Hungry Grocery Shoppers Buy More Junk Food

May 18, 2013

Grocery shopping while hungry can lead to out of control snacking and an entire week’s worth of unhealthy eating according to new research from Cornell University.

The Cornell researchers followed 68 shoppers as they clicked through an online grocery site that offered a mix of healthy choices — including fruits, vegetables and lean meats — and unhealthy, high calorie snack foods like candy, chips and soda.

The shoppers who didn’t eat for four to five hours before filling their virtual food baskets bought the same number of items as the shoppers who snacked on crackers before clicking away. But the hungry shoppers selected more processed junk foods, 23 percent more on average. A follow up field test where researchers secretly followed shoppers who hadn’t eaten for several hours found much the same.

“You don’t buy more, but you do buy more of the wrong type of calories,” noted Brian Wansink, one of the study’s lead investigators and author of the new book, Slim By Design. “You buy things like cereal, snacks, chips, candy and other convenience foods that require no preparation and that you can eat right away.”

Previous research demonstrated that fasting for up to 18 hours can drive shoppers to make less diet-friendly choices and spend more cash overall. But this is the first study to show you don’t have to be terribly hungry for your judgment to be affected.

Even just a few hours without eating is enough to send you in search of a quick fix to satisfy hunger. And, as Wansink noted, this is often the state shoppers find themselves in as they rush to the market after a long day of work.

Unfortunately, the effect goes well beyond buying a candy bar to tide you over on the drive home, Wansink said. Shoppers who impulsively purchase ready-to-eat, low nutrition foods set themselves up for repeated diet disasters because they fill their pantries with junk instead of healthier fare.

“It ends up cursing the rest of your week because you bought way too much of the convenience foods and not enough of the good stuff. So now there is less healthy food for you to choose from at home.”

Americans seem to be snacking more than ever. On average, Americans enjoy 2.3 snacks per day according to the latest poll by the Hartman Group. Nearly 30 percent of people said they snack impulsively while another 17 percent reach for a snack when they don’t feel like cooking. Almost 60 percent of respondents said choosing a healthy snack is important to them, yet the two most popular snacks choices are chips and soda.

Wansink said the obvious moral here is don’t shop hungry.

“It helps to plan your visit to the supermarket and if you’re hungry, eat an apple before you go,” he said.

“I’ll Have What She’s Having” — Annual Food Porn List Revealed

January 25, 2013
When Food is Love

When Food is Love

A Cheesecake Factory pasta dish has more than 3,000 calories  (more than a day and a half of the recommended caloric intake for an average adult)!!!

It’s no surprise that this dish is at the top of this year’s Xtreme Eating list of the most unhealthy dishes at U.S. chain restaurants.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest, a consumer-focused nonprofit group that promotes healthier eating, compiles an annual list of “food porn” to alert consumers to menu items with eye-popping levels of calories, saturated fat, sugar and/or sodium.

“You’d think that the size of their profits depended on their increasing the size of your pants,” CSPI Executive Director Michael Jacobson said of the industry’s Xtreme Eating winners.

CSPI for years has used the “awards” to raise awareness and drum up support for calorie disclosure on restaurant menus – something that larger chains soon will be required to do under the U.S. health reform law.

The Cheesecake Factory’s Bistro Shrimp Pasta, made with a butter and cream sauce and topped with battered, fried shrimp, has 3,120 calories and 89 grams of saturated fat and 1,090 milligrams of sodium, said CSPI, which said it confirmed nutritional data with companies on the list.

More than one-third of Americans are obese, and about 10 percent of the nation’s healthcare bill is tied to obesity-related diseases, such as Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and hypertension, according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.

The nation’s food and beverage industries are under increasing pressure from consumer, health and parents’ groups to offer more healthy alternatives.

Restaurant companies say it is their job to give consumers choices. Many, including Cheesecake Factory, have lower-calorie sections on their menus alongside the indulgent offerings.

Cheesecake Factory is known for its ample portions and wide array of cheesecakes – many of which weigh in at around 1,000 calories per slice.

It makes regular showings on the Xtreme Eating list, but since August 2011 has promoted its “SkinnyLicious” menu of entrees with 590 or fewer calories, including salmon rolls and a pear and endive salad.

Jayne Hurley, CSPI’s senior nutritionist and an author of this year’s Xtreme Eating report, said such lower-calorie items should be recategorized as “normal” rather than “diet.”

“It’s the steady stream of high-calorie foods that sabotage your diet not just for the day, but for the entire week,” Hurley said.

Other Xtreme Eating winners for 2013 include:

- Johnny Rockets’ Bacon Cheddar Double Hamburger with 1,770 calories, 50 grams of saturated fat and 2,380 milligrams of sodium. For comparison, three Quarter Pounders with Cheese from McDonald’s have 1,570 calories.

- Cheesecake Factory’s Crispy Chicken Costoletta with 2,610 calories, 89 grams of saturated fat and 2,720 milligrams of sodium. CSPI said an entire 12-piece bucket of KFC Original Recipe fried chicken has about the same number of calories but less than half the saturated fat. Cheesecake Factory told Reuters that dish has 2,560 calories, 86 grams of saturated fat and 2,767 milligrams of sodium.

- Smoothie King’s Peanut Power Plus Grape Smoothie, which includes peanut butter, banana, sugar and grape juice. A 40-ounce, large size of that drink has 1,460 calories and 22 teaspoons of added sugar plus 29 teaspoons of naturally occurring sugar.

The U.S. government’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends that women consume no more than six teaspoons of added sugars per day and that men consume no more than nine.

- Chocolate Zuccotto Cake from Maggiano’s Little Italy. One slice weighs nearly one pound and has 1,820 calories, 62 grams of saturated fat and 26 teaspoons of added sugar – or 15 Hostess Ho Hos, CSPI said.

Look How Much Sugar is in Ketchup!

January 23, 2013
I Spy Sugar in Ketchup

I Spy Sugar in Ketchup

‘Eye-opening’ is the only I way I can describe my reaction to finding out how much sugar there is in the least likely places – like Hunt’s Ketchup! One thing’s for certain, sugar is one of those ingredients that shows up where you least expect it like ketchup. (See more foods on my ‘I Spy Sugar’ series on Pinterest)

Especially when you think that President Ronald Reagan actually wanted us to believe that ketchup is a vegetable! I’m referring to the proposed United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) regulations, early in the presidency of Ronald Reagan, that intended to provide more flexibility in meal planning to local school lunch administrators. While ketchup was not mentioned in the original regulations, pickle relish was used as an example of an item that could count as a vegetable. (I promise to check the sugar content in pickle relish next week.)

Food manufacturers like to say that they add sugar to ketchup to even out the acidic taste. But the 58 teaspoons found in a 35 oz. bottle of Hunt’s Ketchup seems a bit excessive to me.  Ketchup may be the condiment of choice for a million fast-food outlets and a staple sauce in homes around the world, but there’s more to it than meets the eye.

The excessive amount of sugar hidden in a bottle of  Ketchup just might be one of the reasons you’re having trouble managing your weight or blood sugars.

Before a ‘Divabetic’ buys items that contain ketchup (like barbeque sauce or pork and beans) they  should look at the nutrition label to see how high the sugar content is. Also check other tomato based products like spaghetti sauce.

Michelle Obama Says “Let’s Mac” Not “Let’s Move!”

December 22, 2012

Mac-N-CheeseFirst Lady Mrs. Michelle Obama has dubbed herself “hostess in chief” taking on the ever-so-important duties of welcoming guests and managing the seasonal merriment. But there’s one more task on the Yuletide to-do list that must be handled with care: the menu.

So what will be on the first family’s presidential plates this year? FLOTUS opened up to “Today” show correspondent Jenna Bush Hager about the decadent dinner the Obamas will be having while they celebrate Christmas in Hawaii, admitting her temporary plans to throw the Let’s Move! campaign to the wind.

“There’s turkey, there’s string beans and stuffing, a little mac and cheese,” Mrs. Obama said about the menu. “This is the time when I throw ‘Let’s Move’ out the window for a moment, and get that mac and cheese. Everybody deserves their mac and cheese.”

We couldn’t agree more! A delicious Christmas dinner is certainly for both the naughty and nice.

Mac and cheese isn’t the only dish deterring from the usual healthy eating habits. According to Senior Policy Advisor for Healthy Food Initiatives Sam Kass, who will be joining the first family in Hawaii, pie will be served as the grand finale to the feast.

Go Ahead, Smash Your Food This Thanksgiving!

November 25, 2012

DivabeticGetting kids to understand the connection between their diet, nutrition, and health at an early age can help them establish healthy habits for life, and this free iOS app just might be cool enough to motivate them to learn more about the foods they choose.

Smash Your Food is a free iPhone and iPad app from Food N’ Me that aims to help children learn about the amounts of salt, oil, and sugar in the “most commonly abused” foods. And it isn’t presenting it to them in a totally boring manner, because the app works not by instructing directly, but by letting the kids try to guess the amounts, and then showing them in a very graphic manner just what that looks like:

Watch your kids SMASH a burger, CRUSH a milkshake, DEMOLISH a soda and POUND a pizza! Smash Your Food invites players to test their knowledge of the sugar, fat and oil content in commonly abused foods, then watch it get smashed – literally!

Choose from a variety of fridges featuring Messy Breakfast, Mushy Mess or complete the holiday themed fridge to watch a carved pumpkin get squished. As players correctly guess the content in each item, new achievements are completed and tokens in the form of golden carrots are earned. With the right amount of carrots, players can then unlock additional fridges and become a legendary smasher. Along the way, learn valuable tips about alternate food choices and accept challenges to have a healthier lifestyle. Smash Your Food proves that playing with your food is not only fun but educational as well!

The Easiest Way To Avoid Halloween Cravings

October 31, 2012

Halloween cravings may be uniquely influenced by seasonal changes. Studies show that as days get shorter, and we are exposed to less sunshine, serotonin activity may be affected. Since eating carbohydrates enhances serotonin synthesis, carbohydrate consumption may be a behavioral way to increase serotonin levels and improve our mood. Other researchers say that sweet cravings are mainly determined by culture or by psychological and behavioral factors, rather than by physiology. Chances are that a combination of factors is responsible.

Availability and proximity probably trump all of the other reasons why we crave and overeat sweets. When tasty foods are around, we simply eat more of them. That’s why Halloween is such a trap. Halloween candy is novel; it only comes around once a year. It comes in small pieces, so you fool yourself into thinking you’re not eating as much. You put it in bowls around the house and eat it mindlessly.

If you have a strong desire for sweets, it may be a sign that you’re depressed, anxious or stressed. But the good news is that you don’t have to indulge in sweets to raise your serotonin levels or to feel good. Exercising, stress management, and spending time with loved ones are activities that will also help reduce depression, anxiety and stress. It’s also important to understand the core of your emotional problems and for that, you may need to seek help from a professional.

Experts agree that if you do find you overeat then you should give yourself a break. Don’t dwell on the negative, and get over it! Analyze objectively what you can do differently next time.

McDonald’s Debuts New Sandwich

October 19, 2012

Divabetic FallMcDonald’s debuts the Cheddar Bacon Onion Sandwich (CBO) in stores nationwide. It is available on a burger or grilled chicken. The sandwich consists of two new premium toppings of white cheddar and grilled onions, combined with McDonald’s existing hickory-smoked bacon. It is topped with a mustard sauce.

While the CBO is a new item, it’s actually been around in very similar forms such as the Clubhouse Angus with smoky dijon and the English Pub burger.

McDonald’s focus on white cheddar is further proof that there might be an increased focus on the cheese as a premium ingredient in fast food restaurants. Earlier this week, Burger Business reported on white cheddar’s popularity as a specialty burger topping based on rumors about a not-yet-released Burger King Whopper with white cheddar.

Flamin’ Hot Cheetos Are Banned From Public Schools

October 18, 2012

Divabetic FallFlamin’ Hot Cheetos are a wildly popular snack that literally leaves its indulgers red-handed.

And now several schools in California, New Mexico and Illinois have banned the high-fat, high-salt and possibly addictive treat.

Some schools in Pasadena, Calif. have even said that if a parent packs the snack in their child’s lunch, the spicy Cheetos will still be confiscated, KTLA reports.

The main reason cited by these schools for the ban is a lack of nutritional value. One snack-size bag contains 26 grams of fat and a quarter of the amount of sodium recommended for an entire day.

And new research suggests that “hyperpalatable foods”–salty, fatty or sweet foods–can trigger brain responses similar to those created seen in individuals addicted to drugs or alcohol, the Chicago Tribune reports.

“Eight out of 10 kids bring them to school,” Lake View High School senior Abigail Hernandez told the paper. “And I used to be one of them in middle school. I ate them every day, even for breakfast, and I got really big. There were days when, if my mother didn’t buy them for me, I would get so mad. … It took me three months to quit.”

The craze is also evident on the web as well, where parents have uploaded videos of the first time their child tries Flamin’ Hot Cheetos and kids have uploaded videos of contests of who can eat the most of the snack.

A middle school teacher in New Mexico recently sent a letter to parents asking them to leave the red-hot snack at home. In addition to the health concern, she wrote that students were leaving red fingerprints and messes for janitors, that students were replacing lunch with the spicy chips and that students were sharing more germs by sharing the Cheetos with each other.

Frito-Lay, the manufacturer of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, responded that it is “committed to responsible and ethical marketing practices, which includes not marketing our products to children ages 12 and under,” CBS reports.

Regardless of marketing practices, it’s clear that younger-than-12-year-olds are definitely getting the red hot fever. The Huffington Post  |  By

Why Kids Face Greater Risk For Strokes

October 12, 2012

Divabetic FallStrokes are hitting at a younger age, according to a new study published in the journal Neurology.

Researchers from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine found that the average age at which a person experiences a stroke fell to 69.2 in 2005, from 71.2 in 1993/1994.

“The reasons for this trend could be a rise in risk factors such as diabetes, obesity and high cholesterol,” study researcher Dr. Brett Kissela, M.D., said in a statement. “Other factors, such as improved diagnosis through the increased use of MRI imaging may also be contributing. Regardless, the rising trend found in our study is of great concern for public health because strokes in younger people translate to greater lifetime disability.”

The study included 1.3 million people who lived in the greater Cincinnati and northern Kentucky region during 1993/1994, 1999 and 2005.

Researchers found that the number of people younger than 55 who experienced their first stroke during that time period increased to 19 percent in 2005, from 13 percent in 1993/1994.

Plus, the stroke rate among 20-to-54-year-olds increased between the beginning and end of the study; among Caucasians, strokes rose to 48 for every 100,000 people in 2005, compared with 26 strokes for every 100,000 people in 1993/1994. For African-Americans, strokes increased to 128 for every 100,000 people in 2005, compared with 83 strokes for every 100,000 people in 1993/1994.

“Among the young, the increase in incidence suggests an unknown and potentially daunting future trajectory,” wrote Drs. Sally Sultan, M.D., and Mitchell S.V. Elkind, M.D., in an accompanying editorial. “Replication of these findings in other U.S. populations and internationally is crucial, and future studies will need to account for potential temporal trends in diagnostic testing while also teasing out causative factors.”

The findings follow a recent study in the journal Annals of Neurology, showing that hospitalizations for ischemic stroke have gone up by 37 percent from 1995 to 2008 among people between ages 15 and 44.

20 Minutes Of Exercise Can Change Your Child’s Life!

October 1, 2012

Divabetic FallA new study reports that just 20 minutes of daily physical activity is enough to be the difference between the onset of diabetes or dodging that bullet in at-risk children.

The study, reported in JAMA, randomly assigned over 200 overweight or obese grade school students to 20 or 40 minutes of supervised aerobic activity five days a week, or to a control group in which habitual activity (or lack thereof) was maintained, for a period of 13 weeks. The primary study outcome was insulin sensitivity, a potent marker of Type 2 diabetes risk; and secondary measures included fitness, and fatness.

Both doses of physical activity significantly improved insulin sensitivity, suggesting diabetes prevention over time. The 40-minute dose exerted a greater effect, but 20 minutes a day was clearly enough to matter.

The higher dose of activity was more effective than the lower at reducing weight and body fat, but both were significantly better than control. And in the case of fitness, measured formally with peak oxygen consumption, both doses were comparably effective, and both much better than control, i.e., doing just about nothing.

So while more exercise is better, some — and a rather small “sum,” at that — can do a remarkable amount of good. If we know — and it seems we do — that fitting 20 minutes of activity in during every school day can be enough to prevent diabetes in a large and growing percentage of our kids, it’s hard to believe we would fail to act on that knowledge.

That much more so when we consider that a daily dose of exercise is likely to enhance academic performance, rather than interfere with it. “Sound mind, sound body” should sound familiar, because it’s the kind of sensible advice our grandparents gave us. Science now points in the same direction, it just took longer to get there.
