Does Drinking Alcohol Make Your Skin Look Older?

April 8, 2013

s-KATHIELEEHODA-large300Whether it’s a night on the town with friends or a glass of wine with dinner, alcohol plays a role in the lives of many people living with diabetes.

Alcohol, along with caffeinated drinks like coffee and soda, will dehydrate you and deplete vital skin nutrients, making your skin appear dull. Doctors have also found that those who drink heavily tend to have less healthy diets, which can deprive the skin of necessary nutrients that keep it looking healthy and young

Drinking alcohol also causes facial blood vessels to dilate, and repeated overindulgence can cause the vessels to dilate permanently, causing red, spidery veins

And if you have a pre-existing skin condition, excessive alcohol use can worsen it.

The happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic talks with skin expert, Sue Perez on tomorrow night’s Diabetes Roundtable podcast inspired by Kathie Lee and Hoda with our featured topic, ‘Drinking Divas & Diabetes.’

Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb always seem to have a drink in hand for the fourth hour of The Today Show.  If you’re around a TV at 10 AM with nothing to do, you should be watching the fourth hour of Today filled with Hoda and Kathie Lee’s theater reviews, occasional dancing, wine reviews and women issues. It’s eclipsed The View as Divabetic’s favorite hour of mid-morning television.

‘I’m On The Red Carpet’ poem by Lorraine Brooks

February 6, 2013
I'm On The Red Carpet

I’m On The Red Carpet

The happy healthcare, Mr. Divabetic wants to help every woman living to makeover her diabetes and feel beautiful.

He’s assembled an all-star line-up of friendly diabetes educators, authors, poets, celebrity photographers and beauty/fashion experts for Divabetic’s upcoming free Diabetes Roundtable “LIVE ON THE RED CARPET SPECIAL” podcast scheduled for Tuesday, February 12, 2013, 6 – 7 PM, EST.

Our favorite ‘divabetic’ poet, Lorraine Brooks wrote a special poem, “I’m On The Red Carpet” for this podcast to encourage women living with diabetes to GLAM MORE, FEAR LESS!

I’m on the red carpet

And no one knows where

I’ve hidden my insulin pump.

My slithery dress

Has a pocket in there

So you cannot see the lump.

And here in my bag

I have all that i need

Just in case of any reaction

My glucagon pen

Some raisins and seeds

Cause i don’t want to miss Hugh Jackman!

I wonder if I will

Get a chance to say

Hello to Robert De Niro

And right over there

Dressed in cool charcoal grey

Is Sally Field, one of my heroes.

I can’t wait to go

To the Governors Ball

And taste Wolfgang Puck’s appetizers

And then when I bolus

To cover it all

No one will be any the wiser!

Because I am prepared

For anything now

Diabetes doesn’t stop this diva

I’m getting ready

To take MY bow

Because I’ve got OSCAR FEVAH!

Sally Field, the two-time Oscar winner who is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Mary Todd Lincoln in the film, Lincoln, inspires Divabetic’s one hour whirlwind of diabetes wellness with a heaping teaspoon of glamour and style.

Salma Hayek Felt as Ugly as ‘Betty’ in her 20′s

April 3, 2012

One of our favorite divas, Salma Hayek recently talked about her painful past.   In her early twenties, Salma struggled with severe acne that sent her into several stages of depression. She reveals that her skin was such a nightmare when she was in her 20s that she pretty much became a reculse.

“I had acne. And this acne was so bad, it sent me into a severe, severe depression,” admits Hayek, who at the time had just given up a life of soap-oper stardom in Mexico to try to make it in Hollywood. “Like I couldn’t leave the house.”

Her acne-induced woes didn’t end there. “I’d wake up in the morning and lie there and touch my face before I got up, just to prepare myself to look in the mirror,” she remembers. “The next stage with that sort of depression is food: too little, or too much. Guess what I did? I mean, I was fat and broken out, I couldn’t leave the house and I couldn’t pay the rent!”

The #1 Skincare Bad Habit!

March 9, 2012

Don’t forget the skin on your neck?!!!! Remember, the man may be the ‘head’ but the woman is the ‘neck.’ Keep turning heads by paying attention to your neck when it comes to skincare.

Many of us pay a lot of attention to our faces, but our necks and chests get neglected,” says Dr. Wu. The skin is thinner on your décolletage — the skin stretching from under your chin to your cleavage — than the skin on your face, and yet often it gets just as much sun exposure. Ignore these areas and you’ll likely see sun damage showing up as blotchy skin, broken capillaries, and scaly patches.

Start treating your neck and chest with the same care you show your face. That means anything you put on your face — moisturizer, sunscreen, or antiaging products — you should apply to your neck and chest as well. Just add a few more drops than you normally use to cover these neglected  areas. If you do, say ‘goodbye’ to your turtlenecks!

Mr. Divabetic’s Favorite Things 2011: Silky Smooth

December 19, 2011

Drum roll, please …. Number #1 on Mr. Divabetic’s Favorite Things List for 2011 is Piper Tate’s Shea Butter Body Collection.  The lather on Piper Tate’s soaps is unbelievable! And the moisturizer is so rich and creamy – you’re sure to feel like a diva (or king) from head to toe.

I have psoriasis so trust me good skin care products are important.   Because my skin can get dry, itchy and irritating during the winter I look for soaps, body wash and lotions that don’t a lot of chemicals. Piper Tate’s luxurious body care collections are handmade in small batches with plant-based and naturally derived ingredients. The lather on their soaps is so rich and creamy – it leaves your skin feeling silky smooth.

Piper Tate believes that your daily moisturizing ritual should not only hydrate your skin but also nurture your soul.  Visit www.pipertate.com  to to treat your skin right.

One of our favorites is Clarisonic Mia Sonic Skin Cleansing System

This facial brush’s ability to transform skin is amazing. Clarisonic brush head executes bi-directional, back-and-forth vibratory movements to cleanse your skin as you move it on your face. The potent sonic waves and vibrations also posses deep penetrating ability for thorough skin cleansing.

The small-sized Clarisonic Mia is very convenient to use. The whole cleansing process takes just sixty seconds. The unit switches off automatically after a minute, so you may not overuse it. Also, the Mia’s light weight, ergonomic design, cordless portability and universal charging options mean you can take along your ultimate beauty product anywhere you go!

Keep in mind that the complete removal of blackheads, disappearance of acne and other secondary benefits are not guaranteed for all users, rather they are only the best results! However, everybody can have a perfect cleansing and exfoliation experience.
