Good Nutrition Through All Phases of Cancer by David Haas

April 21, 2013
Serve, Taste or Trash! Game

Serve, Taste or Trash! Game

Cancer patients have different nutrition needs than the general public. When people have cancer, they must eat enough food to maintain their strength and energy. Good nutrition helps them fight their illness and the side effects of treatment.

Unfortunately, cancer makes healthy eating difficult for most people. Chemotherapy, radiation and other therapies are aggressive in their fight against cancer cells. Along the way, these treatments also damage healthy cells and cause debilitating side effects. Many of them involve diet and appetite

Good nutrition is i.mportant during all phases of cancer, from diagnosis and treatment to recovery. The foods that are recommended for cancer patients, however, are not always the same as those advised for healthy people. Patients should talk to their doctors or dietitians about their special nutrition needs.

Before Cancer Treatment

Most cancer patients consider diet and nutrition in relation to cancer treatment. However, good nutrition starts before treatment. The benefits of nutrition for cancer prevention are well documented. Many vitamins, minerals and other nutrients have amazing anti-cancer effects.

According to the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR), diets that are filled with fruits, vegetables and whole grains may lower the risk of certain types of cancer. From vitamins and minerals to fiber and antioxidants, these foods have numerous cancer-fighting properties.

During Cancer Treatment

Good nutrition is especially important during cancer treatment. Certain treatments cause side effects that make eating difficult. This can make it extremely hard to get adequate nourishment, especially for those who are dealing with mesothelioma treatment side effects and other advanced cancers.

Among the common eating problems associated with cancer treatment are nausea, vomiting, appetite loss, constipation, diarrhea, mouth sores, dry mouth, sore throat and lactose intolerance. Some patients gain weight during treatment, while others lose too much weight.

Fortunately, many side effects can be controlled. Not everyone has eating problems during cancer treatment, but those who do can take medicines to cope. Doctors and dietitians can work with patients to help them find palatable, nutritious foods. According to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), patients should eat as much protein and calories as possible.

After Cancer Treatment

Nutrition needs do not end when the cancer treatment ends, but the needs may change over time. A good cancer recovery diet provides important nutrients during cancer treatment and beyond. Research shows that good nutrition and exercise prevents cancer recurrence and promotes lifelong health.

Diets that are rich in fruits and vegetables and sparse in animal fat have been shown to lower the recurrence rates for breast, colon and stomach cancer. Antioxidants like beta-carotene and vitamins A, C and E protect the body from free radicals that are linked to cancer and aging.

On another note, overweight is a risk factor for many types of cancer. It increases the chance of recurrence and lowers the survival odds. Diets that are high in fruits, vegetables and whole grains and low in animal protein and fat promote weight loss and overall healthier living.

Pack your plate with foods containing vitamin E (in sunflower seeds and almonds) to help keep skin hydrated. Breakfast is a great time to incorporate sunflower seeds into your diet. Simply add a few tablespoons to granola or hot cereal, or spread sunflower seed butter, a delicate, sweet alternative to peanut butter, on toast.

For lunch and dinner, sunflower seeds make an easy, natural addition to a salad.

Whole Grain Food Labels Are Misleading

March 18, 2013

Current standards for classifying foods as “whole grain” are inconsistent and, in some instances, misleading, according to a new study released by the Harvard School of Public Health.

Researchers found that grain products with the Whole Grain Stamp, a widely-used front-of-package symbol, were higher in fiber and lower in trans fats, but also contained significantly more sugar and calories compared to products without the Stamp.

Carb Kitty Game Video debuts on dLifeTV

February 18, 2013
Carb Kitty - Meow with a wow!

Carb Kitty – Meow with a wow!

Last night dLifeTV  aired the first Carb Kitty video game in one of their episodes. Can we say, ‘MEOW with a WOW!’??

The Carb Kitty video game series was inspired by a mother of child living with type 1 diabetes who attended the Taking Control Of Your Diabetes (TCOYD) Conference & Health Fair in Tampa, FL. She asked me to create a video game about ‘carb counting.’ It’s exciting to share these videos with the dLifeTV community. I’m now working on developing Carb Kitty into diabetes app.

The goal of the videos is to spark interest in learning more about carbohydrate counting with a registered dietitian.  I want to thank Dr. Steve Edelman and the wonderful TCOYD team for inviting me to Tampa!

Eight years ago, dLifeTV launched the first ever television broadcast show bringing diabetes education and inspiration right into your home every Sunday. Hundreds of stories later, thousands of lives changed, dLife continues to bring you entertaining diabetes education, but now through a new channel—online.  It will be the same great show, same time, just in a different place.

GUESS WHAT? I started Divabetic in the basement of the dLife studios when they had live audiences eight years ago. I volunteered to entertain the studio audience prior to the tapings with Mama Rose Marie and Stan the Announcer Man. We had an incredible time working together with Howard and the team to create an entertaining and informative approach to diabetes education. It was at these tapings that I met two of the most fabulous ‘Divabetics’:  Mother Love and Nicole Johnson.

So tune in Sundays at 7pm ET / 4pm PT at www.dLifeTV.com for all new shows each week with the same people you know and love. You’ll find Jim Turner’s takes on life with diabetes in only the way he can; stories from real people struggling and achieving with diabetes just like you; and cooking tips from chef Michel Nischan in the dLife Kitchen.

Next Carb Kitty air dates are:  March 3, March 10 and March 17, 2013.

Wednesday’s World Premiere Video: Serve, Taste or Trash!

Serve Taste or Trash

Mr. Divabetic’s food game

The happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic plays his nutrition game, Serve, Taste or Trash! with the vendors and patrons at Central Farm Market in Bethesda, MD.#centralfarmmarket

You might be surprised by the results. In the game, you’re given three choices of fruits and vegetables. You must decide which one you’d serve, which one you’d taste and which one you’d trash. Before you decide to “trash” a veggie for good, why not try to eat it raw? Raw veggies can be more appetizing than their cooked counterparts to people who aren’t crazy about vegetables. The flavors of raw veggies can be milder than those of cooked ones. And the texture is crispy, rather than mushy. Special guest, Kathy Gold RN, MSN, CDE, Director of Outreach and Education at the Diabetes Research & Wellness Foundation in Washington, DC helped to raise awareness for diabetes in a fun and glamorous new way. Original music by Douglas Clay: www.douglasclaymusic.com

Go Ahead, Smash Your Food This Thanksgiving!

November 25, 2012

DivabeticGetting kids to understand the connection between their diet, nutrition, and health at an early age can help them establish healthy habits for life, and this free iOS app just might be cool enough to motivate them to learn more about the foods they choose.

Smash Your Food is a free iPhone and iPad app from Food N’ Me that aims to help children learn about the amounts of salt, oil, and sugar in the “most commonly abused” foods. And it isn’t presenting it to them in a totally boring manner, because the app works not by instructing directly, but by letting the kids try to guess the amounts, and then showing them in a very graphic manner just what that looks like:

Watch your kids SMASH a burger, CRUSH a milkshake, DEMOLISH a soda and POUND a pizza! Smash Your Food invites players to test their knowledge of the sugar, fat and oil content in commonly abused foods, then watch it get smashed – literally!

Choose from a variety of fridges featuring Messy Breakfast, Mushy Mess or complete the holiday themed fridge to watch a carved pumpkin get squished. As players correctly guess the content in each item, new achievements are completed and tokens in the form of golden carrots are earned. With the right amount of carrots, players can then unlock additional fridges and become a legendary smasher. Along the way, learn valuable tips about alternate food choices and accept challenges to have a healthier lifestyle. Smash Your Food proves that playing with your food is not only fun but educational as well!
