Luther Vandross Inspires Diabetes Movement: Divabetic

September 9, 2012

Divabetic SummerDivabetic was inspired by the late music legend, Luther Vandross and created in 2005 by Max ‘Mr. Divabetic’ Szadek, who, as Vandross’ assistant of 14 years, witnessed his boss, mentor, and friend struggle in silence and solitude with the diabetes and its related complications. Since its inception, Divabetic has presented outreach programs in 20 major U.S. cities, reaching hundreds of thousands of women, their families and health care professionals.

Through the years, Divabetic has done an outstanding job of ‘passing the boa’ to raise awareness of diabetes in a fun, new way. Mr. Divabetic and his team have presented a dazzling array of programming to empower, encourage and inspire the divas and their families to stay healthy and upbeat about their daily self-care across the country.

Divabetic gained national and international attention with the success of its Divabetic – Makeover Your Diabetes outreach tour, presented in nine major US cities (New York, NY, Washington DC, Los Angeles, CA, Atlanta, GA, New Orleans, LA, Cleveland, OH, Philadelphia, PA, Miami, FL, Detroit, MI). Divabetic worked with teams of local certified diabetes educators in each city and reached thousands of women across the country. The success of the tour now serves as a content platform for many of Divabetic’s live and online programs. Additionally, Divabetic has worked with local healthcare centers to present an upbeat and interactive form of wellness outreach programming in Hagerstown, MD, Nashville, TN, Stamford, CT, Memphis, TN, Knoxville, TN and Tampa, FL.

This year, Mr. Divabetic plans to travel to Washington, DC, Los Angeles, CA, Philadelphia, PA, New York, NY San Diego, CA, Pittsburgh, PA, Raleigh, NC and Austin, TX in support of Divabetic’s dazzling brand of diabetes health and wellness outreach.

The Secret to Beautiful Blood Sugars

May 10, 2012

#beautifulbloodsugarsKeeping you’re cool while managing a random blood sugar low is all about attitude. With some styling finesse you can cutdown on the stress if you think like a diva!

Our beautiful blood sugar secret starts with the Rule of 15:  If  your blood sugar gets too low, eat 15 grams   of a carbohydrate-rich food (3 – 4 glucose tablets), wait 15 minutes, and test your blood sugar again. If it is still below 70, take another 15 grams of carbohydrates, wait another 15 minutes, and retest.

Its important not to overdo treatment because this could start a cycle of blood sugar levels rising and crashing. ‘Just waiting’ can be excruciating so fill the time before rechecking with a ‘glam more, fear less’ type distraction: A BLOW OUT.

Grab your hair dryer, some styling gel and a picture of your favorite celebrity for inspiration to learn to become the master of your own blow out.

You want to either air- or towel-dry your hair slightly before applying styling products — otherwise they’ll slip right off.

Divide and clip your hair into 3 sections — top, middle and nape. If you wear bangs, leave them loose.

Grab a great hair dryer. TotalBeauty.com readers strongly recommend  CHI TURBO CERAMIC IONIC HAIR DRYER, $134.95. “It cuts the normal drying time in half and your hair is so shiny and healthy looking after that you don’t really even need a flat iron!” one reader says.

Dry your bangs into place first to set them so they aren’t harder to tame at the end. Then put the nozzle on your dryer and, beginning with the nape section, wrap a 2- to 4-inch section of hair around the brush and pull as taut as you can. Ensure that your dryer nozzle is pointing down the hair shaft from roots to ends.

When each section is completely dry, use the “cool shot” to finish it.

When all of your hair is dry, finish with a misting of shine spray or rub a pea-sized drop of shine serum in your palms and distribute evenly from mid-shaft to ends — staying clear of roots.

The good news is you can sit in a chair while blow drying to make it easier on the arms. But if you’re feeling too drained to indulge yourself in a home beauty treatment  ask your sister, best friend or mom to become your at-home beauty consultant.

A little mirror time can go a long way to helping you stay on top of your self-care. Make sure and talk to your health care team if you are at risk for hypoglycemia and follow their advice for treatment, which will be tailored to your own situation.#beautifulbloodsugars

Alec Baldwin Among 79 Million Americans with Pre-Diabetes

February 3, 2012

Divabetic: Alec Baldwin's Before & After

A diagnosis of last pre-diabetes May gave award-winning actor Alec Baldwin the motivation to trim 30 pounds from a physique that, along with chiseled features, once earned him a place  among People magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful People.

A newly energized Baldwin, 53, revealed the health scare that lay behind his sleeker appearance during last Sunday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles, where he was named best actor in a comedy series for his work in the hit show “30 Rock.”

Alec Baldwin said that he dropped the weight in just four months by giving up sugar and bumping up his activity with Pilates and spinning, but “not as much yoga as I’d like.”

“When we’re shooting and I can’t work out, I just have to eat less,” he said. “So I’m very conscious of that. But sugar was the real killer for me. That was the problem.”

Pre-diabetes places Baldwin among an estimated 79 million Americans with elevated blood sugar levels that can put them at risk of chronic, life-threatening Type 2 diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association.  Diabetes specialists recognize pre-diabetes as a distinct entity, although “many, many primary care doctors don’t recognize it or treat it” because the lifestyle interventions that can delay or prevent it are “hard to ‘prescribe,’” said  Dr. Anne Peters, director of the clinical diabetes programs at the University of Southern California.

“Losing 7 percent to 10 percent of one’s body weight with maintenance of that weight reduces the risk by half or even more,” she said.
