Hungry Grocery Shoppers Buy More Junk Food

May 18, 2013

Grocery shopping while hungry can lead to out of control snacking and an entire week’s worth of unhealthy eating according to new research from Cornell University.

The Cornell researchers followed 68 shoppers as they clicked through an online grocery site that offered a mix of healthy choices — including fruits, vegetables and lean meats — and unhealthy, high calorie snack foods like candy, chips and soda.

The shoppers who didn’t eat for four to five hours before filling their virtual food baskets bought the same number of items as the shoppers who snacked on crackers before clicking away. But the hungry shoppers selected more processed junk foods, 23 percent more on average. A follow up field test where researchers secretly followed shoppers who hadn’t eaten for several hours found much the same.

“You don’t buy more, but you do buy more of the wrong type of calories,” noted Brian Wansink, one of the study’s lead investigators and author of the new book, Slim By Design. “You buy things like cereal, snacks, chips, candy and other convenience foods that require no preparation and that you can eat right away.”

Previous research demonstrated that fasting for up to 18 hours can drive shoppers to make less diet-friendly choices and spend more cash overall. But this is the first study to show you don’t have to be terribly hungry for your judgment to be affected.

Even just a few hours without eating is enough to send you in search of a quick fix to satisfy hunger. And, as Wansink noted, this is often the state shoppers find themselves in as they rush to the market after a long day of work.

Unfortunately, the effect goes well beyond buying a candy bar to tide you over on the drive home, Wansink said. Shoppers who impulsively purchase ready-to-eat, low nutrition foods set themselves up for repeated diet disasters because they fill their pantries with junk instead of healthier fare.

“It ends up cursing the rest of your week because you bought way too much of the convenience foods and not enough of the good stuff. So now there is less healthy food for you to choose from at home.”

Americans seem to be snacking more than ever. On average, Americans enjoy 2.3 snacks per day according to the latest poll by the Hartman Group. Nearly 30 percent of people said they snack impulsively while another 17 percent reach for a snack when they don’t feel like cooking. Almost 60 percent of respondents said choosing a healthy snack is important to them, yet the two most popular snacks choices are chips and soda.

Wansink said the obvious moral here is don’t shop hungry.

“It helps to plan your visit to the supermarket and if you’re hungry, eat an apple before you go,” he said.

Do You Agree with Kirstie Alley?

Kirstie Alley slammed Abercrombie honcho Michael Jeffries this week for why the clothing retailer refuses to stock items in sizes larger than, well, large.

In short, the company wants only cool kids coming through its doors.

The onetime “Fat Actress” star, who has openly dealt with her weight issues over the years, went on “Entertainment Tonight,” video above, to encourage folks of all sizes to stop shopping at A&F.

“I’ve got two kids in that [target] bracket, but they will never walk in those doors because of his view of people — forget women, his view of just people,” she said.

The dust-up started with a May 3 Business Insider story about Abercrombie, unlike its prime competitors, refusing to stock clothes in XL and XXL. The story resurfaced comments made by Jeffries to Salon in 2006, in which he said his business was built on sex appeal and therefore “we want to market to cool, good-looking people. We don’t market to anyone other than that.”

“In every school there are the cool and popular kids, and then there are the not-so-cool kids,” he continued in the quote that went viral. “Candidly, we go after the cool kids. We go after the attractive all-American kid with a great attitude and a lot of friends. A lot of people don’t belong [in our clothes], and they can’t belong. Are we exclusionary? Absolutely.”

The Abercrombie chief exec finally addressed the issue Thursday in a statement that stopped short of an apology, according to Money & Co. He said he regretted that his “choice of words was interpreted in a manner that has caused offense,” stating that the “7-year-old, resurrected quote has been taken out of context.”

Nevertheless, A&F “targets its marketing at a particular segment of customers,” he said, adding that the company was opposed to discrimination and bullying based on “race, gender, body type or other individual characteristics.”

(We’re guessing Alley’s huge-head comment would fall in that last category.)

Incidentally, the retailer’s reputation among 18- to 34-year-olds has tanked in the last two weeks, Business Insider reported Thursday.

Why Do Baked Potato Chips Contain Sugar?

May 9, 2013

Divabetic

What? Baked potato chips contain sugar?!!!!

Okay, we get that they’re considered to be a healthier option than the deep fried variety because baked potato chips don’t contain nearly as much fat or calories as the fried version but we’re still scratching our heads over the hidden added sugar content.

Lays Baked Southwestern Ranch Potato Chips contain corn starch, sugar, and corn sugar which are sweeteners in a product that is supposed to be about salt. Corn sugar is high-fructose corn syrup, and Frito-Lay, maker of Baked Lays, has been able to get away with the name change for some time, even though it wasn’t approved.

Baked Lays also tend to have less calories and fat as the fried variety, but do still contain a considerable amount of fat and sodium.

Regular potato chips, the simple kinds, have real potatoes, oil, and salt. Baked Lays have dried potatoes, corn starch, sugar, corn oil, salt, soy lecithin, and corn sugar. Which one would you eat?

The findings agree with earlier studies in the United States, which found daily soda consumption increased the risk of Type 2 diabetes by 25 percent.

Residents of East and Central Harlem are more likely to drink sugary drinks, and to drink 4 or more sugary drinks daily, than are residents in other New York City neighborhoods according to the New York City Health Department’s annual Community Health Survey.

Mr. Divabetic’s new Serve, Taste or Trash! Food Game (coming soon on YouTube) features three popular sugar sweetened beverages near the Apollo Theater to help everyday people better understand of the relationship between consumption of sugary drinks and diabetes.

How Soda Kills 184,000 People Each Year

April 20, 2013

image001New York City’s controversial ban on large soda drinks may have been blocked  but a  new study suggests around 184,000 global deaths a year can be linked to sugary drinks.

Gitanjali Singh of Harvard University and colleagues examined survey data covering 60 per cent of the world’s population to get a global picture of the consumption of beverages with added sugar. They worked out the obesity rates resulting from sugary drink consumption and looked at the number of deaths from obesity-related diseases to calculate that 184,000 deaths each year could be associated with sugary beverages – about the same number as are killed globally each year by asthma.

Diabetes accounted for about 70 per cent of these deaths; heart disease and certain cancers accounted for the rest.

The study only shows an association between deaths and sugary drinks, butRachel Johnson at the University of Vermont in Burlington says that the idea of a real link is biologically plausible.

“The cost of treating these diseases is going to crush our healthcare system,” says Johnson.

The study was presented today at the American Heart Association’s conference on Epidemiology and Prevention, Nutrition, Physical Activity & Metabolism, in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Why Can’t Americans Lose Weight?

April 12, 2013
Fat Letters

Fat Letters

American children and adults are eating fewer calories, yet obesity rates haven’t improved, according to a series of recent reports from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That means it’s going to take more than counting calories for the country to slim down.

Americans may simply be eating the wrong types of calories. It’s important to focus on where your calories are coming from, and fill your diet with minimally processed plant-based foods as much as possible. Cutting out soda and other sugar-sweetened drinks can also make a big difference.

“I would recommend that people follow dietary guidelines, which means eating a healthy diet,” said Bethene Ervin, PhD, a nutritional epidemiologist with the National Center for Health Statistics at the CDC. “This includes limiting fat intake and consuming lots of fruits and vegetables. That would be the best way to beat obesity.”

Remember that it’s not a matter of giving up your favorite foods. It’s about eating wisely. When it comes to a healthy diet, make sure that every calorie counts.

What Can I Have for Dessert?

April 4, 2013
Susan Weiner RD, CDE

Susan Weiner RD, CDE

Has a family member or friend scolded you for your choice of dessert? Have you ever attended a family holiday party where Aunt Matilda or Uncle Henry loudly announced “your diabetic, you can’t eat that piece of cheesecake”?

March’s Diabetes Roundtable guest educator, Susan Weiner RD, MS, CDE, CDN offers this ‘diva’ advice:

The truth is: YOU can have some dessert if you have diabetes. You are in control of your food choices and your diabetes management. So, while relatives and friends might be well meaning with their advice, they might be way off-target, especially when you didn’t ask for it!

Your blood sugar level may be affected by the food you eat and by the total amount of carbohydrate that you eat. So, if you eat a meal or dessert that contains a large amount of carbohydrate, your blood sugar will most probably go up. If you eat more fiber with your meal, snack or dessert, your blood sugar might rise at a slower rate or might not become as elevated. Exercise and stress also can affect your blood sugar!

If you are in the mood for a dessert, Susan’s advice is to have it and enjoy it. Just remember to always test your blood sugar. Test as often as necessary! If your blood sugar is high, you might decide to hold off on that piece of cake until you’re back into target range. If you are with a friend, consider splitting a high-carb dessert. Or, if you just want a taste, take a spoon off your friends’ plate. Sometimes just a fork-fill can satisfy your craving. Whatever you decide to do, it’s TOTALLY your choice.

Do You Have A ‘Never Too Much’ Attitude About Food?

April 3, 2013
Divabetic - Luther Vandross

Divabetic – Luther Vandross

Divabetic salutes R & B legend, Luther Vandross all month long with podcasts celebrating his music and raising awareness for diabetes and eating issues. On last night’s podcast, Serve, Taste or Trash! Food Game,  guest Ginger Vieira provided advice on binge-eating.

Binge eating is a serious eating disorder in which you frequently consume unusually large amounts of food. Almost everyone overeats on occasion, such as having seconds or thirds of a holiday meal. But for some people, overeating crosses the line to binge-eating disorder and it becomes a regular occurrence, usually done in secret.

When you have binge-eating disorder, you may be deeply embarrassed about gorging and vow to stop. But you feel such a compulsion that you can’t resist the urges and continue binge eating. If you have binge-eating disorder, treatment can help.

A person with binge-eating disorder can become an expert at hiding behavior, making it hard for others to detect the problem. If you have a loved one you think may have symptoms of binge-eating disorder, have an open and honest discussion about your concerns. You can offer encouragement and support and help your loved one find a qualified doctor or mental health provider and make an appointment. You may even offer to go along.

Are Eggs ealthy or Unhealthy?

April 1, 2013
Divabetic

Divabetic

A recent study shows that egg consumption had no effect on the overall blood cholesterol levels of 115 healthy adults. What’s more, another recent study found some evidence that eating whole eggs increases HDL — the heart-protective, “good” cholesterol.

“There are much bigger problems in the American diet than cholesterol,” says Drew Ramsey, M.D. an assistant clinical professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, who studies the connection between lifestyle behaviors like diet and psychological health. “There’s not data to suggest that it should be at the top of people’s worries about food choices. Everyone’s in agreement about that: The real problem with diabetes and obesity is eating too much processed food.”

And there are several nutrients specific to the egg yolk that help promote overall health. Egg yolks are one of the richest dietary sources of the B-complex vitamin choline, which is associated with better neurological function and reduced inflammation. There’s also evidence that dietary choline helps with fetal brain development when pregnant women eat it. Another side benefit of a diet rich in choline is, well, happiness.
