Katie Couric’s New Show Gets “Rosie” Reviews

September 11, 2012

Katie CouricKatie Couric‘s long-awaited daytime show debuted on Monday, and the reviews are mixed. We hated the set with the cliche white chairs, wood stage and the lighting. Didn’t Oprah’s set look the exactly the same – ten years ago?!!

The former “Today” co-host and “CBS Evening News” anchor has been preparing for “Katie” for over a year. She debuted with Jessica Simpson, who talked about her weight loss struggle, and Sheryl Crow as guests.

Critics seemed to agree that Couric won on likeability — a critical factor for success in daytime. The Daily News described her as “friendly, gentle and warm,” while SF Gate said that she is still “America’s TV princess and Newsday said she “looked and sounded sharp”, and The New York Times acknowledged that “Couric tried to prove to her audience that she is one of them.”.

“Lackluster,” “cheesy” and “cheery” were some of the words other critics used to describe Couric’s first day. “…if she wanted a soft opening, she got it,” the New York Daily News wrote. “You could have thrown this show into a pool and created no ripples.”

The show also drew fire for not showcasing Couric’s journalistic chops. Couric’s interview with Jessica Simpson — which featured Simpson’s commercial for Weight Watchers and a conversation with a Weight Watchers group leader who talked about the program — raised eyebows. SF Gate compared the segment to “an infomerical” —a sentiment echoed by the New York Daily News, which said that “Simpson primarily seemed to be promoting Weight Watchers.”

We think Jessica’s done an amazing job of shedding the weight she gained during her pregnancy. The star says: “I’m 10 pounds away from my prebaby size!”

How’s she doing it? Four days a week, Simpson reports to trainer Harley Pasternak for a 45-minute session. After a cardio warm-up, it’s circuit time: seven sets (up to 30 reps each) of dumbbell triceps extensions, hamstring curls and crunches with a medicine ball throw. “Her waist is going in, and her thighs are growing smaller,” says Pasternak.

And just like losing weight, we think “Katie” will reach it’s goal in the next few weeks with guests Heidi Klum, flesh-eating bacteria victim Aimee Copeland and “Fifty Shades of Grey” author E.L. James — who promise to be more engaging.

Weight Watchers And Jenny Craig Support NYC Super Size Soda Ban

September 6, 2012

Divabetic SummerNew York City’s planned crackdown on super-sized sugary drinks has received prominent backing from Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, the creator of the South Beach Diet, the founder of The Best Life and other diet companies.

The announcement – made at a press conference featuring Mayor Michael Bloomberg and a top Weight Watchers official – was the latest in a volley of statements of support for both advocates and critics of the plan, which calls for restaurants, movie theaters, sports arenas, food carts and delis to stop selling sodas and other sugary drinks in servings larger than 16 ounces.

Bloomberg and other proponents call the Super Size Soda Ban a sensible way to encourage people to cut calories. Opponents see it as government overreaching and question its effectiveness.

To the diet groups, it’s a tool that fits with their approach to making healthy eating easier.

“Today, we live in a world where despite our best intentions, it’s oftentimes very difficult on your own to make the healthy choice,” said David Burwick, president of Weight Watchers North America. “We all need to take more personal responsibility for our own weight and eating habits, but it helps to remember what a healthy portion size is in a world where super-size portions have become the norm.”

The proposal is set for a September 13 vote at the city Board of Health, whose members are appointed by Bloomberg. If approved, it would take effect as early as March. An opposition group called New Yorkers for Beverage Choices said it has the backing of more than 2,000 businesses and 201,000 people. A New York Times poll last month showed that six in 10 New Yorkers opposed the plan. The rule wouldn’t apply to lower-calorie drinks, such as water or diet soda, nor to alcoholic beverages or drinks that are more than half milk or 70 percent juice.

What do you think?  The happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic is on location in Central Park, New York City to find out people’s reactions to Mayor Michael Bloomberg‘s proposed Super Size Soda ban.

Jessica Simpson’s Body Isn’t Bouncing Back Like A Supermodel

September 5, 2012

Divabetic SummerJessica Simpson has resorted to slow-paced walks in her attempts to shed her baby weight as her bigger breasts prevent her from running.

The singer gave birth to a daughter named Maxwell in May, her first child with fiance Eric Johnson, and she subsequently signed up as the new spokesperson for the WeightWatchers diet plan to lose the excess pounds.

Simpson admits shaping up as a new mom has been more difficult than she imagined as her weight gain means she can’t do any strenuous exercise.

She tells USA Today, “I let myself indulge in everything I wanted because it was the first time I was ever pregnant, and I wanted to enjoy it. I wanted to be happy and eat what I wanted. I didn’t realize it (the weight) didn’t all come off with the baby…

“I’ve lost weight every single week. (I am) eating less of everything (but) I don’t believe in completely depriving yourself. … My boobs are way too big to run at this point. I’m just walking. … We take Maxwell out a lot.”

However, Simpson refuses to obsess about her waistline, adding, “My weight has always been something that people like to comment on. … Nobody wants to talk about their weight. For me, I have had to come to a place where I am comfortable with myself.

“I’m a mom now, and get to be a role model for this beautiful little girl. … I’m not a supermodel. My body is not bouncing back like a supermodel. I’m just your everyday woman who is trying to feel good and be healthy for her daughter, her fiancé and herself.”

Which Star Wore 4th Of July Outfit Best?

July 6, 2012

Divabetic Wack or WowThey’re different ages and all boast different styles. But Miley CyrusJessica SimpsonAlessandra Ambrosio and the Statue of Liberty do have at least one thing in common: they all like a good patriotic outfit.

Like Kate Middleton on Canada Day, the three Hollywood fixtures donned red and white patriotic outfits for the 4th of July. Jessica posed with her fiance Eric Johnson and their new baby girl, Maxwell Drew, against an unbelievably picturesque display of fireworks (seriously, was that Photoshopped?) wearing Wildfox Couture’s Seeing Stars Lennon sweater.

Earlier in the day, Alessandra stepped out with her new little one, Noah, wearing the same sweater, styled neatly with denim cutoffs and the sleeves rolled up. And leave it to Miley Cyrus to wear her Wildfox Couture sweater as a minidress, shrouding her teeny shorts and showing off her gams.

Three different stars all wrapped up in stars — so who wore it better?

What will you be wearing for that upcoming warm weather getaway, beach vacation, or just in general this summer? Let Divabetic help you decide. The happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic talks to Divabetic Image & Style Expert, Catherine Schuller about ‘Wack or Wow’ Summer Fashions at the 10th annual Big Apple Barbecue Block Party in New York City

NBC Reveals Designers for New ‘Fashion Star’ Reality TV Show

February 21, 2012

NBC recently revealed the identities of the 14 contestants who will compete on Fashion Star,  a new fashion TV reality competition series that will attempt to discover a fashion designer who can become America’s next popular brand and fashion icon.

Unlike Project Runway, which focuses on high-end women’s fashion, Fashion Star will target a variety of casual fashion including dresses, suits, lingerie, denim, bathing suits, shoes, and accessories. Viewers will have ability to purchase each week’s winning designs both online and in store the day after each episode airs.

Jessica Simpson, Macy’s Caprice Willard, Saks Fifth Avenue representative Terron E. Schaefer and H&M’s Nicole Christie will serve as the judges for the competition and vie for the right to purchase and exclusively carry the work of the up-and-coming designers each week.
