In celebration of National Diabetes Awareness Month, Divabetic’s kicking to the curb all the common myths associated with diabetes. Of course, were going to do it with style! Fleetwood Mac’s song ”Little Lies” helps us to dispel DIABETES MYTH #10:People living with diabetes must eat a special diet.
FACT: No, pizza lovers aren’t destined to develop diabetes. The disease is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic and lifestyle factors. And the high level of sugar in someone’s bloodstream is not the same thing as the refined stuff you buy in bags from the supermarket. That said, being overweight can increase the risk for developing type 2 diabetes, and eating a lot of sugar can pack on the pounds. If your family has a history of diabetes, eating healthfully and exercising regularly is recommended to keep everyone’s weight in check. This is why our popular monthly podcast, Diva TalkRadio, features two segments on food to help you make better choices. Our ‘Dining Out With A Dietitian’ focuses on mastering the menu at your favorite restaurant and ‘Food Aisle Face-Off’ aims to help you navigate the grocery store in a healthier way.

In celebration of National Diabetes Awareness Month, Divabetic’s kicking to the curb all the common myths associated with diabetes. Of course, were going to do it with style! Marvin Gaye’s motown hit song ”I Heard It Through The Grapevine” helps us to dispel DIABETES MYTH #4:Only people with diabetes need insulin.
FACT: Not true. Everybody needs insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas that allows the body to convert food into energy for activity. People who don’t have diabetes make and use the right amount of this chemical. People with diabetes either don’t make any insulin, don’t make enough, or can’t use the insulin they make properly. If you or someone you’re caring for has type 2 diabetes, it’s important to balance food, activity, and—in some cases—medications, which may include insulin injections or an insulin pump (insulin isn’t available in pill form), to get the necessary amount of this essential hormone. And to dispense with another myth in this area: Insulin is a tool to manage diabetes, not a cure.

In celebration of National Diabetes Awareness Month, Divabetic’s kicking to the curb all the common myths associated with diabetes. Of course, were going to do it with style! Bananarama’s 80’s hit song “I Heard A Rumor” helps us to dispel DIABETES MYTH #2: People with diabetes must eat a special diet.
FACT: A healthy diet for someone with diabetes is the same as a healthy diet for anyone else. How does that look? A wholesome meal plan is based on whole-grain foods, lean protein, vegetables, and fruit. Such a diet is low in fat (particularly saturated and trans fat), salt, and simple sugars. So-called diabetic foods offer no special benefits. The best bet is to skip these costly commercial offerings and head for the produce aisle instead.

In celebration of National Diabetes Awareness Month, Divabetic’s kicking to the curb all the common myths associated with diabetes. Of course, were going to do it with style! Adele’s hot new track “Rumor Has It” helps us to dispel MYTH #1: Eating too much sugar causes diabetes.
Fact: No, it does not. Type 1 diabetes is caused by genetics and unknown factors that trigger the onset of the disease; type 2 diabetes is caused by genetics and lifestyle factors. Being overweight does increase your risk for developing type 2 diabetes, and a diet high in calories, whether from sugar or from fat, can contribute to weight gain. If you have a history of diabetes in your family, eating a healthy meal plan and regular exercise are recommended to manage your weight.

Former Top Chef contestant and Chef Sam Talbot’s new book, THE SWEET LIFE: Diabetes Without Boundaries focuses on how diabetes has affected but not compromised Sam’s life or career, and includes his own tips on how to handle everything from work and hobbies to relationships and travel with discipline and enthusiasm. THE SWEET LIFE features 75 innovative recipes for fresh, all-natural dishes anybody, with or without diabetes, can prepare and enjoy.
Best of all, every one of Sam’s recipes is a dish home cooks will be proud to serve to family or guests; as he astutely points out, anyone concerned with his health would do well to eat like a diabetic, and when the food is this alluring, there is no reason not to.
“One great perk about being a chef (and getting some media attention from my stint on Top Chef) is being able to bring attention to causes I believe in, which is why I’ve teamed up with JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), an organization that provides resources for diabetes and is working for better ways to create and ultimately cure type 1 diabetes,” says Sam Talbot. A portion of the proceeds from the book will go to benefit JDRF’s Sweet Life Kitchen.

“Someone Like You” is the new song by English singer-songwriter Adele that’s quickly become one of our favorites. Written by Adele and Dan Wilson for her album 21, the song was inspired by a broken relationship of hers, and lyrically it speaks of Adele coming to terms with it. Accompanied just by a simple piano sound in the song, Adele sings about the end of the relationship with her ex-boyfriend, Welsh-American fashion designer Gareth Jones, and she is confronting his marriage. We love, love, love Adele’s performance as well as the extremely personal lyrics.

My 11-year-old son likes treats. There is a container of red licorice on the table I have to resist whenever I enter the kitchen to grab an apple.
