Paula Deen’s Weight Loss is A Family Affair

January 26, 2013
Paula Deen is a "Divabetic"

Paula Deen is a “Divabetic”

Newly anointed “Divabetic” Paula Deen is the first one to admit: “When I first found out I was diabetic, I had no solutions. I couldn’t even help myself, much less somebody else.”

Do you feel the same way? If so, tune in to Divabetic’s free monthly diabetes educational podcast, Diabetes Roundtable to help you journey from “diagnosis to DIVA! YOU can do it.

In this week’s issue, the 66-year-old Food Network star invited PEOPLE into her Savannah home to share how her family members adopted different weight loss strategies and lost an astounding 178 lbs. total.

By figuring out a diet plan that works for their particular schedule and lifestyle, Deen’s husband Michael Groover shed 60 lbs., her oldest son Jamie got rid of an excess 45 lbs., and her youngest son Bobby maintained his 33-lb. loss. But no one sacrificed their love of Southern food. Instead they learned to stick to Deen’s new mantra. “Moderation, moderation, moderation,” says Deen, whose new cookbook The New Testament due out this fall will include her go-to recipes and tips. “I love feeding people but now I also want to help people eat right.”

Of course, a few small changes to her cooking repertoire can’t hurt, either. Deen has reportedly swapped in Greek yogurt for creaminess in some of her recipes, HuffPost Food reported earlier this month.

August 25, 2012

Divabetic SummerCelebrity chef, Paula Deen showed off Divabetic’s ‘GLAM MORE, FEAR LESS’ philosophy on a recent interview with the hosts of “Good Morning America.” The Food Network star, who announced that she’s living with type 2 diabetes back in January, had some good news to share. Martha Moves ‘Cooking School’ TV Show to PBS

April 21, 2012

From syndication to Hallmark Channel and now to PBS, Martha Stewart continues her march across the TV landscape in search of a sustainable audience.

Martha’s new weekly series, “Martha Stewart’s Cooking School,” will debut on PBS in the fall. Stewart’s Living Omnimedia company is producing the show with the District station WETA, which calls the show a “teaching series.”

In January, Hallmark announced that it was pulling the daily “The Martha Stewart Show” in the summer. The home-entertainment maven has struggled at the cable network for a couple of years, having migrated there after a spell in the rough-and-tumble world of daytime syndication.

Ad Makes Light of Paula Deen’s Denial

February 1, 2012

Divabetic: Gym Ad Take On Paula Deen

New York Sports Club took out an ad in the New York Times that turned into news itself: the text read, “Paula, you made a fortune off of fat. Call us if you want to be around to enjoy it.”

They were referring to Paula Deen — the Food Network star who is best known for her high-fat and high-sugar  Southern comfort food.

Recently, Paula Deen revealed that she has been living with Type 2 diabetes for the past three years, drawing criticism from around the globe for concealing the condition while promoting unhealthy foods. What’s more, many questioned her motivation for speaking out, given her timing. She’d signed a multi-million dollar deal with pharmaceutical company to promote their diabetes drug while she continues to profit from peddling diabetes-inappropriate fare.

According to reports, Paula Deen has made an estimated $30 million during the period between her diagnosis and her public statement about the disorder.

Paula Deen Swears Off Sweet Tea

January 18, 2012

Divabetic: Paula Says "No More Sweet Tea!"

Anthony Bourdain, who famously blasted Food Network star Paula Deen

last year, calling her the “most dangerous person to America,” has weighed in on the news that Paula Deen – known for whipping up decadent desserts like Twinkie pie and coconut chocolate chip gooey cake – suffers from type 2 diabetes and is now a paid spokeswoman for a diabetes medication.

After Paula Deen‘s announcement on Tuesday, the outspoken New York chef wrote: “Thinking of getting into the leg-breaking business, so I can profitably sell crutches later.”

Last summer Bourdain called Deen “most dangerous person to America” who’s “proud of the fact that her food is f—— bad for you.”

At the time, Deen – whose recipes include chocolate cheese fudge made with Velveeta – fired back that Bourdain should “get a life.”

Paula Deen told Al Roker on the Today Show that she doesn’t plan to change how she cooks, but said she has always encouraged moderation.

“I share with you all these yummy, fattening recipes,” she said on “Today.” “But I tell people, in moderation … it’s entertainment. People have to be responsible.”

Trainer Bob Harper says Paula Deen needs to overhaul her life for the sake of her fans and her own health.

“Her food is just entirely too decadent. If you eat like that, it’s going to come back and bite you,” says Harper, who is helping a new crop of overweight contestants shed pounds on season 13 of NBC’s The Biggest Loser.  “She’s going to have to get in the kitchen and find a way to get creative with the foods she loves to eat, make them healthier.”

Paula Deen has said that since the diagnosis, she quit drinking sweet tea. That’s a big change for a Southern gal.

And striking an even gentler note, Dr. Travis Stork, ER physician and co-host of The Doctors, adds: “Life is all about choices. The light bulb moment has to happen for everyone – hopefully this is Paula’s.”

Paula Deen Rumored to be a ‘DIVA-betic’

January 13, 2012

Divabetic: Paula Deen

News is breaking tonight  that Food Network star Paula Deen, beloved queen of high-calorie, Southern cooking, is about to confess she’ll be eating her own dishes in moderation from now on because she has diabetes.

Paula Deen, 64, has not addressed the buzz, which started in April when the National Enquirer reported she has type 2 diabetes.

Insiders say the Georgia native has started changing her cooking approach and will soon make healthier options available at her Savannah, Ga., restaurant, The Lady & Sons.

Her son, Bobby Deen, has already jumped on the healthier food bandwagon. Earlier this month, he launched the series,  “Not My Mama’s Meals,” on the Cooking Channel, where he creates less fatty versions of his mother’s old-fashioned Southern recipes.

Sources say Paula Deen plans to soon announce her condition because she has cooked up a lucrative deal with a pharmaceutical company  to endorse the drug she’s taking.

Hungry Girl Bites Into A New TV Season

August 25, 2011

Divabetic Loves Hungry Girl

It’s a been a busy frew years for Lisa Lillien, known as “Hungry Girl.” She has put out four best-selling cookbooks, has about 1, 000,000 subscribers to her aily newsletter and is in the second season of her cooking show, “Hungry Girl,” airing on Food Network.

If you’re not familiar with Hungry Girl, she is a hyperkinetic 43-year-old former TV producer named Lisa Lillien, who once upon a time hated the fact that she couldn’t fit into her skinny jeans. “I was that person who would sit at the computer and eat an entire bag of fat-free pretzels and think I was doing a good thing,” Lillien says. “I wasn’t.”

Lillien grew up on Long Island.  She lost 25 pounds several years ago, and in 2003 she started sending her friends low-fat recipes and tips for finding healthful food in mainstream supermarkets. She then turned herself into a cartoon character on the Internet called Hungry Girl.  Wow, that’s a diva move!

What we love, love, love about her is that her best-selling cookbooks are for people who don’t really cook! Lillien feels that she (and all of us) can lose weight while still eating her favorite foods — or at least some version of them. Hungry Girl recipes approximate the foods Lillien knows her adherents (mostly women) crave, such as fried calamari, onion rings and that totem of post-feminist gastronomic fetishes: cute cupcakes.

Hungry for more healthy eating information then tune in to Diva Talk Radio on divabetic.org We’re podcasting with atittude!
