Breaking News on Barbara Walter’s Health

January 22, 2013

1358708903_barbara-walters-fall_1Yesterday I felt lost watching the Inauguration on TV without Barbara Walters commenting on ABC. Thankfully Diane Sawyer acknowledged Barbara’s absence on air during the telecast. So I guess you can say, “I’m a Barbara Walters fan.”  She’s been waking me up in the morning almost my entire life. Plus, how would I know who is or isn’t ‘fascinating’ without her help?!

So how is my favorite News Diva?

Whoopi Goldberg updated viewers on Barbara Walters‘ condition saying that the ABC News veteran is still in the hospital with a fever but making progress towards recovery.

Walters was admitted to the hospital after she fell on a stair at the British ambassador’s residence in Washington, D.C. and cut her forehead on Saturday. On Tuesday’s “The View,” Goldberg read a statement from Walters, who said:

“First and foremost, I want to thank all the people who have called, written and been concerned about me. I am most appreciative. I’m running a low grade fever and the doctors are keeping me in the hospital until my temperature is normal. I’m pleased to say that it is going in the right direction and I will be home soon.”

OABC News’ Jeffrey Schneider said that Walters was “alert” and was in the hospital for observation “out of an abundance of caution.”

Walters’ last health scare was when she underwent heart surgery to replace a faulty valve in 2010.

This Girl’s On Fire at The Super Bowl

January 19, 2013
Diva On Fire

Diva On Fire

Alicia Keys will perform the national anthem at the Super Bowl on February 3 in New Orleans.

When she opens her mouth to sing her first note she’ll be making history too. The league said  that Keys’ three performances at the Super Bowl will be the most in the event’s history. She sang “America the Beautiful” before the 2005 game, and was part of the pregame show in 2008.

The Super Bowl teams will be determined Sunday, when the San Francisco 49ers play the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC championship game, and the Baltimore Ravens face the New England Patriots in the AFC championship game.

The NFL said in October that the’Sugar Sweetened Beverage Pushing Beauty’ Beyonce will be the star of the halftime show at this year’s Super Bowl. I was really looking forward to her high-energy performance until the news hit that she signed a $50 million dollar deal with Pepsi.  Beyonce has partnered in the past with First Lady Michelle Obama on the ‘Let’s Move’ campaign to help fight childhood obesity so her new career move is astounding to me. Her face is on the side of a can of Pepsi!!! I’m sure you are as aware as I am that drinking Sugar Sweetened Beverages (SSB’s) like soda, fruit juice and sports drinks is one of the major contributors to the childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes epidemic. Did know a 16 oz. bottle of Cherry Coke (I chose Coke because I refuse to even touch a can of Pepsi!!)  contains over 17 teaspoons of sugar? For this reason, she’s no longer one of Divabetic’s Dreamgirls.

Dear Abby Dies At 94

January 17, 2013

Divabetic Loves Dear Abby

Divabetic Loves Dear Abby

Pauline Friedman Phillips, who as Dear Abby dispensed snappy, sometimes saucy advice on love, marriage and meddling mothers-in-law to millions of newspaper readers around the world and opened the way for the likes of Dr. Ruth, Dr. Phil and Oprah, has died. She was 94.

I used to read her column daily in the Democrat & Chronicle newspaper when I was growing up in Rochester, NY.

Phillips died  after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease, said Gene Willis, a publicist for the Universal Uclick syndicate.

“My mother leaves very big high heels to fill with a legacy of compassion, commitment and positive social change,” her daughter, Jeanne Phillips, who now writes the column, said in a statement.

The long-running “Dear Abby” column first appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle in 1956. Mother and daughter started sharing the byline in 2000, and Jeanne Phillips took over in 2002, when the family announced Pauline Phillips had Alzheimer’s disease.

Pauline Phillips wrote under the name Abigail Van Buren. Her column competed for decades with the advice of Ann Landers, written by her twin sister, Esther Friedman Lederer, who died in 2002. Their relationship was stormy in their early adult years, but they later regained the closeness they had growing up in Sioux City, Iowa.

The two columns differed in style. Ann Landers responded to questioners with homey, detailed advice. Abby’s replies were often flippant one-liners.

Phillips admitted that her advice changed over the years. When she started writing the column, she was reluctant to advocate divorce :

“I always thought that marriage should be forever,” she explained. “I found out through my readers that sometimes the best thing they can do is part. If a man or woman is a constant cheater, the situation can be intolerable. Especially if they have children. When kids see parents fighting, or even sniping at each other, I think it is terribly damaging.” (I wonder what she would say about Kim Kardashian?)

She willingly expressed views that she realized would bring protests. In a 1998 interview she remarked: “Whenever I say a kind word about gays, I hear from people, and some of them are damn mad. People throw Leviticus, Deuteronomy and other parts of the Bible to me. It doesn’t bother me. I’ve always been compassionate toward gay people.”

Lady Gaga’s Beef with Kelly Osbourne Brings Out The Monster

January 12, 2013
Lady Gaga's Beef with Kelly Osbourne

Lady Gaga’s Beef with Kelly Osbourne

Lady Gaga’s beef with Kelly Osbourne makes her look like a Monster. Her  recent open letter to Kelly Osbourne, host of E!’s Fashion Police program proves that a healthy sense of humor is a diva’s best accessory during Awards season.

I love Lady Gaga‘s sense of style. I look forward to seeing what she’s going to wear on the Red Carpet as much as the next  ‘little monsters.’ Her looks are fun and often times even funny. But its hard to believe that after seeing images of herself around the world that she can’t handle criticism. Instead, Lady Gaga says she’s being ‘bullied’ by Kelly Osbourne.

Bullied?

I work in an all girls school in New York City. The girls who are being bullied are trying to fit in with the rest of the kids, they’re not showing up in meat dresses or popping out of eggs. Many of these girls are bullied because they have higher than average BMI’s just like Kelly Osbourne  who once was by Christina Aguilera for her weight.

Lady Gaga wrote the letter  in response to an interview Kelly Osbourne gave to Fabulous magazine in which she says, “Lady Gaga’s fans are the worst. They’ve said I should kill myself, that they hope I get raped, I mean it’s crazy but I’ve had all this in my life and I just try to ignore it.” Gaga hit back at Osbourne’s criticism of her fans as well as her show, writing, “It used to make me truly sad when I would hear people talk about your weight when you were younger, as I was bullied too. To see you blossoming in to a beautiful slender woman who makes fun of others for a living is astounding.” [Little Monsters]

Poor Lady Gaga – you’re no match for Kelly’s mama.

Sharon Osbourne took to her Facebook page to write an open letter to Lady Gaga after the pop singer slammed the 60-year-old’s daughter, Kelly Osbourne, in a post on her LittleMonsters.com blog following a recent magazine interview Kelly did in which she called Gaga’s fans “the worst.”

Sharon labeled Gaga “nothing more than a publicly seeking hypocrite and an attention seeker” who could use her publicity to incite real change. “I am calling you a bully because you have 32 million followers hanging on your every word and you are criticizing Kelly in your open letter,” she writes. “Are you so desperate that you needed to make this public?” Continuing, “A word from you would stop all the hideous, negative and vile threats from your ‘little monsters.’”

Despite the fact that her mother got riled up, Kelly said she is brushing it all off.

The Osbourne-Gaga feud goes back years. In 2009, Kelly called Gaga a “Butterface”and at last year’s Grammy Awards she deemed Gaga “disrespectful” for not walking the red carpet. In September, Kelly commented on Gaga’s weight gain saying, “I think she is pregnant.”

From Pepsi to GQ, Has Beyonce Gone Too Far?

January 10, 2013
Diva Don't

Diva Don’t

Is anyone else a little disgusted by the February issue of GQ magazine featuring Beyonce? She’s practically naked. It makes me wonder if a famous male celebrity like Hugh Jackman would be willing to pose seductively in a Speedo for the cover of a magazine to promote Les Miserables? Or Jay Z for that matter?

I highly doubt it.

GQ says its showing readers the 100 sexiest women of the 21st century — but it doesn’t look like they want readers to look further than their cover star, Beyonce.

Beyoncé Knowles is the third most honored woman in Grammy history; with a total of 16 awards, and with 44 total nominations she is now the second most nominated female artist in Grammy history, after Dolly Parton (who has 45 nominations). Overall, Knowles has won 184 awards from 529 nominations. On top of selling over 60 million albums as part of the group, Destiny’s Child, she’s also made three solo albums, all of them yielding No. 1 songs.
So why does she have to pose suggestively on the cover of a men’s magazine? Isn’t she at the point in her career where she can make the rules? Instead she’s seen grabbing her curly locks with both hands in a seductive pose that shows off her amazing abs, toned legs and underboob in a cropped football jersey T-shirt and red-printed underwear like a Playboy centerfold. Did I mention that she’s also wearing belly chain and her tiny undergarments also feature two zippers on either side?
And GQ promises the issue has even more sexy photos!
I say, please don’t release any more of these photos. I thought it was bad enough when Beyonce announced she signed a $50 million dollar deal with Pepsi to promote their products after working on Michelle Obama’s ‘Let’s Move’ campaign  but this cover somehow makes me even more sad.

What Should Anne Hathaway Wear To The Golden Globes?

January 8, 2013

anne-hathaway-covers-glamour-january-2013-02If the movie critics are to be believed, Divabetic’s December Diva Inspiration Anne Hathaway will sweep through this upcoming awards season with best supporting actress trophies in hand. Her rendition of the song I Dreamed A Dream in the Les Miserables movie, has made Hathaway the frontrunner at the Golden Globes, Oscars and SAG awards. This Sunday’s Golden Globe award ceremonies will surely be the first of a string of many accolades for the actress.

But the more important question to style watchers is, “What will Anne wear?”

Hopefully, underwear. Now that the secret’s out of the bag, so to speak, that A-List actresses like Anne routinely go ‘commando’ on the red carpet so they don’t have panty lines it makes us wonder if the next fashion malfunction will be ‘Golden.’

Anne Hathaway has, of course, been embraced by the fashion community. She’s rocked everything from princess ball gowns, old standbys like Valentino red dresses, metallic covered numbers from Armani Prive, and even a bondage-esque ensemble from Tom Ford. Of course, Anne’s borrowed all of these fabulous dresses she’s appeared in. Which leads us to the question: who’d want to wear let alone buy a dress that someone else had been wearing all night long without panties?

Yes, visible panty lines can ruin any good outfit, Anne – but there’s a good reason why most of us risk it and choose to wear them. It’s called ‘hygiene.’  Trust us there are invisible panty lines that will help to enhance your looks by making your figure seem sleeker and sexier. To avoid avoid panty lines at the Golden Globes, we’d like to recommend a ‘thong.’ Thongs simply don’t have the lines to show, making the choice easy for many women.

Yes, the ‘Devil’ wears Prada but that’s no excuse not to wear panties to the Golden Globes.

How Anne Hathaway Gained The Role of Fantine

December 31, 2012

les-miserables-film-hathaway-1Divabetic Diva Inspiration for December, Anne Hathaway was in the middle of shooting The Dark Knight Rises when Les Misérables began casting, and right away, she says, she “really, really wanted this part.” She first saw the musical at age seven, when her mother, who was the understudy for Fantine in a touring production, went on in the role. “I’ll never forget it—I just sat there sobbing,” she recalls. “And I don’t think it was just because I was watching my mother die, though that was definitely part of it. I was just so moved and felt so connected to her and the music and the whole production. I’ve been in love with the show ever since.”

With her charming performance in the 2002 Encores! stage production of the musical Carnival and her duet with Hugh Jackman at the 2009 Oscars, Hathaway had already demonstrated that she knew her way around a show tune. You’d think that she would have been at the top of any shortlist for Les Misérables. But she was told that the producers didn’t want to see her, because she was too young for Fantine and too old for the younger parts. Hathaway insisted, got the audition, and flew to L.A. to meet with Hooper. She had been asked to prepare Fantine’s big number “I Dreamed a Dream,” as well as “Fantine’s Arrest.” (“They wanted to make sure I could hit that E-flat,” she says, going on to demonstrate for me that, in fact, she can.) Hooper, clearly excited, asked her to work with him on Fantine’s death scene, and by the time they were through, three hours had passed.

“It was little short of astonishing—one of the greatest auditions I’ve ever had the privilege to witness,” Hooper recalls. “I’d already had a pretty extraordinary group of female film stars come in. But what was so inspiring about Annie was that I was sitting there still trying to work out, How does one act through song on film? How do you make these songs work in a close-up and get them to tell a story? And Annie provided the answer. It was one of those moments where I relaxed because I thought, Oh, it’s going to work. She gave me reassurance that what I was aiming for in my head was possible.”

Although I’ve heard  Les Misérables  is FANTASTIC, I must admit I’m probably not going to see it. Anne Hathaway’s character’s downward spiral is too depressing. It’s one thing to see Fantine’s story dramatically unfold on a rotating stage but the idea of watching a very realistic portrayal (selling her teeth and her body) on the big screen does not interest me.

Hillary Clinton Suffers Blood Clot

December 31, 2012
texts from Hillary

texts from Hillary

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton was admitted to the hospital after the discovery of a blood clot stemming from the concussion she sustained earlier this month.

Clinton’s doctors discovered the clot Sunday while performing a follow-up exam, her spokesman, Philippe Reines, said. He would not elaborate on the location of the clot but said Clinton is being treated with anti-coagulants and would remain at New York-Presbyterian Hospital for at least the next 48 hours so doctors can monitor the medication.

“Her doctors will continue to assess her condition, including other issues associated with her concussion,” Reines said in a statement. “They will determine if any further action is required.”

Clinton, 65, fell and suffered a concussion while at home alone in mid-December as she recovered from a stomach virus that left her severely dehydrated. The concussion was diagnosed Dec. 13 and Clinton was forced to cancel a trip to North Africa and the Middle East that had been planned for the next week.

The seriousness of a blood clot “depends on where it is,” said Dr. Gholam Motamedi, a neurologist at Georgetown University Medical Center who was not involved in Clinton’s care.

Clots in the legs are a common risk after someone has been bedridden, as Clinton may have been for a time after her concussion. Those are “no big deal” and are treated with six months of blood thinners to allow them to dissolve on their own and to prevent further clots from forming, he said.

A clot in a lung or the brain is more serious. Lung clots, called pulmonary embolisms, can be deadly, and a clot in the brain can cause a stroke, Motamedi said. Reprinted from the Huffington Post by Matthew Lee

Madonna Urges Fans to Quit Smoking!

December 22, 2012
Madonna butts out!

Madonna butts out!

This diva believes its not ‘Human Nature’ to smoke.  Superstar Madonna urged a crowd of smokers in Santiago, Chile to quit smoking or leave her concert.

The singer was soundchecking when she noticed that some in the crowd had lit cigarrettes. After suddenly cutting off her performance of “Human Nature,” she began berating the crowd.

“There are people smoking right now,” she said. “No smoking. If you’re going to smoke cigarettes, I’m not doing a show. You don’t care about me, I don’t care about you. All right? Are we going to play that game? I’m not kidding. I can’t sing if you smoke” Madonna said, then stormed off the stage.”

Unfortunately Madonna’s message can be seen as slightly confusing since she has been seen smoking in several of her videos and photo shoots.

The good news is nonsmokers still L-U-V Madonna! Her MDNA Tour came in at No. 1 on the list of highest-grossing tours for 2012. She performed for over 1.6 million fans and dialed up $228.4 million in sales.
