weight Gain’ One Last Kiss Goobye!

October 18, 2012

Divabetic FallSince giving birth to her fist child, Willow Sage, back in June 2011, Pink has been working hard to get her usually taut-and-toned figure back. Well it looks like all the gym time has payed off, the new mom flaunted her six-pack on the cover of SHAPE magazine’s newest issue.

I guess, we can easily say, Pink blew her 55 pound weight gain one last kiss goodbye, by looking at the SELF magazine cover.

Although the 33-year old songstress refused to “rush” into dropping the baby weight, she admits she had some work to do after packing on 55 pounds during her pregnancy. “I ate a lot of cheesecake during those nine months,” Pink tells the fitness magazine of her pregnancy cravings. “Also anything sour, Sour Skittles, Sour Patch Kids, key lime pie.”

When it came time to shed the extra pounds, Pink recruited celebrity trainers Jillian Michaels and Jeanette Jenkins. “They both kicked my butt more than any other person I’ve worked out with,” she said. “They’re both amazing, and their bodies were all the inspiration I needed to get back into shape.” She committed to work outs six days per week, consisting of cardio, strength training, power yoga and kickboxing. Yowza!

In addition to her rigorous sweat sessions, the former gymnast maintains a primarily vegan diet, with the occasional fish or chicken.

See Mr. Divabetic’s nutrition game, Serve, Taste or Trash!  You must decide which one you’d serve, which one you’d taste and which one you’d trash.

Before you decide to “trash” a veggie for good, why not try to eat it raw? Raw veggies can be more appetizing than their cooked counterparts to people who aren’t crazy about vegetables. The flavors of raw veggies can be milder than those of cooked ones.

20% of Diet Supplements Make False, Dangerous Claims

October 4, 2012

Divabetic FallDieters beware: A new report has found that dozens of dietary supplements out there bear labels that make false, illegal claims that could pose a major threat to consumers.

Federal investigators purchased 127 types of supplements both online and in stores and found that 20% made unsubstantiated claims, with some saying they offered a cure for diabetes or cancer, or could help people with HIV or AIDS.

Companies that did submit proof of their claims cited sources like Wikipedia (!), online dictionaries, and decades-old reports. False labels run health risks in that they may convince some consumers to take the supplements rather than doctor-approved medication. In response, the FDA says it may ask Congress for more control to review supplement companies’ scientific evidence, something federal regulations do not currently require

Jessica Simpson Shows Off New Figure

September 23, 2012

Divabetic SummerJessica Simpson recently revealed she was 10lbs away from her pre-baby weight. The singer and actress went out in West Hollywood with her fiancé Eric Johnson and looked great in a glitzy get-up.

The 32-year-old wore a bead-embellished beige, white and brown frock which hung loosely over her arms and stomach.

But she made sure to leave her tanned legs on show which she dressed up in nude high heels.

She looked positively glowing with perfectly applied make-up, a half-up-half-down hairdo and stand-out hoop earrings.

The pair was not alone though as they left Fig & Olive restaurant, and travelled back with another couple plus her best friend KaCee Cobb in their car.

Jessica told talkshow host, Katie Couric earlier this month that she has had to make a special effort to shift the extra pounds following her labour on May 1

‘All the weight did not come out with the baby,’ she said.

‘I had to stay focused on my diet. I want to be as healthy as I can because I’m a mom now.’

She’s been following Weight Watchers after signing a deal rumoured to be worth $4m and has also been working out with a personal trainer.

The happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic is on location in Central Park, New York City to find out people’s reactions to Mayor Bloomberg‘s proposed Super Size Soda ban.

She’s Gaga for Second Helpings

September 20, 2012

Divabetic SummerWeight gain is no fun for anyone especially if it’s caught on camera! So why is everyone obsessed over celebrities gaining weight?!

Apparently, Lady Gaga, like screen legend Sophia Loren, can credit spaghetti for her new curves.  Diva fans will may recall actress, Sophia Loren once said,  ”Everything you see I owe to spaghetti.”

Lady Gaga started her new tour in Amsterdam by admitting she has put on 25 pounds, Gaga says she’s not concerned; she’s an Italian girl from New York who loves to eat.

“I’m dieting right now, because I gained, like, 25 pounds,” Gaga told radio host Elvis Duran when she called into his show just before she hit the road. “And you know I really don’t feel bad about it, not even for a second. I have to be on such a strict diet constantly. It’s hard because it’s a quite vigorous show, so I tend to bulk up, get muscular, and I really don’t like that. So I’m trying to find a new balance.”

Cruel critics have suggested that Gaga’s weight gain is the result of the amount of alcohol she consumes, but Gaga begs to differ, confirming it’s from her dad’s Italian cooking.

“I love eating pasta and pizza,” says Gaga. “I’m a New York Italian girl. That’s why I have been staying out of New York. My father [Joe Germanotta] opened a restaurant. It’s so amazing … it’s so freaking delicious, but I’m telling you I gain five pounds every time I go in there. So my dad wants me to eat at the restaurant, and I’m, like, I’ve got to go where I can drink green juice.”

Does Jessica Simpson Inspire You To Lose Weight?

September 15, 2012

Jessica on KatieIsn’t not easy being a celebrity. Imagine what it’s like to be being photographed from every (bad) angle on your way to the gym after  having a baby! YIKES!

Jessica Simpson decided that she needed to lose weight. Her reasoning for this she states is “There is a lot of pressure to lose weight but I’m not a supermodel. I’m just Jessica trying to eat real food in the real world and I really just wanna be healthy for my daughter.”

Her appearance on the new Katie Couric show, 4 months after the start of her diet revealed her 40 pound weight loss and a diva-licious attitude.

“I’m on my way and it feels amazing. Really I just wanna be a better version of myself,” said Jessica. You go, diva!

Talking on the debut episode of Katie today Jessica explained why the Weight Watchers program is working for her.

‘You have to track every bit, and you can’t get away with the bites because they add up,’ she said.

‘You have to be completely honest with yourself, and I think just creating that relationship of honesty with yourself is so good.’

The Los Angeles Times reports that “In addition to Weight Watchers, Jessica works with celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak. They execute a daily cardio routine…”

Celebrities enjoy the benefit of celebrity trainers, and weight loss companies that pay them to lose weight in return for the privilege of claiming responsibility. But the fact remains that the majority of overweight Americans, estimated to be around 74%, 34% of who are considered to be obese, do not have the benefit of personal trainers and endorsement deals.
