Mother Your Diabetes: Plate Your Snacks

May 23, 2013
Mother Your Diabetes

Mother Your Diabetes

Mama Rose Marie’s Mother Your Diabetes tip featured on May’s Diabetes Roundtable is to PLATE YOUR SNACKS.

“When you eat straight out of the bag and you’re guaranteed to eat more, whether it’s chips, pretzels, or cookies,” says Mama Rose Marie. “To stop yourself from eating the entire bag I suggest that you put a small portion on a plate, seal up the bag and put it away, then sit down and enjoy your snack. The danger of snacks is that they can become more like extra meals if you go overboard using a plate is one way to stop yourself from overeating.”

Mother-to-be, Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge,  is inspiring May’s Diabetes Roundtable podcast. Kate Middleton has impressed the world with her modest fashions, charitable efforts and down to earth persona.  She was recently named one of TIME magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in the World and Vanity Fair’s Best Dressed Pregnant Lady. Her fairy tale romance is a good, old-fashioned love story.  Prince finds a common girl. Prince falls in love. They get married and live happily ever after. But how would she fair if she was living with diabetes?

Mr. Divabetic adds a ‘divabetic’ twist to Kate Middleton’s palace life, pregnancy and interests to  infuse our Hot Topic discussion, Digital Diva Reviews and Diabetes Numerology Game segments.  Joining Mr. Divabetic for this one hour whirlwind of wellness are: Divabetic Image & Style Advisor, Catherine Schuller, Patricia Addie Gentle RN, CDE,  Kathy Gold RN, CDE, Stephanie Garber PharmD, CDE, Mama Rose Marie, Digital Divas, Molly Lepeska from 100Campaign and Liz Wolff, the owner of CURE Thrift Shop who is living with type 1 diabetes.

Kelly Osbourne’s Diet Secrets

April 24, 2013

kelly-osbourne-seizure-details-2(1)__oPt“Once I learned how to work out right and eat right, it’s one of those things that you just have to commit to a life change rather than being on a diet. Because a diet doesn’t work. You lose weight and you stop it and it will all come back. So you just have to take baby steps, commit to something and stay true to it,” said Fashion Police star, Kelly Osbourne.

The 28-year-old, who recently referred to herself as a “former fat person,” chatted with HuffPost Celebrity about her 70 pound weight loss program.

So, how does she maintain her incredible shape?

“And everything has to be in moderation and to find that place is easier said than done. It really is,” she continued. “Everyone’s like, ‘Oh it’s all about moderation!’ I’m like, well what are you going to do with a plate of french fries in front of you, moderate? No. You’re going to eat every single one of them!”

Speaking of french fries, Osbourne says she indulges in whatever “cheat meals” she wants, admitting that she never feels guilty about satisfying a craving.

“I always cheat,” she laughed, adding, “Pizza, I have to say …”

Osbourne recently confessed to Self magazine that she even finds herself chowing down on pizza in the morning. “I eat my fattiest meal in the a.m,” she revealed in the May issue. “If I’m craving pizza, I’ll have it for breakfast, salad for lunch, and oatmeal for dinner.”

Why Can’t Americans Lose Weight?

April 12, 2013
Fat Letters

Fat Letters

American children and adults are eating fewer calories, yet obesity rates haven’t improved, according to a series of recent reports from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That means it’s going to take more than counting calories for the country to slim down.

Americans may simply be eating the wrong types of calories. It’s important to focus on where your calories are coming from, and fill your diet with minimally processed plant-based foods as much as possible. Cutting out soda and other sugar-sweetened drinks can also make a big difference.

“I would recommend that people follow dietary guidelines, which means eating a healthy diet,” said Bethene Ervin, PhD, a nutritional epidemiologist with the National Center for Health Statistics at the CDC. “This includes limiting fat intake and consuming lots of fruits and vegetables. That would be the best way to beat obesity.”

Remember that it’s not a matter of giving up your favorite foods. It’s about eating wisely. When it comes to a healthy diet, make sure that every calorie counts.

Can’t Eat Just One? Now There’s Help

March 1, 2013
High Voltage

High Voltage

Can’t eat just one?

There’s a reason for that. New science shows that when we overload on sugar our brain receptors change, making it hard to regulate how much we eat. Worse. Scientists have also proven what the marketers (and everyone who has found themselves staring mournfully into the bottom of a once-full ice cream carton) have known all along—sugar is addictive. It lights up the same reward receptors and triggers the same cascade of feel-good brain chemicals like serotonin and dopamine as cocaine. Enough! It’s time to take control of your weight, your health, and your happiness with a program proven to help you beat your cravings and lose weight.

My good friend,  Energy Up! founder, High Voltage along with Reader’s Digest  is writing a new book about her amazing Sugar Savvy solution to help you lose weight and live a healthier way of life.

If you’re sick and tired of being sick and tired, ready to take action and prepared to pursue happiness, open to recognizing your trigger foods and willing to let go of excuses and negative energy please take advantage of this exciting weight loss program.

If you’re interested, please answer the questions below and send a full body photo to sugarsavvy@rd.com by March 8.

Thank you for your interest!

Healthy Meals Mean Big Business for Restaurant Chains

February 10, 2013
Dining Out With A Dietititan

Dining Out With A Dietititan

Good news for Diabetes Roundtable podcast’s ‘Dining Out With A Dietitian’ fans! Healthy meals are becoming very popular at major chain restaurants. A team of  researchers examined sales figures from 21 major chain restaurants, some of which had recently introduced more lower-calorie options to their menu, and some of which had cut such items. They discovered that the chains that had added more low-cal items had performed strikingly better than the ones that hadn’t. Between 2006 and 2011, visits went up 10.9 percent at the chains that had beefed up their healthy offerings, while they dropped by 14.7 percent at the restaurants that had decreased their low-cal offerings.

Tune in to February’s upcoming free Diabetes Roundtable “LIVE ON THE RED CARPET SPECIAL” podcast is scheduled for Tuesday, February 12, 2013, 6 – 7 PM, EST.

Paula Deen’s Weight Loss is A Family Affair

January 26, 2013
Paula Deen is a "Divabetic"

Paula Deen is a “Divabetic”

Newly anointed “Divabetic” Paula Deen is the first one to admit: “When I first found out I was diabetic, I had no solutions. I couldn’t even help myself, much less somebody else.”

Do you feel the same way? If so, tune in to Divabetic’s free monthly diabetes educational podcast, Diabetes Roundtable to help you journey from “diagnosis to DIVA! YOU can do it.

In this week’s issue, the 66-year-old Food Network star invited PEOPLE into her Savannah home to share how her family members adopted different weight loss strategies and lost an astounding 178 lbs. total.

By figuring out a diet plan that works for their particular schedule and lifestyle, Deen’s husband Michael Groover shed 60 lbs., her oldest son Jamie got rid of an excess 45 lbs., and her youngest son Bobby maintained his 33-lb. loss. But no one sacrificed their love of Southern food. Instead they learned to stick to Deen’s new mantra. “Moderation, moderation, moderation,” says Deen, whose new cookbook The New Testament due out this fall will include her go-to recipes and tips. “I love feeding people but now I also want to help people eat right.”

Of course, a few small changes to her cooking repertoire can’t hurt, either. Deen has reportedly swapped in Greek yogurt for creaminess in some of her recipes, HuffPost Food reported earlier this month.

Watch News Yorkers try to identify the healthiest treat from three Serve, Taste or Trash! Food Game choices bought at a convenience store. You might be surprised by the results.

Insulin Sensitivity Improves on Mediterranean Diet

January 4, 2013

Mediterranean-Diet“A diet higher in unsaturated fats, akin to the standard Mediterranean diet, is clinically meaningful and relevant as a means to reduce risk factors for cardiovascular disease in generally healthy adults…. We believe that our findings strengthen the case for the partial replacement of carbohydrates with unsaturated fats as means for diet-based prevention of cardiovascular disease,” said  Dr. Meghana D. Gadgil, MD, MPH, from the Department of Medicine, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Gadgil and  her colleagues evaluated data from the randomized controlled crossover Optimal Macronutrient Intake Trial to Prevent Heart Disease (OmniHeart), which investigated the effect of 3 healthful diets of differing macronutrient composition on blood pressure and lipids, with weight held constant.

Dr. Gadgil stated that, because weight loss has consistently been shown to improve insulin sensitivity, an important aspect of this study was that weight was kept constant. “It is often weight changes during a study of dietary composition that can dictate effects on parameters of cardiometabolic disease, and our study sought to isolate the effects of macronutrients themselves.”

“It is likely that the choice of macronutrient to prevent insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes is less important than overall weight loss in the obese, whereas partial replacement of carbohydrates by unsaturated fat intake can mitigate risk in those of normal weight,” Dr. Gadgil and colleagues write.

Professor Thomas Sanders, PhD, DSc, head of the Diabetes & Nutritional Sciences Division and professor of Nutrition & Dietetics, School of Medicine, King’s College London, United Kingdom, who coauthored a study that produced conflicting results, found fault with the data.

“The study is in fact a retrospective analysis based on the original OmniHeart trial, which was not designed to test the issue whether insulin sensitivity was affected…. The findings should be regarded with caution because adjustment has not been made for multiple outcomes,” Dr. Sanders added. Diabetes Care. Published online December 5, 2012. Abstract

Jessica Simpson Shows Off 50 Pound Weight Loss

December 21, 2012

Jessica Simpson

Jessica Simpson

Jessica Simpson‘s new Weight Watchers ads are slated to begin airing Dec. 25. She’s reportedly lost about 50 pounds since daughter Maxwell Drew was born in May. Some of the weight loss was apparent when she and sister Ashlee toured last month, promoting the Jessica Simpson Collection at department stores including Macy’s and Dillard’s

hortly after becoming a mom, Simpson, 32, admitted that she felt self-conscious about her post-baby body – but said she was ready to get back into shape.

“I think anybody who’s gone through a pregnancy, after they have the baby, it’s like, ‘I need to do something about this!’ ” she told PEOPLE in May. “For me, I really want to do something that is a lifestyle, because in the past I’ve been known to yo-yo diet.”

So, when Weight Watchers asked her to be their new spokesperson, the fashion mogul eagerly said yes, and signed her friends up for the program, too.

“Weight Watchers changed my relationship with food, and I feel so much more prepared to make the right choices,” she says. “It feels pretty incredible.”

Diet Pepsi Announces Big Change

December 17, 2012
New Formula

New Formula

Diet Pepsi is quietly changing its sweetener ahead of a major rebranding of the soft drink set for next month.

The change comes as PepsiCo Inc. looks to reinvigorate its namesake brands after losing market share to Coca-Cola Co. in recent years.

Cans of Diet Pepsi around the country now list a mix of two artificial sweeteners, a pairing that is commonly found in newer diet sodas. Previously, Diet Pepsi used only aspartame, which is sensitive to heat and breaks down more easily.

PepsiCo spokeswoman Andrea Canabal said that Diet Pepsi using the new sweetener mix started hitting shelves in early December. She said the new mix will be more widely available in the coming weeks.

“It’s not like a light switch. It’ll start appearing as shelf space clears,” she said. In January, Canabal said the company is planning a major ad campaign that will include a new logo with a heart and the theme “Love Every Sip.”

Diet Pepsi remains the No. 7 carbonated soft drink with 4.9 percent of the market, according to Beverage Digest. That’s down from 5.3 percent in 2000. Meanwhile, Diet Coke’s share has increased in that time from 8.7 percent to 9.6 percent. Diet Coke, which still only uses aspartame, overtook regular Pepsi to become the No. 2 soda brand in 2010.

What’s On Your Plate?

December 2, 2012
Diabetes Plate Poetry

Diabetes Plate Poetry

Divabetic’s Diabetes Plate Poetry Project asks people living with diabetes “what’s on your plate?” The goal is to get people to describe the emotional experience of living with diabetes. Many of us reach for food to help us  deal with stress, anger, hurt and resentment so it makes sense to use food as a way catalyst to being a conversation about diabetes and emotions.

An important component of diabetes self-management, but often overlooked, is the topic of emotional well being. People living with diabetes face numerous challenges in managing their disease on a day- to- day basis.  Divabetic wants to encourage these individuals to stay positive and healthy in their self-management. Our mission to glamorize good health combines fitness, nutrition, style and positive energy. This video aims to assess the emotions associated with managing diabetes and the underlying reasons attributed to those emotions.
Divabetic presents free monthly  meetings, Divabetic Club Days,  at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA with the support of the American Diabetes Association.
