The happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic visited SUNY Downstate Medical Center to play his food game, Serve Taste or Trash! Game with healthcare providers, staff members, medical students and patients. SUNY Downstate Medical Center is one of the nation’s leading urban medical centers, serving the people of Brooklyn since 1860.
Mr. Divabetic’s Serve, Taste or Trash! Game aims to encourage kids of all ages to become more open-minded eaters. Each game features three different food and/or beverage choices. To play you must decide which choice you’d serve, which choice you’d taste and which one you’d trash.
How many calories are your drinking? Today’s Serve, Taste or Trash! Game challenge features Coca Cola, Poland Springs Water and Brooklyn Summer Ale. Mr. Divabetic with special guest divabetic, Lorraine Brooks tested each player’s ‘Beverage IQ’ with questions ranging from how alcohol affects your blood sugars to the number of cans of soda a day it takes to elevate your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. In addition, Downstate Medical healthcare providers and staff members offered their suggestions on how to increase your daily water intake.
Did you know? A new study indicates that drinking one or more cans of soda a day can increase one’s risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. One in five were at elevated risk of diabetes with as little as one can per day according to statistics published in the journal Diabetologia.
Meet Thomas Moore, our special guest ‘DUDE’ on the upcoming Diabetes Roundtable Inspired by Melba Moore scheduled for Tuesday, March 12, 2013, 6 – 7 PM, EST.
Thomas shares his ‘Diagnosis to Dude’ story and the reason why he prefers to wear blue shoes.
Diagnosis To Diva/Dude Story: When diabetes first entered my life, it was a very limited exposure with my Wife’s Grandmother. About all I knew then was that there was insulin in the fridge. Fast forward to 1993 when my Wife was diagnosed Type 2 and was put on metformin. Backing up for one second, it is worth noting that the comorbidity that has been the most troublesome of them all, DPN, was diagnosed BEFORE the diabetes diagnosis. A few short years later, about 1996, there was a bad episode of a Foot Ulcer that sent us to the ER, where her BGL was at 680. She was put on insulin right away, the Ulcer eventually was well enough to go home, and the only thing in the discharge orders about Insulin, was a reference to something called the “Sliding Scale”. I’d had enough of not knowing enough, and shortly thereafter I started poking around the Internet for information, and found the beginnings of what we now call the Diabetes Online community (DOC).
That did a number of things for me, most notably I found out I didn’t know crap about how to best manage diabetes, for my Wife, and found out just how deadly this D thing can be. I went into Programmer mode driving me to search out and find out every single minute thing associated. If I cannot completely understand something from top to bottom…start to finish, I couldn’t write Code.
Then a number of wonderfully snowballing events happened, where I was now not just another person trying to cope and learn, I was at that point an Advocate now. I had a sense of duty, I felt the urgent need to help teach & learn as much as possible, as I met amazing people along the way urging me to be my best at doing so, as I had always tried to do. Always trying sums it up, and is also my first and most popular Twitter handle. Then something happened out of the blue…
I was now not just a Caregiver/Advocate, I was on the other side of the table. I was now looking at being a Patient, pre-diabetic, among other issues. When I got that Pre-D diagnosis I crossed over a line, I was now a person that had to practice what I have learned…on me. My Family and many friends acted like I was given a Dx of the most deadly thing in the world. How could *I*, the one who had been fighting the good fight FOR diabetics, now included ME.
THIS, is the point in time when along with the other recently uncovered medical issues I am facing, I realized how serious the Patient side of the table can be, how scary it can be…I realized I am not special, I am not alone, I am surrounded by love…I will keep on keeping on!
Biggest Self-Care Issue or Concern: To remember to take care of *ME* or else I can’t take care of anyone else.
Special members of healthcare entourage: I have many, but first and foremost is my Family…Wife/Kids/Grandkids etc. and my ‘new’ G.P. who is an ambitious YOUNG lad (half my age I am sure). Even though I am technically considered my Wife’s D Caregiver, she certainly takes more care of me, her Dad (Lives with us going on twenty years!), and kids/grandkids. Hands down, the mental motivation and caring from a close Family is the biggest asset to my positive journey for healthcare…and SELF-CARE. Last but not least is my fellow Team members at Blue Heel Society (BHS) & Tony Cervati at Type1Rider.org (T1R), without them, the journey would be difficult. They are truly Family to me as well…
Blue Heel Society
Diabetes Organizations You’re Affiliated With: Let me talk about Blue Heel Society: We founded this society to change the way people saw this disease….Diabetes. We want the world to know…..if you live with, love, or care for someone with diabetes, regardless of the type….you are fabulous! We wear that Blue Shoe in good blood sugars….and in *bad*.
We advocate for anyone affected by diabetes. We don’t sugar coat it….unless it matches the shoes. We promote awareness about diabetes and education. One step at a time. We encourage anyone to do the same…..in the style they see fit. We support all efforts by the community to change how people see diabetes. Walking the walk…so they say.
We choose to stand up, be seen, and be heard in our Blue Heels.” So we are really saying in both arenas (BHS & T1R) that everyone affected by living ‘la vida D’ can do so no matter what, do so in BLUE Style, and do so everywhere/anywhere you may go. Doesn’t have to be a diabetes related environment nor have anything to do with the D. We just do so in blue shoes, and are proud to tell you *WHY* we wear them
It has amazed me that the positive nature of our communities have prospered so well, we RARELY even mention the word “diabetes”…it is implied and we know & respect that.
I have also had the honor of being involved in some amazing Projects, one being helping Amy Ermel, creator of “Diabetic Barbie”, as they have grown the simple idea of being able to help a little girl or boy feel they have a playmate that is just like them.
Favorite Diabetes Resource: I would have to say the DOC. If it was not because of the DOC, I wouldn’t have the opportunity to be involved. ANY/EVERY situation can be presented, even life saving efforts, by the DOC and right away there are people ready and willing to help.
Favorite Celebrity Diva/Dude: I again am reminded of a special element of the DOC, true Celebrity Diva’s and Dude’s for sure…Parents of children with diabetes, particularly single Parents. These hero’s always have a special Spotlight shining on them that is only reserved for the biggest Celeb’s around!
Favorite Movie: “Groundhog Day” and Favorite TV Show: “How It’s Made”
Favorite Song: I have SO many, however, I have a new’ish one titled “Overwhelmed” by Tim McMorris, that I really can’t get out of my head
Motivating Mindset: My journey living with diabetes has been interesting to say the least, as I have recently been transitioning from Caregiver to Patient. I must also say that I cannot remember any other time in my life that I am GLAD that we endure living la vida D in this day and age. Finding the DOC has been a soothing bonus that most importantly reminds us daily that we are not alone in this journey. It isn’t all doom and gloom.
For any new diagnosis it is paramount to find someone in the same set of situations with your Health, and embrace any/every chance you get to travel the road together at the beginning, and work towards common goals.
Don’t be overwhelmed by numbers, statistics, research and data. But also know that in my mind we are as on the verge of that ever elusive “CURE”, than we have ever been. I peruse, and have for some time, a plethora of Articles and News stories. More specifically “Cure Based Research” when it relates to actual studies currently underway. The pieces and parts that have been a result of past Research has shown us a lot of what has perhaps “CAUSED” diabetes and related comorbiditys, as until we understand what actually ‘Causes’ these issues, we certainly can not prevent it either.
Be aware that there are bumps in the road. Be more aware that there are many folks out there in DOC land, such as Divabetic, that can help show you the way around those bumps, as we get that much closer to living better day by day.
Thomas Moore’s Motto: The Glass is ALWAYS Full…A scientific fact

Wake up and smell the sugar. Oops, I mean the ‘coffee.’ How much sugar do you pour into your morning cup of coffee? If you stop by your local Dunkin Donuts (where America really runs on ‘sugar’ not ‘Dunkin’) you’ll see that there’s plenty of grown folk asking the friendly counter people to add 8 to 9 teaspoons of sugar to their coffee. This might sound way too sweet to you until you realize that there’s over 78 teaspoons of sugar in Coffee-mate French Vanilla 32 fl oz container. It doesn’t even seem like its possible to fit 78 teaspoons of sugar into the container! I use Coffee-mate on a daily basis and I was in shock when I found out how much sugar is in a container.
Coffee-mate describes their product as deliciously creamy, with a classic vanilla taste that’s perfect anytime. Their Coffee Creamer is free of cholesterol, lactose, trans fat and gluten with all of the flavor and no clumping, so you can up the taste simply and healthily.
When you get a mug of black coffee, how many sugar packets and creamers do you pour inside? And what’s the alternative?
For most people who add what they love to call a ‘healthy’ amount of sugar (4-5 packets) they might want to try So Delicious coconut milk creamer, but it still contains sugar unless you get the unsweetened coconut milk found in the dairy section. Unsweetened Almond milk is okay too. A lot of people use canned unsweetened coconut milk, like Thai kitchen, as it is fairly thick. Be aware that if one of the ingredients is evaporated cane juice that;s a code word for sugar.
Watch News Yorkers try to identify the healthiest treat from three Serve, Taste or Trash! Food Game choices bought at a convenience store. You might be surprised by the results.

Some women who survive breast cancer may be more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes, say Ontario doctors who suggest prevention and screening for the metabolic disease.
Knowing that women with diabetes have a higher risk of postmenopausal breast cancer than those without diabetes, researchers set out to explore the reverse: are breast cancer survivors more likely to develop diabetes?
Diabetes specialist Dr. Lorraine Lipscombe of Women’s College Research Institute in Toronto and her co-authors looked at the incidence of diabetes among women in Ontario aged 55 years or older diagnosed with early stage breast cancer compared with women the same age without breast cancer.
The women were followed for an average of six years for the study published in Wednesday’s issue of the journal Diabetologia, the journal of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes.
“The increase in diabetes we saw was modest,” Lipscombe said.
“We certainly don’t think this means that breast cancer causes diabetes or that all breast cancer survivors are at higher risk of diabetes. Rather, this is a study that raises awareness of a potential association between the two conditions.”
The reasons why are unclear and more works needs to be done to determine which women who survive breast cancer could be at higher risk of getting diabetes, the researchers said.
“In the meantime, greater diabetes screening and prevention strategies among breast cancer survivors may be warranted,” the study’s authors concluded.

Superstar Patti LaBelle is so thankful to be aware that she’s living with diabetes that she calls herself a “Divabetic.” The two-time Grammy Award-winning diva borrowed the name, Divabetic, from the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission to empower women to manage their diabetes self-care with confidence, inspiration and knowledge. Divabetic’s national network of health professionals and diabetes educators provide expert advice on food, fitness and self-care management to encourage early action and prevention of diabetes health-related complications. Our mantra “Denial’s Not My Style,” encourages every woman, man and child to live healthy and to be bold, outspoken, educated and stylish like a true diva.
Divabetic was inspired by the late music legend, Luther Vandross and created in 2005 by Max Szadek, who, as Vandross’ assistant of 14 years, witnessed his boss, mentor, and friend struggle in silence and solitude with the diabetes and its related complications. Divabetic has grown from a grassroots movement to help empower Luther fans (African American women) affected by diabetes to a burgeoning and significant presence in the diabetes social media community. President Barak Obama, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter have acknowledged Divabetic for it’s dedication and determination on behalf of the diabetes community.
Patti LaBelle stays on track with managing her blood glucose levels like thousands of other ‘Divabetics’ by eating a healthful diet and exercising regularly—all while maintaining an active schedule of performances as one of America’s most popular entertainers.
“The biggest challenge for me is trying to take my medicine on time,” she says. “Being at the airport and not being able to find a bathroom to go and take my medicine or give myself injections is a challenge that I deal with very often.”
LaBelle strongly urges others to control their blood glucose levels through frequent monitoring and actively taking a part in their own diabetes management.

Diet Pepsi is quietly changing its sweetener ahead of a major rebranding of the soft drink set for next month.
The change comes as PepsiCo Inc. looks to reinvigorate its namesake brands after losing market share to Coca-Cola Co. in recent years.
Cans of Diet Pepsi around the country now list a mix of two artificial sweeteners, a pairing that is commonly found in newer diet sodas. Previously, Diet Pepsi used only aspartame, which is sensitive to heat and breaks down more easily.
PepsiCo spokeswoman Andrea Canabal said that Diet Pepsi using the new sweetener mix started hitting shelves in early December. She said the new mix will be more widely available in the coming weeks.
“It’s not like a light switch. It’ll start appearing as shelf space clears,” she said. In January, Canabal said the company is planning a major ad campaign that will include a new logo with a heart and the theme “Love Every Sip.”
Diet Pepsi remains the No. 7 carbonated soft drink with 4.9 percent of the market, according to Beverage Digest. That’s down from 5.3 percent in 2000. Meanwhile, Diet Coke’s share has increased in that time from 8.7 percent to 9.6 percent. Diet Coke, which still only uses aspartame, overtook regular Pepsi to become the No. 2 soda brand in 2010.

Asparagus can keep diabetes at bay by helping blood sugar levels stay under control while boosting output of insulin, the hormone that helps the body absorb glucose, says a study.
To see if asparagus could help, scientists at the University of Karachi in Pakistan injected rats with chemicals to induce a diabetic state, with low levels of insulin and high blood sugar content.
They said, “This study suggests asparagus extract exerts anti-diabetic effects.”
They then treated half with an extract from the asparagus plant and the other half with an established anti-diabetic drug, called glibenclamide. The rats were fed the asparagus extract in small or large doses every day for 28 days.
Only high doses of the extract had a significant effect on insulin production by the pancreas, the organ which releases the hormone into the bloodstream.
But does anyone really like to eat asparagus? Judging from the contestants who played Mr. Divabetic’s nutrition game, Serve, Taste or Trash! in Central Park, most people prefer to ‘trash’ not ‘treasure’ asparagus.
Before you decide to “trash” a veggie for good, why not try to eat it raw? Raw veggies can be more appetizing than their cooked counterparts to people who aren’t crazy about vegetables. The flavors of raw veggies can be milder than those of cooked ones. And the texture is crispy, rather than mushy. Let Mr. Divabetic inspire you to eat more fruits and vegetables.

Divabetic’s fourth DIVA of Christmas is the legendary Lucille Ball. We’re hoping Lucy will help you not to see your self-care management behaviors in only ‘black or white’ (good or bad), like classic episodes of ‘I Love Lucy,’ but in a more colorful way. Judging yourself too harshly can result in abandoning critical self-care practices completely.
Black-and-white judgments may be more literal than you might expect. A new study finds that people who view information on a black-and-white background are less likely to see gray areas in challenges than those who get the information alongside other colors.
Lucille Ball is famous for saying, “I’m not funny. What I am is brave.” Paired with a touch of poise, a splash of wit and a dash of natural likability, Ball had it all. She was a comedic genius who employed both situation and vaudeville styles as well as she was a powerful, courageous off-stage lady. She was the first woman in television to be the head of a production company, Desilu. Everyone loves Lucy!

There are some of you divas out there who can blame Nutella for adding several pounds to your frame are not going to be happy with Jif’s’ new Chocolate and Mocha Cappuccino Flavored Hazelnut Spreads. These new flavors use natural flavors as opposed to artificial flavors in Nutella.
Both hazelnut spreads contain similar ingredients: (huge amounts of) sugar, palm oil, hazelnuts, cocoa, skim milk, lecithin and flavors. Jif lists natural flavors and Nutella lists vanillin(artificial) and artificial flavors. Jif is bumpy; the flavor notes come out in “spurts”: green hazelnut up front, oily flavor, chocolately notes and a bitter aftertaste. Nutella is smooth, sweet and full. It tastes like roasted hazelnuts blended with chocolate coated milk caramels.
Remember, moderation is needed in the consumption of sugars if you’re living with diabetes. In reference to sugar, moderation means less than 15% of total calories (75 grams or 15 teaspoons) should come from this area.
