Planning a trip? Whether you’re sightseeing, sailing or just shopping, you can go anywhere and do almost anything if you’re living with diabetes. It just takes a little planning ahead to handle your diabetes.
How you prepare depends on where you’re going and for how long. Two weeks sightseeing through Italy requires different planning than a weekend at your in-laws. Will you be crossing time zones? What kind of food will you eat and when? Will you be more active or less active than usual?
Take your cue from Sophia Petrillo on ‘The Golden Girls’ – and always carry a bag! She owned a tan bamboo handbag which became her personal trademark, as she carried the purse everywhere, even around the house (including the bathroom!) Well, you don’t have to go that far but being prepared for the unexpected is a great way to stay on top of your diabetes management. Fill your bag with all the necessary supplies including your glucose monitor, lancets, glucose tablets, emergency contact information and a list of your medications.

The reason we chose the ‘Golden Girls’ as the theme for this year’s Divabetic outreach tour is because we wanted to promote the idea of working with a team of friends, family and healthcare professionals to manage your diabetes. “THANK YOU FOR BEING A FRIEND!”
Dealing with diabetes on a daily basis can often be overwhelming and isolating for many of our divas. In virtually every episode of the Golden Girls the ‘girls’ seemed to rally together when one or two were in trouble or needed help. My 11-year-old son likes treats. There is a container of red licorice on the table I have to resist whenever I enter the kitchen to grab an apple. When his friends come over they ask me to make them ice cream cones or muffins or for some change for the ice cream man. In the meantime I grab a couple squares of dark chocolate. They are just a little on the […]

I continue to be convinced that having knowledge about the potential health problems that could occur with type 1 is not bad news. I view it as motivation to practice what we know we can prevent or at least delay the onset of these complica […]
