The Secret To Adele’s Updo Hairstyle at the Golden Globes

January 21, 2013
Adele's Updo Hairstyle

Adele’s Updo Hairstyle

The hottest beauty trend to emerge from the Golden Globes a week later seems to be  British Singer, Adele’s updo hairstyle. What? This news is surprising because a week ago I put Adele — Globe winner for her Skyfall theme song — firmly on my ‘Worst Dressed’ List. I think she was dressed rather ‘frumpy’ for a Rock n’ Roll goddess. If she’s ’21’ or thereabouts why is she dressing like she’s ’91’ or Betty White? Adele’s matronly look was compliments of Burberry, Van Cleef and Arpel jewels and Miu Miu shoes. Her makeup and hair were created by Michael Ashton for Michael Ashton Beauty.

Can you image Madonna wearing Adele’s ‘Knot Landing’ cocktail dress or hairstyle back in her “Material Girl” heyday? I sincerely doubt it. But judging from my twitter and facebook messages I am in the minority.

“Adele’s big hair matches her big voice,” declares Joico Int’l Creative Director Damien Carney. “It’s large and strong and evokes a modern ‘60s feeling.”

Here’s how to get the look:

1. Apply two drops of Joico Smooth Cure Leave-In Rescue to damp hair, comb through and blow dry with a large round brush.

2. Set hair with heated rollers to create volume and body. Remove rollers and brush through thoroughly.

3. Isolate the front hairline and clip away.

4. Mist the remaining hair with Joico JoiShape Shaping and Finishing Spray. Once the spray dries, brush through—the spray will make it easier to control and construct the shape.

5. Divide the hair into two sections, front and back. Beginning at the crown, backcomb large, horizontal sections at the scalp. Continue backcombing, switching to vertical sections at the sides and finishing in the front.

6. Without disturbing the volume, lightly smooth and gather the hair away from the face.

Adele sported an intricate interwoven bun that looks particularly good with blond or gray hair because you can see it. From the front she kept it clean and classic with a bit of a ’60s vibe.

Renee Zellweger’s Disappearing Act

January 20, 2013
Why is Renee M.I.A?

Why is Renee M.I.A?

Has Renee Zellweger  become Hollywood’s new Garbo?

That’s what we were asking ourselves at last week’s Golden Globes. Once a mainstay on the Red Carpet, Renee seems to have become less visible than Jennifer Lopez‘s panty lines. No you see her, now you don’t.

When Greta Garbo chose to end her career she made no public appearances and assiduously tried to avoid the publicity she loathed . As she had been during her Hollywood years, Garbo, with her innate need for solitude, was often reclusive. But contrary to myth, she always had many friends and acquaintances with whom she socialized, and later, traveled. She has been forever linked to her famous line in Grand Hotel: “I want to be alone.” But she later remarked, “I never said, ‘I want to be alone.’ I only said, ‘I want to be let alone.’ There is a world of difference”

So can a broken heart have anything to do with Renee’s recent disappearance? Or is it just a  celebrity coincidence that Renee’s ‘no show’ is at exact same time that her ex, Bradley Cooper, is riding high on his Golden Globe and Oscar nominations?

Renée and Cooper split in March 2011 after nearly two years together, apparently because the Silver Linings Playbook star wanted to concentrate on his career rather than a relationship.

A friend said at the time: ‘If I had to pick any possible mistress it would be Brad’s career. He worked really hard to get into leading man status.’

Well, it turns out the 43-year-old ‘Bridget Jones Diaries’ actress has been dating Doyle Bramhall II, the ex-boyfriend of Sheryl Crow. And she recently appeared on the Red Carpet  in support Berlin Fashion Week Hugo Boss show. Fashion critics agreed that Renee looked super-svelte as she worked the red carpet so it’s no wonder why she was smiling much of the time she posed for photographs before the catwalk presentation sponsored by Mercedes-Benz.  The actress is known for having one of the most disciplined diet and exercise routines in show business and her red carpet outfit proved she was eager to flaunt what she has worked so hard to maintain.

The star attended the label’s Autumn/Winter 2013 show looking incredible in a T-bar black minidress which showed off her sculpted arms and back and well as revealing plenty of her muscular legs. You go, girl!

Halle Berry’s Key To A Great Body is Managing Her Diabetes!

November 17, 2012

Divabetic FallI was watching The Wendy Williams Show the other day and found out Halle Berry‘s key to her amazing body was managing her diabetes. I found that inspiring. :-)

Halle Berry sat down with Wendy Williams on Thursday and revealed the reason why she’s able to stay so young looking is because she’s a diabetic.

Asked if she would gain 100 pounds for a movie role, the 45-year-old actress replied, “My heart would say yes because I feel like I would do anything for my craft, but my brain would say no because I’m diabetic and what that might do to me on a health level could be really dangerous.”

Williams followed up with an observation that Berry hasn’t changed much since she won her first beauty pageant in 1985. That’s when the “Cloud Atlas” star remarked that the reason was because “that little disease” forces her to be health conscious and “it’s really been a really good thing in my life.”

New Beauty Breakthrough in Hair Care for Fall 2012

October 29, 2012

Divabetic FallIt seems like every day a new beauty product comes out and with each one comes the same thing: Hope. Hope for perfect skin and hair. But every year there are a few breakthrough beauty products that really do deliver the impossible. Here’s one of our diva favorites: AVEDA INVATI

AVEDA INVATI is the three-product, hair growth-stimulating line from Aveda which is made up of 97 percent naturally derived ingredients. Their proprietary ingredient Densiplex is a blend of Ayurvedic herbs, including turmeric and ginseng, which help stimulate hair growth by reenergizing your follicles. What’s so mindboggling about this is that the line doesn’t use all of the usual harsh chemicals associated with traditional hair growth products. And, in the trials the company conducted, they found that the products reduced hair loss by 33 percent — impressive. If you’re concerned about thinning hair, volume loss, or even a tight and dry scalp, this line should be your go-to. The collection includes an Exfoliating Shampoo, $24, Thickening Conditioner, $24, and Scalp Revitalizer, $60.

Why Nail Stickers Are So Tempting To Try!

October 25, 2012

Recently, we stopped by the Young Women’s Leadership School of The Bronx (TYWLS) to find out what young girls thought of nail stickers. Although most of the girls think that nail stickers are way too expensive, they’ve all tried them!

We decided to give Sally Hansen’s Salon Effects nails stickers a try. We picked up the leopard print ones because that’s the theme of the TYWLS of the Bronx. For around $10 you get 16 stickers. Most nail polish bottles are $7 and you get many, many manicures out of them!

Don’t worry, if you don’t like leopard there are metallics, lace, and tons more patterns and style to choose from. All the packages have very helpful instructions and includes all the tools needed. The nail file includes a buffer on the other side so you can smooth out your nail. There’s a wooden cuticle stick so you push the sticker around the edges.

The only real drawback is that if you stretch the pattern  to fit your nail better it doesn’t look consistent. The pattern will look bigger on some nails and not others. Okay, we may be splitting hairs but it’s enough to bug us.

Overall, Sally Hansen’s Salon Effects nail stickers are perfect for a fancy, fun manicure but not an everyday thing.

Alessandra Ambrosio Models Victoria’ Secret $2.5 Million Bra

October 19, 2012

Divabetic FallSupermodel Alessandra Ambrósio was sitting home breastfeeding her 3-week-old son Noah when the phone rang and she got the surprise of her life.

“I just wanted to scream,” admits the mother of two, recalling the moment she was asked to model the coveted ‘Fantasy Bra’ in the upcoming Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. “But I won’t lie, I was really worried,” she admits.”I was in total mother mode.”

As soon as her doctor gave her the green light to work out, Ambrósio, 31, also mother to daughter Anja, 4, got to work shedding the baby weight. Starting with yoga and walking, the model turned up her routine after 60 days and added daily sessions of pilates and spin for cardio.

And while in L.A. for the summer, the brunette beauty also took advantage of the great outdoors. “I was playing a lot of volleyball on the beach, swimming and running after my kids. And breastfeeding always helps,” she says with a laugh.

But keeping healthy during her pregnancy was key; she stuck to fresh green juices, kale salads and fish, a diet she’s continued with the occasional splurge of pizza or ice cream. “My daughter loves cupcakes so we’ll share … but only sometimes!”

There’s less than one month to go until she hits the VS runway donning the $2.5 million Floral Fantasy gift set, which includes a Very Sexy push-up bra handset with amethysts, sapphires, rubies and diamonds (plus a removable 20-carat white diamond in the center), and the matching belt, adorned with more than 5,200 precious gems.

“It was perfect for me,” Ambrósio says of the set, designed by Long Island’s London Jewelers (who did last year’s bra, modeled by Miranda Kerr). “I felt they made it for me. It’s very romantic.”

And now that she feels so ready for the big day, nerves aren’t even an issue. “I’m pretty calm,” she says. “I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time.” Don’t miss Ambrósio on the runway at the 2012 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, airing Dec. 4 on CBS. By Jennifer Garcia

Pamela Anderson Still Rocks Her Iconic ‘Baywatch’ Swimsuit

October 17, 2012

Divabetic Fall 2012Pamela Anderson is back in her natural habitat: running on the beach in her red Baywatch bathing suit.

Sadly, this doesn’t mean the lifeguard drama isn’t returning to the small screen. People reports that the actress donned the sexy swimwear for a commercial she’s shooting in Rio de Janeiro.

Anderson first rocked the one-piece while playing C.J. Parker on Baywatch from 1992-1997.

This fall is a very nostalgic time for the actress. In addition to returning to her Baywatch roots for the commercial, Anderson also  returned to Dancing with the Stars  for the all-star season. Unfortunately, she and  dance partner Tristan MacManus were the first to eliminated from the sequined dance competition. Anderson first appeared on the reality competition’s 10th season in 2010. Katy Perry’s Obama-Inspired Manicure

October 13, 2012

Divabetic FallSome people support their candidate by donating money, others by slapping a bumper sticker on the car and a few even host fundraisers. But Katy Perryshows her support in a slightly different way: with her nails.

The queen of over-the-top talons flaunted her allegiance to the President earlier this week with a manicure that featured Barack Obama’s face, Democratic donkeys and patriotic stars and stripes. She debuted the left-leaning look at a fundraiser in Los Angeles on Tuesday, Tweeting a picture along with the caption, “Appropriate nails.”

Of course, the mani wasn’t the only way Perry lent support to the cause. She also performed at the fundraiser and shared on Twitter, “Today I am so honored to play for the President!”

MinxTastingRoom.com is selling the decal designs Perry wore for $19.95. And supporters of Mitt Romney don’t have to feel left out because the site is also offering Republican versions of the mani, complete with the former governor’s mug and little elephants.

Jennifer Aniston’s Ready to Wash That Man Outta Your Hair!

October 11, 2012

Divabetic FallA small hair-care company called Living Proof, based on science from MIT,MITD -7.14% has signed Jennifer Aniston as an investor and spokesperson in an attempt to make waves in the $10 billion hair-care industry.

Jennifer Aniston and her layered hairstyle—”the Rachel”—have been a style icon and powerful influence in the beauty industry for almost 20 years. She is set to take a starring role in marketing for the brand. Executives expect the 43-year-old actress to have input into new products, package design and other business areas in exchange for her equity stake, which they declined to quantify but called “meaningful.”

Packaging a Hollywood star with a blue-chip scientific team, including Robert Langer, one of medicine’s most prolific inventors, highlights how high the success bar is set for new beauty products venturing out in front of jaded consumers. In a market saturated with “scientific” claims, Living Proof at first thought its MIT credentials would be enough to create brand awareness but eventually saw they needed more firepower.

The brand’s science star is Dr. Langer, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a chemical engineer, whose work marshals technology like polymer chemistry and tissue engineering against disease and has spawned some two dozen companies. One company, MicroChips Inc., is developing a wirelessly programmed implantable microchip that shows promise for replacing painful injections to deliver medicine.

Ms. Aniston appeared to appreciate the novelty of their collaboration for the sake of better hair. “Bob Langer, are we curing cancer? Or diabetes? And he’s like, Yeah, I’m doing that as well as hair,” she said in an interview hours after meeting him.

“I like a scientific challenge,” Dr. Langer said in a separate interview. “I like to see if we can use science to solve problems.”

Ms. Aniston says she was “fascinated by the scientific approach” and asked for some product to test with her longtime hairdresser, Chris McMillan, salon owner and creator of the Rachel. Shooting in North Carolina at the time, Ms. Aniston says the “100% humidity” made for ideal test conditions for Living Proof’s frizz-fighting powers. She was surprised to find the No Frizz cream left her hair with “great curls.”

Taylor’s Swift’s Beauty Secret!

September 11, 2012

Divabetic SummerIt is no secret that Divabetic’s Diva Inspiration for September, superstar Taylor Swift favors the color Red. She has graced many red carpets, magazine covers, and most recently her upcoming album cover (also named “Red”) with beautiful bright red lips. This Cover girl has the right idea when it comes to shades for lipstick. We asked fabulous  professional makeup artist, Kiauna Hunt, owner of Diva Status (www.divastatus.com) , why  the color red remains a classic.

“Red can be paired with various styles from Biker Grunge to Grammy Award Red Carpet and still looks great doing both! As a makeup artist, Red is a staple color in my lipstick palatte because it brightens and whitens the smile of the person who’s wearing it and demands attention to the person that is viewing your lips, says Kiauna, who is featured on this month’s Diabetes Roundtable podcast in our ’Makeover in a Minute’ segment.

makeup artist, Kiauan Hunt “The color red also increases enthusiasm and provides a sense of protection from fear and anxiety. See how a little lipstick can change your outlook and in this case provide a “pick me up” to others as well? You don’t have to be a Covergirl to start brightening up your makeup look,” she adds.

Need a beauty boost? Here are Kiauna Hunt‘s  diva advice to help you find a red that works well for your skin tone:

If you have fair skin go for a red with a blue or brown-undertone.

Medium-to-dark skin go with deeper reds, with brown undertones.

Dark skin go for reds with pinkish or orange undertones.

Real-life Diva, TayrnAnd if you’re like September Diabetes Roundtable‘s real-life diva special guest, Tayrn, from Boston, MA and  you have red hair always choose a shade brighter than your hair and kick the old wives tale that “redheads can’t wear red” to the curb.

With any look, always remember to use a liner, which should be the same color as your lipstick or a shade lighter. Now go out and find the shade that works for you and show the world your award-winning smile that will give people something to sing about!
