How Many Calories Can You Burn Playing Croquet?

May 28, 2012

DivabeticWe all know how many calories there are to gain at tMemorial Day barbecues, cookouts and cocktail parties, but how many calories can  you burn off at your celebration?

Leisurely lawn games such as ‘croquet’ are the “slow and steady” side of fitness. Sure, you’re not going to get your cross-train on with any activity that allows you to hold a gin drink in one hand. But a few hours out on the lawn certainly beats the same time spent parked on a couch.

Every little bit counts! Using a mallet to hit a wooden ball around your neighbor’s lawn, croquet players can burn 170 calories per hour.

Diva TalkRadio: Dancing With Stars

No time to exercise? Stuck in a traffic jam with a long journey ahead of you?

There’s always a way to squeeze in a little exercise no matter where you are.  Just make sure if you are driving that you only do these exercises when you have stopped or when it is absolutely safe to do them…

Butt Boogie Blasters: You can tone the gluteal muscles almost anywhere by squeezing together your buttock muscles for 10 seconds and then releasing. Repeat 10 times.

Stomach Salsa Slimmers: Flatten your stomach by breathing out and pulling your stomach in towards your back as far as possible. Hold for six seconds and release. Repeat 10 times

Thigh Tango Tighteners: Squeeze your thighs together as hard as you can. Hold for 10 seconds and release. Repeat 10 times. If this is too easy you can increase the toning effect by squeezing something like a balled up sweater between your legs. Repeat 10 times.

Shoulder Samba Stretches: Keeping your arms and shoulders relaxed and holding lightly onto the steering wheel, lower your shoulders and pull back as far as you can moving your shoulder blades together. Hold for 10 seconds. Repeat 10 times.

Remember, to fasten your seat belt before attempting any ballroom in the car. Learn the “golden” ways to disco in the driver’s seat. Divabetic's Step-tember Fitness Ideas

Are you bored with your fitness routine like me? I can’t help it. Lately,  I think about this every time I go to the gym and sleepwalk my way through my cardio circuit: the treadmill, elliptical machine, and stationary bike. I’m not saying that exercise machines are bad but sometimes you need to shake it up at bit.

Well, the newest trend in fitness is: FlyBarre classes seems to be the solution for “BORED … but still going for the burn” minded people like me. What is it? A combination of yoga, dance, circuit training, Pilates and strength training. Effective, engaging, and fun, they come in almost as many styles as yoga pants. So when Flywheel Sports, the spinning studio, created its own signature barre offering, they wanted to make absolutely sure it wasn’t an also-ran.

The result called FlyBarre is “a barre class for athletes,” says its creator, Kate Bohner, a one-time co-captain of the University of Pennsylvania Women’s Lacrosse team and a member of the World Cup team.

“The sculpting boot camp for spinners,” as Bohner calls it, is a 55-minute interval-based class that combines circuit training, yoga, Pilates, stretching, and strength building. A warm-up is followed by a fast-paced succession of intervals—lots and lots of ab exercises, upper body work, 15 minutes (!!) of glute work, and stretching to a cool soundtrack (of ’80s and ’90s music Duran Duran to Mary J. Blige when I was there). Yes, it’s low-impact, but that doesn’t mean you won’t sweat.
