You might be surprised by the results. In the game, you’re given three choices of fruits and vegetables. You must decide which one you’d serve, which one you’d taste and which one you’d trash. Before you decide to “trash” a veggie for good, why not try to eat it raw? Raw veggies can be more appetizing than their cooked counterparts to people who aren’t crazy about vegetables. The flavors of raw veggies can be milder than those of cooked ones. Why Too Much Sugar is Toxic

November 19, 2012

Divabetic FallThe average American eats 2 to 3 pounds of sugar a week. That includes table sugar used in coffee, brown sugar used in cooking, soft drinks, sweetened tea and processed foods containing sugar.

While it is true our bodies need sugar (glucose) since this is the only fuel the brain can use, it’s important to note that a fully functioning body produces enough sugar for the body through the natural digestion of whole, unprocessed foods. By eating healthy carbohydrates like fruits and whole grains you can give your body all of the glucose it needs without ever having to eat refined white or brown sugar.

Refined sugar has been stripped of all of its vitamins, minerals and fiber and therefore does not digest naturally. In order to metabolize sugar through the kidneys, the heart is forced to work extra hard. On top of that, when sugar is released in the bloodstream, it causes an influx of adrenaline, which also puts unnecessary stress on the heart. Eating sugar before going to bed makes the heart work exceptionally hard and puts your health in danger.

Sugar also has addictive properties that make breaking the habit as hard withdrawing from some narcotics. The good news is that its possible to curb your sugar addiction according to Karen Ficarelli is the founder and CEO of Fitness4Her.com.

Karen Ficarelli says, “begin by adding one extra fruit to your daily diet each week or every two weeks. For each fruit you add, subtract one teaspoon or one source of processed foods such as cookies or cake from your diet. Substituting fruit for processed sugar will change your taste buds and train them to appreciate the fructose in place of the sucrose. It may take some time, but it will be a change that you can live with for the rest of your life.”

Delicious Ways to Lower Risk of Heart Attacks

September 29, 2012

Divabetic FallEating lots of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables could help keep women’s heart attack risk low, according to a large new study. Does this answer questions about why the happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic wears a fruit suit?

GLAM MORE, FEAR LESS!

Researchers from the Karolinska Institute found that women who consumed the most antioxidants from foods — not to mention ate nearly seven servings of fruits and vegetables each day — had a 20 percent decreased risk of having a heart attack over a 10-year period.

Even though past studies have not shown any immense benefit from taking antioxidant supplements on heart attack risk, the researchers noted that the positive effect observed in this study may be because the women ate actual fruits and vegetables.

“In contrast to supplements of single antioxidants, the dietary total antioxidant capacity reflects all present antioxidants, including thousands of compounds, all of them in doses present in our usual diet, and even takes into account their synergistic effects,” study researcher Dr. Alicja Wolk, DrMedSci, said in a statement. Reprinted from Huffington Post

Good News for People Would Hate Eggplant

August 17, 2012

Divabetic SummerOkay, a lot of people who play Divabetic’s new food game, ‘Serve Taste or Trash’  say they hate eggplant. Kids, particularly, seem hard pressed to even try it. Maybe it’s the name. I don’t think the inclusion of “egg” does it any favors, especially where kids are concerned. Or maybe it’s be the spongy texture of eggplant when it’s uncooked. It can also turn into a soggy mess if it’s not cooked correctly.

The happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic wants to help you overcome aversions to fruits and vegetables you think you don’t like, and even learn to love them with his new food game, Serve, Taste or Trash.  You might be amazed to learn that there are a lot of people in the world who actually love the food you hate including eggplant (!) who are willing to share their favorite recipes with Divabetic so you might be tempted to give it another try.

http://youtu.be/BDlGGsRbvCA

If you’re one of the people in the universe who is willing to ‘trash’ eggplant –  here’s a sure-fire recipe that may prove the exception for those who don’t like eggplant!!!

Eggplant Sunset Salad

  • 1 Large Eggplant
  • 4 Large cloves garlic
  • 1 Serrano pepper
  • Juice of one lemon
  • 2 ounces B.E. Wholegrain liquid
  • Sea Salt
  • Coconut Oil for Frying
  1. Peel and cut eggplant into thick slices.
  2. Sprinkle with salt on both sides and place in a single layer in a colander.
  3. Place a bowl on top (as a weight) and allow to drain the excess liquid that develops for an hour.
  4. While eggplant is draining, mince garlic and pepper. Mix with 2 tablespoons Sea Salt, lemn juice and B.E. Wholegrain liquid. Set aside.
  5. Heat a few tablespoons of oil in a large nonstick sauté pan over med/high heat. Fry eggplant until golden brown on both sides. Remove from heat and place the slices on a cutting board. When cool enough to handle, but not cold, cut slices into cubes and put into a bowl with dressing made above. Toss and allow to sit for 20 minutes before serving.

Saturday Morning Cat Lovers’ Cartoons

June 30, 2012
Ready for some  Saturday morning fun? Mr. Divabetic‘s cat-friendly cartoon, Carb Kitty, makes counting carbs easy.
Between the potato salad, the hamburger buns, and the strawberry shortcake served  at the cookout on July 4th, you may not realize how many carbohydrates you’re eating. Carbohydrates (“carbs”) can be counted 2 ways: by grams or by carb choices. Remember: 1 carb choice = 15 grams of carbohydrate.
The foods highest in carbs are high in starch or sugar. This includes anything made with flour or sugar, grains, foods with added sugar, and starchy vegetables such as potatoes and corn. Most processed foods are high in carbohydrates. Examples of low carb foods are proteins such as meat and eggs, most vegetables, low sugar fruits (such as strawberries), soy beans, and some dairy products.#carbkitty
