Are You Feeding Your Kids Too Much?

September 10, 2012

Divabetic SummerIf your child’s weight is increasing while his/her height stays the same, it’s a sign he or she’s consuming more than they need to.

“A lot of parents don’t notice if their child gains a few pounds-it’s the whole ‘love is blind’ thing. But they will pick up on pants or shirts that suddenly look snug,” notes American Dietetic Association spokesperson Bonnie Taub-Dix, R.D.

What do you do when your kids are cranky? Do you hand over a snack when your kids are upset, stressed or fatigued?. What they may really need is just a hug, some quiet time, or something to drink instead (thirst is often confused for hunger-ditto tiredness). They might also just be bored. Try address the underlying problem before handing over a snack pack, with distraction or just a little one-on-one time.

Is the amount on their plates is close to the amount you have on yours? Kids don’t need adult-sized portions. A good serving size is about the size of the palm of your hand, and that applies to kids too. For snacks, a good, easy-to-remember gauge of a serving is what you can grab with your hand.

More Kids Need Cholesterol Tests Before Puberty

August 13, 2012

Divabetic SummerMore children should be screened for high cholesterol before puberty, beyond those with a family history of problems, according to wide-ranging new guidelines expected from government-appointed experts who are trying to prevent heart disease later in life.

Any call for wider screening is likely to raise concern about overdiagnosing a condition that may not cause problems for decades, if ever. Yet studies suggest that half of children with high cholesterol will also have it as adults, and it’s one of the best-known causes of clogged arteries that can lead to heart attacks.

Until now, major medical groups such as the American Academy of Pediatrics have advised screening only children with a family history of early heart disease or high cholesterol and those who are obese or have diabetes or high blood pressure.

About a third of U.S. children and teens are obese or overweight. And government studies estimate that about 10 to 13 percent of children and teens have high cholesterol – defined as a score above 200.

The broader context for these guidelines is stepped-up efforts around the globe to target children and prevent problems later in life.

Last summer, the British government gave its first exercise advice for children under 5, urging some daily activity even for babies too young to walk. And the U.S. Institute of Medicine also recently gave diet and exercise advice for preschoolers.
