Divabetic Club Presents ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People With Diabetes’

January 12, 2012

Divabetic: 7 Habits Of Effective People Living With Diabetes

At our upcoming Divabetic Club – Philly meeting at Thomas University Hospital,  Thursday, January 19, 2012, 12 -1 PM, Neva White  CDE will be presenting the 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People Living with Diabetes’

The ‘7 Habits Of Highly Effective People Living with Diabetes’ were developed by Dr. Stephen Covey and the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE.)  Their goal is to teach people to begin with global principles of effective living and then use those principles to guide their responses to diabetes.

Dr. Stephen  Covey revolutionized business management with his seven principles of living life effectively. When his wife was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, he realized that his seven attitudes could help people living with diabetes to gain control of their lives. Together with the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE), he has created a booklet melding his seven management principles with the AADE’s seven self-care behaviors.

The first principle, “Be Proactive,” teaches us that although we have no control over what life brings us, our response to those circumstances is entirely within our control.

The second habit, “Begin With the End in Mind,” means that we need to articulate our ultimate purpose and then set goals that will lead to its achievement.

The third principle, “First Things First,” tells us to focus on what’s really important, not just urgent superficialities that do not further our mission.

Habit Four, “Think Win-Win,” involves creating positive energy when working effectively with our medical team and our loved ones.

Habit Five, “Seek First to Understand,” teaching us to really listen to others, allowing us to understand and then be understood by our healthcare team.

The sixth habit, “Synergize,” encourages finding a solution that is greater than the sum of the parts.

And the seventh habit, “Sharpen the Saw,” involves taking time to engage in activities that are physical, mental, spiritual, and social so we can see that we change our own lives.

Dr. Covey says that by incorporating the first three habits of self-management and personal leadership, the next three of interpersonal leadership, and the last habit of self-renewal, his wife transformed her diabetes from a negative into a positive for herself and their whole family.

It’s all about personal responsibility and integrity, he says. “The heart of the whole thing is finding meaning to your travails, to have some sense of purpose that drives you on. I’m going to find meaning in it, and I’m going to use it to bless not just my life, but other people’s lives.”

Divabetic Club – Philly: We Are Family!

June 16, 2011

Divabetic Club - Philly: We Are Family!

Our Divabetic – Club program, “Summertime Self-Care”,  was a sizzling hot success! The free program was held in the beautiful atrium of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia, PA.

Mr. Divabetic kicked things off with a sneak peek of his newest game video series, Totally Single. The game tests your ability to identify proper portion sizes  of popular food products. Our divas found out it’s not as easy as it seems to correctly guess at serving sizes in between burst of laughter.

‘Pass The Boa’ followed with inspiring testimonials from  guests  , co-hosted by Mr. Divabetic and  Neva White,  MSN,  CRNP, CDE.  We’re happy to report that many women and men have lost weight since February’s Divabetic Club – Philly meeting. One of our favorite moments came from a family’s testimonial. They came to our program to support a female relative living with type 1 diabetes in spite of the fact that she could not attend. Now that’s what we call SUPPORT!

Our first guest presenter, Johnetta Frazier,  showcased her  simply delicious summertime salad recipe for Kale  during our healthy cooking demonstration. Then, she served guests a fabulous  healthy lunch featuring kale salad, whole wheat pasta salad, a fresh fruit cup and a slice of ‘Heaven’ (a low-calore strawberry shortcake.) Johnetta promised to share the above recipes with the Diva Blog.

Dr. Zinszer , a podiatrist, spoke to us about Summertime Footcare. She offered friendly advice on safe pedicures,  fashionable diabetes-friendly shoe shopping,  and the lowdown foot lotions.

Thanks to Cabot Cheese, Dr. Scholl’s, Crystal Light, VitaZest, ADA ACCU-CHEK for the free giveaways and product samples.
