Paula Deen is a “Divabetic”

Newly anointed “Divabetic” Paula Deen is the first one to admit: “When I first found out I was diabetic, I had no solutions. I couldn’t even help myself, much less somebody else.”

Do you feel the same way? If so, tune in to Divabetic’s free monthly diabetes educational podcast, Diabetes Roundtable to help you journey from “diagnosis to DIVA! YOU can do it.

In this week’s issue, the 66-year-old Food Network star invited PEOPLE into her Savannah home to share how her family members adopted different weight loss strategies and lost an astounding 178 lbs. total.

By figuring out a diet plan that works for their particular schedule and lifestyle, Deen’s husband Michael Groover shed 60 lbs., her oldest son Jamie got rid of an excess 45 lbs., and her youngest son Bobby maintained his 33-lb. loss. But no one sacrificed their love of Southern food. Instead they learned to stick to Deen’s new mantra. “Moderation, moderation, moderation,” says Deen, whose new cookbook The New Testament due out this fall will include her go-to recipes and tips. “I love feeding people but now I also want to help people eat right.”

Of course, a few small changes to her cooking repertoire can’t hurt, either. Deen has reportedly swapped in Greek yogurt for creaminess in some of her recipes, HuffPost Food reported earlier this month.

Paula Deen Gets Dishy About Her Critics

February 24, 2012

Divabetic: Paula Deen

Paula Deen appeared on “The Today Show” in Miami while attending the South Beach Wine & Food Festival. Paula Deen and her son Bobby Deen were demonstrating how to cook a frittata but Al Roker wasted no time in asking the questions everyone wanted to hear. He opened by asking Paula about the backlash to her diabetes announcement and she said,

“I think it was from a few people that were kinda mean about it and hold it against me. But the people that care for me, Al, they came out like you wouldn’t believe, and they were the people that I care about.”

Bobby Deen also had some words for their critics. “When someone comes out and says they have an illness and people pile on it, it really says something about maybe who’s doing the talking.”

While the two mentioned that they are developing diabetes-friendly recipes to assist a lot of people with diabetes, Paula Deen admitted that she has “broad shoulders” when it comes to the naysayers. She also said that she is exercising.

Paula Deen’s Sons Are Unhappy With Her Decision

January 27, 2012

Paula Deen’s sons were so distraught over her decision to plug a diabetes drug, they nearly bolted from the family management to strike out on their own.

Paula’s sons, Jamie and Bobby Deen, were upset over her deal to endorse a diabetes medication because she was already taking a different diabetes medicine and responding well to it, sources told us. They said the sons “were worried about her health and didn’t want her to switch drugs. She had been taking a different drug for a while, and was doing very well.” They didn’t see any reason to change that. However, she appears to be doing equally well on the new treatment.”

Divabetic: Paula Deen

News is breaking tonight  that Food Network star Paula Deen, beloved queen of high-calorie, Southern cooking, is about to confess she’ll be eating her own dishes in moderation from now on because she has diabetes.

Paula Deen, 64, has not addressed the buzz, which started in April when the National Enquirer reported she has type 2 diabetes.

Insiders say the Georgia native has started changing her cooking approach and will soon make healthier options available at her Savannah, Ga., restaurant, The Lady & Sons.

Her son, Bobby Deen, has already jumped on the healthier food bandwagon. Earlier this month, he launched the series,  “Not My Mama’s Meals,” on the Cooking Channel, where he creates less fatty versions of his mother’s old-fashioned Southern recipes.

Sources say Paula Deen plans to soon announce her condition because she has cooked up a lucrative deal with a pharmaceutical company  to endorse the drug she’s taking.
