The happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic visited SUNY Downstate Medical Center to play his food game, Serve Taste or Trash! Game with healthcare providers, staff members, medical students and patients. SUNY Downstate Medical Center is one of the nation’s leading urban medical centers, serving the people of Brooklyn since 1860.

Mr. Divabetic’s Serve, Taste or Trash! Game aims to encourage kids of all ages to become more open-minded eaters. Each game features three different food and/or beverage choices. To play you must decide which choice you’d serve, which choice you’d taste and which one you’d trash.

How many calories are your drinking? Today’s Serve, Taste or Trash! Game challenge features Coca Cola, Poland Springs Water and Brooklyn Summer Ale. Mr. Divabetic with special guest divabetic, Lorraine Brooks tested each player’s ‘Beverage IQ’ with questions ranging from how alcohol affects your blood sugars to the number of cans of soda a day it takes to elevate your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. In addition, Downstate Medical healthcare providers and staff members offered their suggestions on how to increase your daily water intake.

Did you know? A new study indicates that drinking one or more cans of soda a day can increase one’s risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. One in five were at elevated risk of diabetes with as little as one can per day according to statistics published in the journal Diabetologia.

Mr. Divabetic Revs Up The New York International Auto Show

The happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic heads to the New York International Auto Show, North America’s first and largest attended auto show featuring 1,000 vehicles plus the latest in tech, safety and innovation today.

The happy healthcare host plans to play his fun, food game, Serve, Taste or Trash! with attendees as well as raise awareness of the necessary precautions people living with diabetes should take before getting behind the wheel.

Sudden bouts of low blood sugar, or hypoglycemia, can lead to confusion, delayed reaction, visual disturbances or loss of consciousness when driving. Even in the absence of low blood sugar, people with diabetes may have impaired vision or nerve function in the feet, which can affect driving.

Partly as a result, drivers with diabetes are 12 percent to 19 percent more likely than other drivers to have a car accident, studies show.

Max 'Mr. Divabetic' Szadek

Max ‘Mr. Divabetic’ Szadek

A study of 202 people with diabetes who were taking insulin found that about 60 percent of participants never tested their blood glucose levels before driving. Most participants said they would stop driving if they began to feel symptoms of hypoglycemia, but it can be difficult to recognize milder symptoms, such as blurry vision, sweating or feeling tired or irritable, said Dr. Daniel Lorber, director of endocrinology at New York Hospital Queens.

“If it drops further, then you get into some severe thinking and judgment issues, and that’s what we’re concerned about,” he said. “You could pass out or have a seizure.”

Awareness of the problem is surprisingly limited. A study in 2003 that surveyed people with diabetes in seven American and four European cities found that half of those with Type 1 and three-fourths of those with Type 2 diabetes reported that their doctors had never told them about the dangers of hypoglycemia and driving.

While most accidents related to diabetes complications happen to a small group of people with Type 1 diabetes, who need to take insulin, people with Type 2 diabetes are also at risk.

Yogurt Has As Much Sugar As 2 Doughnuts

January 13, 2013

Divabetic

Do you think yogurt is healthier than doughnuts?

A lot of people consider Yoplait yogurt  to be  a ‘healthy treat’ until they find out how much sugar it actually contains. A 6 oz container of Yoplait Key Lime yogurt contains 26 grams of sugar. And it’s hard to imagine what else could be in it after looking at the small size of the container.

Let’s face it, America runs on a lot more ‘sugar’, than Dunkin Donuts, thanks to many of  popular food products.

About 12 grams of the sugar in a 6-oz serving of yogurt is natural milk sugar, or lactose. But every 4 grams on top of that equals a teaspoon of added sugar, says registered dietitian Cassie Dimmick.

The happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic puts foods, like Yoplait yogurt, claiming to be ‘healthy’ to the test in his food game, Serve, Taste or Trash! at Full, Fit & Fabulous event in New York City.

Watch if New Yorkers can identify the healthiest treat from the three ‘Serve, Taste or Trash!’ Food Game choices of food products bought at a convenience store. You might be surprised by the results.

STAY HEALTHY: Check out the nutritional labels on flavored yogurts (Yoplait Light peach has just 14 grams); if your favorite brand of yogurt has 25 grams or more then it’s dessert.

Can You Overdose On Brussels Sprouts?

December 23, 2012
Serve, Taste or Trash! Food Game

Serve, Taste or Trash! Food Game

Apparently the answer is ‘YES’! A man from Ayrshire, Scotland, was hospitalized after eating too many of them last Christmas, according to the Medical Journal of Australia.

Brussels sprouts haters should note that this is a unique case — not an invitation to TRASH the  cruciferous morsels. The man was on blood-thinners after receiving a mechanical heart, the BBC reported. The abundant vitamin K in the sprouts promotes blood-clotting, so it nullified the effects of his medication.

“Patients who are taking anticoagulants are generally advised not to eat too many green leafy vegetables,” cardiologist Dr. Roy Gardner said in the Mirror.

Brussels sprouts are rich in healthy omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin A, B vitamins (thiamine, niacin, and folate) and vitamin E, and might help prevent heart disease and a recurrence of cancer.

Wednesday’s World Premiere Video: Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

December 12, 2012

2012_Finish_Line_at_Worcestesr_Making_StridesThe happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic salutes breast cancer survivors living with diabetes by rolling out the red tomato carpet at the 2012 American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in Central Park, NY.

The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk unites communities to celebrate people who have battled breast cancer, educate people about ways to reduce their risk, and brings us all one step closer to a cure and new treatments. Since 1993, nearly 7 million walkers have raised more than $400 million to help fight breast cancer by participating in non-competitive, 3- to 5-mile events.

Mr. Divabetic plays his nutrition game, Serve, Taste or Trash! with New Yorkers in Central Park to hilarious results. In the game, you’re given three choices of fruits and vegetables. You must decide which one you’d serve, which one you’d taste and which one you’d trash.

Before you decide to “trash” a veggie for good, why not try to eat it raw? Raw veggies can be more appetizing than their cooked counterparts to people who aren’t crazy about vegetables. The flavors of raw veggies can be milder than those of cooked ones. And the texture is crispy, rather than mushy. Let Mr. Divabetic inspire you to eat more fruits and vegetables.

Would You Choose to ‘Serve, Taste or Trash’ a Melon???

August 19, 2012

Divabetic SummerLet Mr. Divabetic help inspire you to overcome aversions to fruits and vegetables you think you don’t like, and even learn to love them with his new food game, Serve, Taste or Trash.

See if other people share the same sentiments you do about similar fruits and vegetables. You might be surprised by the results.  In the game, you’re given three choices of fruits and vegetables. You must decide which one you’d serve, which one you’d taste and which one you’d trash.

Would you TRASH a melon? Honeydew is part of the muskmelon family, along with cantaloupe and person melon. This family is also known as netted melon; their skin looks like its covered with a thick, rough netting. Honeydew is very aromatic, but if they’re picked too early they won’t become as sweet and flavorful.

Melon is thought to have originated in Persia and was also prized years later by ancient Egyptians. Today honeydew is grown in Mexico, California, Arizona, and parts of the southwest and is most abundant from late summer through early fall.

One cup of diced honeydew has 61 calories, 15 grams of carbs and 5% of your daily recommended dose of fiber and 51% of your daily recommended amount of vitamin C.   This melon also haspotassium, folate, vitamin B6, and vitamin K.

Choose honeydew melons that are firm-but-not-hard and have a nice floral smell. Compare melons and select those that are heavier for its size—the heavier it is, the juicier it will be. Knock on a melon and listen for a deep, thick sound which will tell you if it’s ripe. Store whole melon at room temperature for 2 to 4 days. Once sliced, wrap and refrigerate for up to 5 days.

If you choose to serve melon why not turn it into smoothies, juice, granita, sorbet or soup? Pair sweet honeydew with more savory food like prosciutto or chicken or add it to a veggie salad (honeydew-cucumber salad anyone?).
