Mayor Bloomberg’s Daughter Isn’t Fan Of Soda Ban

June 10, 2012

This month, news that Mayor Bloomberg was out to slay Big Bad Obesity with his proposed soda ban was the proverbial shot heard around the world, with everyone from Michelle Obama to Jerry Seinfeld weighing in on the move against sugary drinks. But Bloomberg’s newest critic might hit a little closer to home.

This week, Georgina Bloomberg, the Mayor’s 29-year-old daughter and featured player in the 2003 HBO documentary Born Rich, bumped into NY Mag at a cocktail party and told them she wasn’t a huge fan of her dad’s newest venture. “His intentions are good. And, it’s the kind of thing that the public will thank him for in twenty years,” she said of the ban, which would prohibit restaurants, cafes and movie theaters from selling sugary drinks in quantities over 16 ounces. “However, people should be allowed to make their own bad choices.”

The younger Bloomberg, said that her favorite soft drink is sugar-free Fresca, offered her own solution to the city’s growing obesity problem, suggesting her father make healthy food more accessible to New Yorkers rather than cutting out fattier options. “Ideally, he would lower the cost of healthy food instead of banning unhealthy food,” she said. “If people were able to afford to eat nutritious food, I think they would make better choices.”

A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll noted that the majority of Americans disagree with the Mayor’s proposed ban, with nearly 64 percent of those surveyed believing the ban was an unnecessary government intervention.

Michelle Obama Praises NYC Soda Ban

June 5, 2012

First lady Michelle Obama says banning big servings of sugary drinks isn’t anything she’d want to do at the federal level, but she offered some kind words for New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s effort to do just that. She later issued a statement backing away from taking a stand on New York’s controversial proposed ban.

It was a telling example of the fine line the first lady walks as she tries to improve Americans’ health and eating habits without provoking complaints that she’s part of any “nanny state” telling people how to eat or raise their children.

Asked about Bloomberg’s proposal during an interview with The Associated Press, Mrs. Obama said there’s no “one-size-fits-all” solution for the country’s health challenges. But she said, “We applaud anyone who’s stepping up to think about what changes work in their communities. New York is one example.”

And asked whether the nation’s obesity epidemic warrants taking a more aggressive approach, such as Bloomberg’s, she said: “There are people like Mayor Bloomberg who are, and that is perfectly fine.”

Mrs. Obama later issued a statement saying that she hadn’t intended to weigh in on the Bloomberg plan “one way or the other.”

“I was trying to make the point that every community is different and every solution is different and that I applaud local leaders including mayors, business leaders, parents, etc., who are taking this issue seriously and working towards solving this problem.”

“But this is not something the administration is pursuing at a federal level and not something I’m specifically endorsing or condemning.”
