#1 Tip For Dads Raising Daughters

June 17, 2012

Divabetic DadsScience recently confirmed what all parents already know – paying attention to your kids matters. And dads need to be just as attentive and loving as moms if they want to grow healthy, well-adjusted adults. When it comes to fathers with daughters, there are unique challenges associated with this endeavor.

One of the most important tips for dads of daughters is:

Tell her she’s pretty, but tell her other good things about herself more.
It’s not that telling a girl she’s pretty is bad. It’s not. The point is that it shouldn’t be the only kind of compliment she gets, so she doesn’t feel that only her appearance matters. Compliment her intelligence, her resourcefulness, her imagination, her hard work, and her strength. Don’t pretend that her looks will never matter, but teach her not to judge herself or let herself be judged only on looks.

Most Portions at Restaurants Exceed Nutrition Recommendations

May 24, 2012

Diva TalkRadioA whopping 96 percent of America’s chain restaurant entrees fell outside the range of the USDA’s recommendations for fat, saturated fat and sodium per meal, according to a new analysis from the RAND corporation, published in the journal Public Health Nutrition.

“If you’re eating out tonight, your chances of finding an entree that’s truly healthy are painfully low,” lead researcher Helen Wu, assistant policy analyst at RAND, told USA Today.

Wu and her team evaluated 28,433 regular menu items and 1,833 children’s menus at 245 restaurants around the country between February and May 2010. They looked at the USDA recommendations for daily maximum intake in calories, fat, saturated fat and sodium and divided that by three to arrive at a government recommendation for a single meal. And while the majority of dishes fell below the USDA’s calorie limit for a meal (667 calories), they did not meet the requirements for fat, saturated fat and sodium (which, according to the government regulations, should not exceed 767 mg per meal).

“Many items may appear healthy based on calories, but actually can be very unhealthy when you consider other important nutrition criteria,” Wu told the Los Angeles Times.

Sodium, in particular, was problematic – according to the report, the average dinner entree packs a whopping 1,512 mg, more than the CDC’s recommended adequate intake for an entire day (and not too far from their recommended maximum intake of 2,300 mg). And while the average calorie total was a more reasonable 674, fat and saturated fat counts were well above limits at 32 g and 12 g, respectively.

And don’t think you’re doing your diet any favors by ordering an appetizer instead of a main dish — the researchers reported that those meal “starters” often had more calories, fat and sodium than any other item on the menu.

While fast food restaurants are often the most vilified chains, the truth is that family-style restaurants, like Red Lobster and Denny’sactually had “significantly more” calories, fat and sodium than their drive-thru counterparts.

“Restaurants that made nutrition information easily accessible on websites had significantly lower energy, fat and sodium contents across menu offerings than those providing information only upon request.”

More than 80 percent of us eat out at least once a week, so what chance to do we  really have of sticking to our diets when most menu entrees blow an entire day’s worth of recommended calorie, fat and/or sodium intake out of the water in a single sitting?

Alarming Cost Of Diabetes Rises Around The World

April 25, 2012

The number of people affected by diabetes worldwide is on the rise — and with it, the price tag for everything touched by the disease.

Estimates have put the numbers as high as 552 million people living iwth diabetes by 2030, and as is shown in the chart above, certain countries are facing a more difficult time with it than others. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)  includes the top five countries with diabetes: Mexico, United States, Portugal, Canada and Germany. The organization is starting to sound the alarm on the projected impact.

At the European Diabetes Leadership Forum in Copenhagen today, OECD Deputy General Yves Leterme stated,  ”Preventing and treating diabetes and its complications costs about €90 billion annually in Europe alone. With health budgets already under great pressure and national budgets severely strained, for the sake of our health and the health of our economies we must find ways to prevent and manage diabetes in a cost-effective manner.”

In the United States, the current direct and indirect costs of diabetes total $174 billion annually, with experts predicting a total of $3.4 trillion by the time the year 2020 rolls around. In Canada, the number is estimated to reach $16.9 billion annually by the end of the decade.

Apart from medication and treatment, the organization points to societal problems, like reduced employment opportunities and salaries for those affected — for example, obese people earn up to 18 percent less  than non-obese people. There’s also the issue of depression, for which people living with diabetes have found to be at higher risk.
