The happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic plays Serve, Taste or Trash! Food Game at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York.
The Apollo Theater is a national icon with a legacy that resonates across generations, ethnic groups and continents. Since opening its doors in 1914 and introducing the first Amateur Night contests in 1934, the Apollo Theater has played a major role in the emergence of innovative musical genres including jazz, swing, bebop, R&B, gospel blues and soul. Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holiday, Sammy Davis Jr., James Brown, Bill Cosby, Gladys Knight, Luther Vandross, D’Angelo, Lauryn Hill and countless others began their road to stardom in the Apollo stage.
Mr. Divabetic talks to Billy Mitchell, the resident historian and official tour guide for the Apollo Theater about some of the little known facts about the theater and the legendary people who performed there.
The new documentary, Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf’s takes its title from one of Victoria Roberts’ ladies-who-lunch cartoons for the New Yorker. This fashion documentary by Matthew Miele is an unabashed valentine to a Manhattan specialty store.
A film that really looks at the inner mechanics of a major retail establishment could be engrossing, but Miele is more interested in the sales-floor fabulous than the nuts and bolts. He jumps past the basics of the family enterprise’s history, offering little about the people who built the store except the Goodmans’ longtime occupancy of a penthouse apartment above the store, which itself occupies the former site of the Cornelius Vanderbilt mansion.
The documentary features more than a hundred interviewees, all gushing — designers, journalists and a whole slew of famous shoppers like Joan Rivers, Susan Lucci and the Olsen twins.
The film’s three main characters are high-level Bergdorf employees: fashion director Linda Fargo; personal shopper to the rich and famous Betty Halbreich, all but stealing the show with her withering looks and dry remarks; and David Hoey, who oversees the store’s elaborately set-designed windows, with their hallucinatory fantasy scenes.
The happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic stopped by the Bike Expo New York (BE NY) to play his food game, Serve, Taste or Trash! In the game, you’re given three choices of popular drinks. You must decide which one you’d serve, which one you’d taste and which one you’d trash. The goal of the game is to challenge people’s Nutrition IQ about some of their favorite drink choices.
Bike Expo New York hosted more than 90 exhibitors representing the best brands and organizations in biking, including Raleigh, Specialized, Fuji, Cannondale, Shimano, and People for Bikes. Local brands were also represented with companies such as Vespertine, Rolling Orange, Montecci and many more.
What do you reach for to quench your thirst when you go for a bike ride? Most of us feel challenged to drink the recommended 8 glasses of water each day to stay healthy which is probably why there are so many beverages that mention “water” in their title. Just mentioning water in advertising makes us think of we’re drinking ‘water’ but are these beverages really worth it?
One of the choices featured in the Bike Expo’s Serve, Taste or Trash! Game is Vitamin Water Zero. Vitamin Water Zero contains erythritol, which is a a special type of carbohydrate called a sugar alcohol. Sugar alcohols typically only contain about two calories per gram of carbohydrate, but erythritol contains only 0.24 calories per gram, and labeling regulations in the US say that this can count as zero calories.
As far as the vitamin supplementation that one can get through these products – you should eat a variety of vegetables, some fruit, and a variety of protein sources to get all the vitamin C, B-vitamins, etc that your body needs to function.
Gitanjali Singh of Harvard University and colleagues examined survey data covering 60 per cent of the world’s population to get a global picture of the consumption of beverages with added sugar. They worked out the obesity rates resulting from sugary drink consumption and looked at the number of deaths from obesity-related diseases to calculate that 184,000 deaths each year could be associated with sugary beverages – about the same number as are killed globally each year by asthma.
Diabetes accounted for about 70 per cent of these deaths; heart disease and certain cancers accounted for the rest.
The study only shows an association between deaths and sugary drinks, butRachel Johnson at the University of Vermont in Burlington says that the idea of a real link is biologically plausible.
“The cost of treating these diseases is going to crush our healthcare system,” says Johnson.

Bonnie Sher sings, dances, lights up the stage and holds the room in her hands. And why not, she learned from the master himself – the late Sammy Davis, Jr. For many years, Bonnie had the good fortune to be the protégé of the late Sammy Davis, Jr., which provided her with the incredible opportunity of working clubs & engagements around the world for over twenty years, until his death.
Bonnie Sher is no stranger to the stage, starting her career as a child touring in The Sound of Music with Theodore Bikel & Florence Henderson. The old Cotton Club was the venue for High Tea, an acclaimed Off-Broadway musical in which she starred opposite of legendary Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Famer, LaVern Baker. Bonnie made her television debut as a teen on “The Barbara McNair Show” & continued to work on several TV shows including a role opposite Billy Crystal on “Soap,” while training with comedy legend Phil Foster.
Bonnie began her recording career under the wings of songwriting pair, the Late Jack Keller (“Venus in Blue Jeans,” “Everybody’s Somebody’s Fool”) & the Late Bob Russell (“Crazy He Calls Me,” “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore”) who wrote two songs for her, “Façade” & “It’ll Break Your Heart.” Both songs were recorded & featured in motion pictures . She also starred in Arch Oboler’s recently re-released 3-D cult film, Domo Arigato.
In addition to her work as a singer, actress & recording artist, Bonnie has always found time to work for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation as a spokesperson & has served on the Board of Directors of Calvary Hospital Golf & Tennis Classic Benefit for their cancer hospice. She was also the Program Director for Hearts & Voices, a volunteer organization that provided musical entertainment for AIDS patients in seven New York City Hospitals.
On Sunday, April 14th at 3pm, Bonnie Sher will grace the stage at Stage 72 at Triad, sharing her magical voice. MOMENTS is Bonnie’s celebration of four decades in TV, film, stage & recording. Her band is pretty magical, too, with Musical Director Mario Sprouse on piano, Ratzo Harris on bass, Marshal Rosenberg on percussion & Grammy Award-winner, Wayne Cobham on trumpet.

The happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic heads to the New York International Auto Show, North America’s first and largest attended auto show featuring 1,000 vehicles plus the latest in tech, safety and innovation today.
The happy healthcare host plans to play his fun, food game, Serve, Taste or Trash! with attendees as well as raise awareness of the necessary precautions people living with diabetes should take before getting behind the wheel.
Sudden bouts of low blood sugar, or hypoglycemia, can lead to confusion, delayed reaction, visual disturbances or loss of consciousness when driving. Even in the absence of low blood sugar, people with diabetes may have impaired vision or nerve function in the feet, which can affect driving.
Partly as a result, drivers with diabetes are 12 percent to 19 percent more likely than other drivers to have a car accident, studies show.
Max ‘Mr. Divabetic’ Szadek
A study of 202 people with diabetes who were taking insulin found that about 60 percent of participants never tested their blood glucose levels before driving. Most participants said they would stop driving if they began to feel symptoms of hypoglycemia, but it can be difficult to recognize milder symptoms, such as blurry vision, sweating or feeling tired or irritable, said Dr. Daniel Lorber, director of endocrinology at New York Hospital Queens.
“If it drops further, then you get into some severe thinking and judgment issues, and that’s what we’re concerned about,” he said. “You could pass out or have a seizure.”
While most accidents related to diabetes complications happen to a small group of people with Type 1 diabetes, who need to take insulin, people with Type 2 diabetes are also at risk.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg called for legislation to make New York the first U.S. city to require stores to conceal tobacco products, a week after a court struck down his ban on the sale of large sugary beverages.
Bloomberg’s latest health initiative would mandate that tobacco products such as cigarettes be kept in cabinets, drawers, under the counter, behind a curtain or in any other concealed location. It wouldn’t pertain to advertising, leading a spokesman for the state’s convenience stores to question its logic and effectiveness.
“New York City has dramatically lowered our smoking rate, but even one new smoker is one too many,” Bloomberg, 71, said at a press briefing today at a Queens hospital, according to a statement. “Young people are targets of marketing, and the availability of cigarettes and this legislation will help prevent another generation from the ill health and shorter life expectancy that comes with smoking.”

My 11-year-old son likes treats. There is a container of red licorice on the table I have to resist whenever I enter the kitchen to grab an apple.
