Mr. Divabetic’s Favorite Things #3: Blood Sugars with Bells

November 23, 2011

Divabetic: Mr. Divabetic's Favorite Things 2011

This item on Mr. Divabetic’s Favorite Things list was discovered while on Divabetic’s recent Golden Girls outreach tour. We outreached to thousands of seniors living with diabetes and learned that many are vision impaired which can make checking blood sugars very challenging. Next year, our Golden Girls outreach tour continues with tour stops in  Belle Glade, FL, Washington, DC and Los Angeles, CA. For more event details go to: divabetic.org

One of the Charlie’s Angels of Outreach, Judi Wilcox, from Hollywood, FL recommends the Prodigy Glucose Meter for seniors or anyone who has  vision issues. Its the only talking meter with a repeat button for the last message spoken, an external headphone port, audible memory and setup menus, and a customer service staff trained especially to assist blind and low vision customers. It provides the blind access to all blood-glucose-monitoring features available to fully sighted consumers. They need spoken access to all meter operations to ensure independent use—access is truly golden. Average price is: $85.00. For more information: prodigymeter.com

Richard Simmons Surprise Appearance On DWTS

October 13, 2011

Divabetic: Our hero Richard Simmons

We hate to admit it but we were a bit shocked by Richard Simmons’s recent appearance on Dancing With the Stars (DWTS). When our  63-year-old fitness hero appeared on DWTS Monday night to coach Chaz Bono, we couldn’t help but notice his skinnier frame and thinning hair.

He might have looked frail but the good news is the ’80s fitness guru is perfectly fine!  And everything we love about him – his eccentric, outgoing and frequently flamboyant personality, exuberance, high energy level  and encouragement were still off the charts. Plus, his trademark attire of a candy-striped Dolfin shorts and tank tops decorated with crystals was given a DWTS makeover. He’s now in head-to-toe gold! (Maybe he’s dressed to make a surprise appearance at Divabetic’s 3-city ‘Golden Girls’  diabetes outreach tour?!!)

Richard Simmons is as healthy as ever!,” Simmons’ rep Tom Estey said. According to Estey, Simmons is the same weight he was when he launched his original “Sweatin’ to the Oldies” video. (One of Divabetic’s all-time favorite fitness DVDs.) “He is completely healthy, happy and fit as a fiddle,” his rep added. “He’s happy, everything with him could not be better. “  Simmons has kept off his own 100+ pound weight loss for 42 years, has been helping others lose weight for 35 years, and that in the course of his fitness career has helped humanity lose approximately 12,000,000 pounds.

Simmons himself was happy with Bono and Lacey Schwimmer‘s performance on Monday. “Thank you for your kind words about my cameo on DWTS!” he tweeted. “It was so much fun to tape.”

Watching TV May Cause Type 2 Diabetes

August 17, 2011

Diva TalkRadio: TV & Diabetes

The Harvard School of Public Health published a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) that links television viewing habits to type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and premature death.  According to the study, more than 2 hours of daily TV viewing increased the risk for diabetes and heart disease while more than 3 hours increased the risk of premature death.  The study concluded that for every 100,000 people, two hours reduced viewing time could prevent the diagnosis of diabetes in 176 people, fatal heart disease in 38 people, and 104 premature deaths per year.

The Hefty Cost Of A Healthy Diet

August 10, 2011

Diva TalkRadio - Food Aisle Face-Off

MSNBC reports that making healthy choices as per the government’s new My Plate guidelines is “going to cost you at least $7.28 a week extra.” The University of Washington study concluded that healthy heating should be accessible to all income brackets. While spending an extra $400 a month on groceries may sound unreasonable, there is a possibility that you could save on health care down the line.

Subway Introduces Fortified Bread

August 5, 2011

Diva TalkRadio - Dining Out With A Dietitian

Subway is fortifying its bread with vitamin D and calcium. The bread in a six-inch sub now has 30 percent of the U.S. recommended daily intake of calcium and 20 percent of the recommended intake of vitamin D — roughly the same as a glass of milk. Subway chose to add those nutrients, which are important for bone development, because a lot of people have trouble getting them in their daily diet.

Subway said each sandwich made to its standard formula already provides iron, vitamin A, two full servings of vegetables, and is free of artificial trans fat.

Subway isn’t the only quick-service restaurant brand targeting customers seeking more healthful options.

McDonald’s recently said it would provide more nutritious meals by reducing sodium, sugar and saturated fat across the board and replacing fries with apples as the default side dish in kids’ “Happy Meals.” The announcement came in the wake of a variety of new menu items with health halos, including additional fruit smoothie flavors and a reformulated grilled chicken.

Chick-fil-A, following the examples of McDonald’s and Starbucks, recently added oatmeal to its menu — something that Burger King has reportedly tested

Diva TalkRadio fans will remember that  Jessica Issler RD, CDE,  one of the Charlie’s Angels of Outreach, gave Mr. Divabetic tips on eating well at Subway during our popular segment  ’Dining Out With  A Dietitan.’  LISTEN NOW:  http://t.co/7y0JAYw
