Diagnosis To Diva: Liz Wolff from Cure Thrift Shop

Divabetic Liz Wolff

May’s Diabetes Roundtable podcast special guest, Liz Wolff, the owner of Cure Thrift Shop in New York, NY. This busy wife and mother is  We hope Liz’s story helps to empower you to manage your diabetes with confidence, knowledge and inspiration (like a diva!) this month.

Diagnosis To Diva Story:  I was diagnosed 18 years ago when I was 11 years old. I was a pretty mature 11 year old and was completely comfortable with my diagnosis. With the help of my parents, I immediately jumped into learning how to manage the disease and live a normal and healthy life. But, after a few years, adolescence took control and I was no longer the “model diabetic.” From around the time that I was 14 years old until I was 21, I was completely non-compliant. I rarely tested my blood sugar and took insulin according to how I felt. At one point my a1c was as high as 13! Finally, after getting married at 21, I realized that I could no longer be selfish about my life and my health. I took baby steps – testing a couple of times a day, then 3-4 times a day, until I got used to the new lifestyle. By the time that I was 22 years old, I completely turned my diabetes life around.

Biggest Self-Care Issue or Concern: My biggest self-care concern was always about having a baby. I feared that all of the years of being non-compliant would prevent me from having a safe and healthy pregnancy and delivering a healthy baby. Fortunately, after a tone of testing and tight control, I was given the OK by my doctor to try and conceive. 14 months ago, on my 17 year anniversary of being diagnosed, I delivered a wonderful and healthy baby boy.

Special members of healthcare entourage: My endocrinologist, Dr. Jason Baker is my diabetes hero. He has opened my eyes to a new way of managing myself and my diabetes. He completely guided me and held my hand throughout my pregnancy.

Diabetes Associations/Organizations/Publications You’re Affiliated With: In 2008, I opened Cure Thrift Shop. We are a philanthropic thrift shop benefiting the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation. Outside of Cure Thrift Shop, I participate in various fundraising events to raise money for the DRIF.

Favorite Diabetes Resource: Omnipod – it has changed my life Favorite Celebrity Diva (and why): Bethenny Frankel – she is completely self-made,confident, hilarious, and successful.

Favorite Movie and/or TV Show: All Bravo Reality shows – it’s my guilty pleasure, Girls, Game of Thrones, Mad Men

Favorite Song: “Our House” – Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young

Motivating Mindset:  My experience with diabetes has not been exactly smooth. There are absolutely days when I just let myself go and don’t take care of myself the way that I should be. My inspirations are my husband and my son – I NEED to be alive and well for them. I want to live a long and healthy life.

Your Motto: Hold onto yourself.

More Stories of “Who Inspires Me” by Dr. Beverly S. Adler

March 21, 2013
Mr Divabetic & Dr Bev

Mr Divabetic & Dr Bev

I am a Clinical Psychologist and Certified Diabetes Educator in private practice, specializing in treating the emotional issues of patients with diabetes.  I am also a Person with Diabetes (PWD), type 1, for 38 years and am happy to say I’m complication-free. I am also the author/editor of two books which share insightful lessons of empowerment, written by successful men and women with diabetes.

In the Introduction to my book: MY SWEET LIFE: Successful Men with Diabetes, I wrote a little bit about Dr. Elliot Joslin (1869 – 1962) who understood that the key to diabetes self-care was positive action. He was the first doctor in the United States to specialize in the care of PWDs. Dr. Joslin recognized that managing tight control of one’s blood sugar through diet, exercise, and insulin could extend one’s life and prevent complications.  He created a three-horse chariot to reflect his philosophy of living with diabetes – the three-horse motif symbolized insulin, diet, and exercise, which are needed to achieve control over diabetes. I’ve seen educators who use three balls, juggled in the air simultaneously, to demonstrate the interaction of the three components of diabetes care.

Bob Scheidt, one of my contributing authors to the Men’s book, takes this idea of the triangular facets of diabetes self-care to a new level – a square! Bob focused diabetes care on mind, body and spirit. In his paradigm, diabetes management has four points: medication (insulin), diet, exercise, and spirituality. With all due respect to Dr. Joslin, my book supports the newer four-pronged approach to diabetes care.

Bob Scheidt is about to embark on a new adventure beginning April 1st, 2013.  He will begin a four year, 2,650-mile pilgrimage on foot across the continent of Europe.  He plans to follow in the steps of St Francis of Assisi. “This is my destiny,” says Bob. “This is what I was born to do.” I wish him good luck on his journey as he inspires me and other PWDs. Bob was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was 18 years old, a few months after starting college.

‘Who Inspires Me’ by Dr. Beverly S. Adler

February 26, 2013
'Dr. Bev'

‘Dr. Bev’

I asked my recent Diabetes Roundtable podcast guest, Dr. Beverly S. Adler aka ‘Dr. Bev,’ a clinical psychologist and certified diabetes educator who is living with type 1 diabetes, to share one of her favorite real-life diva inspirations. Here’s what she wrote:

“With my diabetes anniversary coming up on March 14th, I am taking some time to reflect on who inspires me. I have been living with T1D for nearly 38 years.  I am proud to be a licensed Clinical Psychologist  and Certified Diabetes Educator, in private practice, specializing in treating the emotional issues of patients with diabetes. I am the author/editor of two books which share insightful lessons of empowerment, written by successful men and women with diabetes.

One of my favorite chapters in my MY SWEET LIFE: Successful Women with Diabetes book was written by Carol Grafford, a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator. Her chapter is entitled: “Enemy, Neighbor, Dancer, Teacher.” In her chapter she explained that after she was initially diagnosed with diabetes, and she got past the “Why me?” stage, it became clear to her that diabetes was the enemy and they were at war. Her objective was to beat the enemy and “win.”

After a while, her relationship with diabetes evolved to a new stage. She no longer thought of diabetes as the enemy, but she couldn’t say that diabetes was her friend either. She thought of diabetes as an annoying neighbor. Carol stated that she did her thing and diabetes did it’s thing, and they mostly stayed out of each other’s way most of the time.  They were civil to each other, but not friendly. She stated: “It wasn’t great, but it was more comfortable than being enemies.  The relationship was less harsh.”

After a while, her relationship with diabetes got a little closer. She thought of diabetes as a dance partner. Diabetes wasn’t living far away like an enemy nor living like a neighbor down the street. Diabetes was right there: in your space, holding your hands and moving with you all the time.  It’s like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers in the old movies.  Carol started calling her diabetes “Fred.”  Sometimes Fred stepped on her toes.  Sometimes, she stepped on his.  She began to realize that Fred and she were partners – a team.  While she would never have chosen Fred as a friend, they were doing a good job dancing together, and it was comfortable.

As Carol got older (and maybe wiser), her relationship with Fred had changed over time in a subtle way from “dance partner” to teacher. Diabetes will keep giving lessons until she masters them. She stated that she could not be the person she is without diabetes.  Carol credits her diabetes, in large part, that she became a successful woman.

Carol came to realize that it wasn’t the things that she was doing that had changed, but her whole attitude and approach to living.  Through her work helping other people with diabetes, she learned the goal is improvement, not perfection. Carol’s changes in attitude over time helped her emotional adjustment. Ultimately she found that a positive attitude helped her to accept her diabetes and manage it successfully.

Carol Grafford, RD, CDE is a wonderful role model and a true inspiration.”

GLAM MORE, FEAR LESS! Author Riva Greenberg joins the happy healthcare, Mr. Divabetic on February’s Diabetes Roundtable podcast to discuss her lastest book, “Diabetes Do’s & How-To’s.”

Riva Greenberg is a recognized diabetes patient-expert, author, speaker and health coach, who has lived successfully with type 1 diabetes for more than forty years.

Her latest book, “Diabetes Do’s & How-To’s,” came from traveling the country as a peer-mentor, talking with patients and seeing how confused and bereft they are of the actions to take – and how to take them – to live a full, rich, healthy and happy life with diabetes.

Riva is a trusted KOL for pharmaceutical companies bringing the patient voice to health care, and an international speaker at diabetes conferences, health expos, hospitals and corporations. She is also transforming the way we live with chronic illness through workshops she conducts on “flourishing.” “It is time flourishing enters the language of living with a chronic illness.” Riva also advises medical professionals on helping patients make behavior changes through a series of presentations called “Ask the Patient” on QuantiaMD.com.

Author of “50 Diabetes Myths That Can Ruin Your Life and the 50 Diabetes Truths That Can Save It” and “The ABCs Of Loving Yourself With Diabetes,” Riva also writes a column on diabetes and health on The Huffington Post. Wednesday’s World Premiere Video: Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

December 12, 2012

2012_Finish_Line_at_Worcestesr_Making_StridesThe happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic salutes breast cancer survivors living with diabetes by rolling out the red tomato carpet at the 2012 American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in Central Park, NY.

The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk unites communities to celebrate people who have battled breast cancer, educate people about ways to reduce their risk, and brings us all one step closer to a cure and new treatments. Since 1993, nearly 7 million walkers have raised more than $400 million to help fight breast cancer by participating in non-competitive, 3- to 5-mile events.

Mr. Divabetic plays his nutrition game, Serve, Taste or Trash! with New Yorkers in Central Park to hilarious results. In the game, you’re given three choices of fruits and vegetables. You must decide which one you’d serve, which one you’d taste and which one you’d trash.

Before you decide to “trash” a veggie for good, why not try to eat it raw? Raw veggies can be more appetizing than their cooked counterparts to people who aren’t crazy about vegetables. The flavors of raw veggies can be milder than those of cooked ones. And the texture is crispy, rather than mushy. Let Mr. Divabetic inspire you to eat more fruits and vegetables.

Divabetic: What Diabetes Cannot DoMarie, a member of the Divabetic Club – Philly, shared this inspiring poem, What Diabetes Cannot Do, with me to help other divas living with diabetes to stay upbeat about their care.

Diabetes is so limited -

It cannot cripple love

it cannot shatter hope

it cannot corrode faith

It cannot destroy peace

It cannot kill friendship

It cannot suppress memories

It cannot silence courage

It cannot invade the soul

It cannot steal eternal life

It cannot conquer the spirit
