Divabetic Mangos And Magnolias Stage Show

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” is what several attendees said about the Divabetic Zone at the Taking Control Of Your Diabetes (TCOYD) Conference & Health Fair in Savannah, GA.

The Divabetic Zone was packed with smiling faces, upbeat attitudes and laughter all day long.

The happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic kicked off his newest diabetes outreach stage show called “Mangos & Magnolias” at 8 AM on Saturday, May 18, 2013 and never seemed to stop.

“It was my first time to Savannah so I really wanted to put on a show. I wasn’t looking at the clock,” says Max ‘Mr. Divabetic’ Szadek.”Everyone was so friendly. We were having such a good time that I just didn’t want to stop! I love it when we get the crowds to laugh a little and learn a lot. That’s my goal and it blows me away each and everytime it happens.”

This high-energy interactive stage show stretched eight hours with it’s fruity combination of nutrition advice, fun workouts, games and prizes with a dash of Southern charm. Popular show segments like ‘Dancing In Cars’ Chair Cardio Routines have been revved up with hits from One Direction and Nicki Minaj.  ‘Single Ladies/Single Servings’ Portion Games and Carb Kitty, are now featured in between new games such as ‘Mangos & Magnolias’ Diabetes IQ and a Cowboy-inspired fitness demonstration called ‘Rawhide Workouts.’

Hungry Grocery Shoppers Buy More Junk Food

May 18, 2013

Grocery shopping while hungry can lead to out of control snacking and an entire week’s worth of unhealthy eating according to new research from Cornell University.

The Cornell researchers followed 68 shoppers as they clicked through an online grocery site that offered a mix of healthy choices — including fruits, vegetables and lean meats — and unhealthy, high calorie snack foods like candy, chips and soda.

The shoppers who didn’t eat for four to five hours before filling their virtual food baskets bought the same number of items as the shoppers who snacked on crackers before clicking away. But the hungry shoppers selected more processed junk foods, 23 percent more on average. A follow up field test where researchers secretly followed shoppers who hadn’t eaten for several hours found much the same.

“You don’t buy more, but you do buy more of the wrong type of calories,” noted Brian Wansink, one of the study’s lead investigators and author of the new book, Slim By Design. “You buy things like cereal, snacks, chips, candy and other convenience foods that require no preparation and that you can eat right away.”

Previous research demonstrated that fasting for up to 18 hours can drive shoppers to make less diet-friendly choices and spend more cash overall. But this is the first study to show you don’t have to be terribly hungry for your judgment to be affected.

Even just a few hours without eating is enough to send you in search of a quick fix to satisfy hunger. And, as Wansink noted, this is often the state shoppers find themselves in as they rush to the market after a long day of work.

Unfortunately, the effect goes well beyond buying a candy bar to tide you over on the drive home, Wansink said. Shoppers who impulsively purchase ready-to-eat, low nutrition foods set themselves up for repeated diet disasters because they fill their pantries with junk instead of healthier fare.

“It ends up cursing the rest of your week because you bought way too much of the convenience foods and not enough of the good stuff. So now there is less healthy food for you to choose from at home.”

Americans seem to be snacking more than ever. On average, Americans enjoy 2.3 snacks per day according to the latest poll by the Hartman Group. Nearly 30 percent of people said they snack impulsively while another 17 percent reach for a snack when they don’t feel like cooking. Almost 60 percent of respondents said choosing a healthy snack is important to them, yet the two most popular snacks choices are chips and soda.

Wansink said the obvious moral here is don’t shop hungry.

“It helps to plan your visit to the supermarket and if you’re hungry, eat an apple before you go,” he said.

Ryan Gossling Won’t Eat His Cereal

Ryan Gosling may be taking a break from acting, but he’s still the star of the internet.

The hunky 32-year-old featured in a series of eight Vine postings dubbed “Ryan Gosling Won’t Eat His Cereal,” in which creator Ryan McHenry edits together clips of Gosling in his movies with a hovering spoonful of breakfast.

Thanks to McHenry’s artful collage work, Gosling appears to refuse the cereal every time. In one installment, he wrinkles his lip. In another, he appears to smack the spoon clean out of the bearer’s hand.

McHenry, whose short film “Zombie Musical” won a BAFTA New Talent award, was inspired to create the videos while watching “Drive” and eating cereal, he told Entertainment Weekly.

The series follows in the footsteps of other Gosling-centric internet sensations like blogs Feminist Ryan Gosling and F-k Yeah! Ryan Gosling.

Though the actor hasn’t commented on this particular viral video series, he shared some of his favorite fan artwork with MTV back in 2010.

“They’re hilarious,” Gosling said. “Here’s one of me looking at some ducks, and I’m in some kind of ‘Star Trek’ jacket,” he said. “I don’t know why I have that. And it says, ‘Hey Girl, I’m just sitting on the dock of the bay, wishing I could waste the rest of the day with you instead of these ducks.’”

“They’ve nailed it,” he laughed. “I’m going to make a movie about ‘Hey Girl.’”

The Plate Poetry Project Coming to Philadelphia

May 8, 2013
The Plate Poetry Project

The Plate Poetry Project

The Plate Poetry Project is a diabetes outreach program focusing on the emotional issues surrounding food and eating. The goal of the program is to help empower, educate and connect people living with diabetes and healthcare providers about issues surrounding food, nutrition, diet, weight loss and diabetes health.

Through interactive art installations and symposiums (featuring both patients and healthcare professionals) Divabetic is providing a safe forum for people to express the words and phrases we say to ourselves (both negative and positive) when we’re eating, food shopping and/or preparing meals.

Graphic designer, fine artist Susan McCaslin’s thought provoking art display, “What’s Eating You?” features tables of flatware and dish-ware labeled with an assorted words. The words, which range from ‘guilt’, ‘deprived’ and ‘fat’ to ‘hope’ ‘fuel’ and ‘beautiful,’ comprise the private thoughts we say or think to ourselves and/or others when we’re eating and drinking. Visitors rearrange the plates to create their own phrases and statements about food, food issues and diabetes on the interactive table displays.  What is your food saying to you? What are you saying to your food?  These are the questions that the art installation hopes to address.

A Diabetes Resource table featuring diabetes information will be located adjacent to the Plate Poetry Displays will be hosted by various healthcare personnel, volunteers and students.

Jada Pinkett What Are You Eating?

May 1, 2013
What Are You Eating?

What Are You Eating?

The best way to look from every angle on the Red Carpet is make sure you’re eating right. This is why the first question burning on Mr. Divabetic’s lips on the Red Tomato Carpet to ask a celebrity like Jada Pinkett is “what are you eating?”

With plenty of cash to hire personal trainers and private chefs, one of Hollywood’s hottest actresses might seem to have all the tools in place for perfect health but how does she avoid temptation?

Jada Pinkett she admits she still craves “McDonald’s French fries.”

The 41-year-old mom to Jaden, 14, and Willow, 12, who recently showed off an extremely toned beach body on a vacation to Hawaii also admits to facing the same challenges we all do: keeping her career hot, her marriage hotter, and her body hottest.

She told Essence that she normally just sees food as a way to power her body: I don’t eat for pleasure. I eat for my schedule, so I have to eat high-protein, lots of greens and healthy carbs so that I don’t fall flat on my face.”

Jada tweeted a photo of herself emerging from the surf, James Bond girl-style, with the message: “To my Forty and over crew! Don’t believe the hype…we DO get better with age!” (Jada turned 40 last September.)

New Sun Chips Sweet & Spicy BBQ Flavored Snacks

April 26, 2013
Divabetic - Single Ladies/sSingle Servings

Divabetic – Single Ladies/sSingle Servings

Like most Divabetics we’re on a quest to be a ‘better eater not a perfect eater’ in the snack aisle searching for reasonably healthy food that actually tastes good. Of course as soon as we spied SunChips’ new Sweet & Spicy BBQ flavor the minute they hit grocery store shelves we were all over that like hummus on a pita chip.

The front of the bag features the chips leaning against a dipping bowl of barbecue sauce, alongside chili peppers and the label pushing that they’re multigrain and a stamp emphasizes the all-natural ingredients and lack of MSG, preservatives, and artificial flavors.

We crunched in to our first chip to find the usual great Sun Chips texture spiced up by a tasty sweet barbecue season, but surprisingly, the heat that the bag had promised was largely absent. The sweetness comes through loud and clear but there’s not much spice. Even without more spice, this is still a good flavor.

Mr. Divabetic’s Newest Video at NY International Auto Show

Divabetic at NY International Auto Show

Divabetic at NY International Auto Show

See what happens when the happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic brings his dazzling brand of diabetes outreach to the New York International Auto Show in New York, NY in his latest Serve, Taste or Trash! Game video.

The New York International Auto Show is North America’s first and largest attended auto show featuring 1,000 vehicles plus the latest in tech, safety and innovation.
You might be surprised by the results. In the game, you’re given three choices of popular foods. You must decide which one you’d serve, which one you’d taste and which one you’d trash. The goal of the game is to encourage people to become more open-minded eaters.

Mr. Divabetic wants to raise awareness for the necessary precautions people living with diabetes should take before getting behind the wheel. Did you know that sudden bouts of low blood sugar, or hypoglycemia, can lead to confusion, delayed reaction, visual disturbances or loss of consciousness when driving? Even in the absence of low blood sugar, people with diabetes may have impaired vision or nerve function in the feet, which can affect driving.

While most accidents related to diabetes complications happen to a small group of people with Type 1 diabetes, who need to take insulin, people with Type 2 diabetes are also at risk.

Why Can’t Americans Lose Weight?

April 12, 2013
Fat Letters

Fat Letters

American children and adults are eating fewer calories, yet obesity rates haven’t improved, according to a series of recent reports from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That means it’s going to take more than counting calories for the country to slim down.

Americans may simply be eating the wrong types of calories. It’s important to focus on where your calories are coming from, and fill your diet with minimally processed plant-based foods as much as possible. Cutting out soda and other sugar-sweetened drinks can also make a big difference.

“I would recommend that people follow dietary guidelines, which means eating a healthy diet,” said Bethene Ervin, PhD, a nutritional epidemiologist with the National Center for Health Statistics at the CDC. “This includes limiting fat intake and consuming lots of fruits and vegetables. That would be the best way to beat obesity.”

Remember that it’s not a matter of giving up your favorite foods. It’s about eating wisely. When it comes to a healthy diet, make sure that every calorie counts.
