One Soda A Day Raises Diabetes Risk

April 26, 2013

woman-drinking-sodaDrinking just one 12-ounce soda a day may increase the risk of Type 2 diabetes.

A new study is published today (April 24) in the journal Diabetologia  reports people who drank a 12-ounce sugar-sweetened soda daily were 18 percent more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes over a 16-year period compared with those who did not consume soda. And people who drank two sodas daily were 18 percent more likely to have a stroke than those who drank one; those who drank three sodas daily saw the same risk increase compared with those who drank two, and so on.

The results held even after the researchers took into account risk factors for Type 2 diabetes such as age and physical activity levels, body mass index (BMI) and the total daily calorie intake.

The findings agree with earlier studies in the United States, which found daily soda consumption increased the risk of Type 2 diabetes by 25 percent.

How Soda Kills 184,000 People Each Year

April 20, 2013

image001New York City’s controversial ban on large soda drinks may have been blocked  but a  new study suggests around 184,000 global deaths a year can be linked to sugary drinks.

Gitanjali Singh of Harvard University and colleagues examined survey data covering 60 per cent of the world’s population to get a global picture of the consumption of beverages with added sugar. They worked out the obesity rates resulting from sugary drink consumption and looked at the number of deaths from obesity-related diseases to calculate that 184,000 deaths each year could be associated with sugary beverages – about the same number as are killed globally each year by asthma.

Diabetes accounted for about 70 per cent of these deaths; heart disease and certain cancers accounted for the rest.

The study only shows an association between deaths and sugary drinks, butRachel Johnson at the University of Vermont in Burlington says that the idea of a real link is biologically plausible.

“The cost of treating these diseases is going to crush our healthcare system,” says Johnson.

The study was presented today at the American Heart Association’s conference on Epidemiology and Prevention, Nutrition, Physical Activity & Metabolism, in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Mountain Dew’s Kickstart Soda for Breakfast?

March 17, 2013

kickstart-298Mountain Dew for breakfast?

Mountain Dew is launching a new breakfast drink called Kickstart that has Mountain Dew flavor but is made with 5 percent juice and Vitamins B and C, along with an extra jolt of caffeine.

Only 5% juice?

PepsiCo said it doesn’t consider Kickstart to be an energy drink, noting that it still has far less caffeine than drinks like Monster and Red Bull and none of the mysterious ingredients that have raised concerns among lawmakers and consumer advocates.

But Kickstart, which comes in flavors such as “energizing orange citrus” and “energizing fruit punch,” could nevertheless give the company a side-door into the fast-growing energy drink market without getting tangled in any of its controversies.

In a nod to the growing concerns about sugary drinks, for example, Kickstart also uses artificial sweeteners to reduce its caloric content to about half that of regular soda; a can has 80 calories.

Kickstart also contains far less caffeine, at 92 milligrams for a 16-ounce can, compared to other energy drinks. A comparable amount of regular Mountain Dew would have 72 milligrams of caffeine while a can of PepsiCo’s Amp energy drink has 142 milligrams, according to the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

By comparison, a 16-ounce cup of Starbucks coffee has 330 milligrams of caffeine.

Divabetic Soda Wars

Divabetic Soda Wars

New York City’s ban on giant sodas was struck down by a judge this week, but Mayor Michael Bloomberg vowed to appeal the ruling. Mr. Divabetic discusses the latest develops regarding the ban with Cathy Nonas from NYC Health Department on March’s Diabetes Roundtable podcast.

Mayor Bloomberg, who pioneered the 2008 requirement that chain restaurants post calorie counts on their menus, sees the soda law as another way to help those who can’t help themselves from overindulging.

“There’s one public health crisis that has grown worse and worse over the years and that’s obesity,” he said Monday.

The obesity rate among adults in New York City is about 24 percent — up six points in the past decade but lower than the national average of about 34 percent. Meanwhile, the city’s Type 2 diabetes rate outpaces the nation’s, according to city data. Bloomberg has warned that people are killing themselves with sugar, which has been linked to Type 2 diabetes.

A 16-ounce Coke — the largest size allowed under Bloomberg’s proposal — packs 56 grams of sugar, nearly as much as two Snickers bars. Americans drink a lot more soda than anyone else in the world, according to a 2011 Euromonitor study. We also spend about $245 billion each year treating diabetes.

Of course, many factors can contribute to diabetes and other vices may plague countries where soda isn’t a multi-billion-dollar industry. But our movie-theater Coke troughs probably aren’t helping anyone stay healthy. Mouse over the data points below to see how soda consumption around the world stacks up against countries’ rates of obesity and Type 2 diabetes.

New Diet Coke bottles designed by Marc Jacobs

March 13, 2013

Diet Coke named Marc Jacobs as its creative director for 2013 and last night, he revealed his creative designs for the fizzy bottles and cans at a bash in London. Each bottle displays a striking model, one sporting a suit and top hat, another in a feminine pink gown, and the final one portraying a chic woman in monochrome stripes.

As part of year-long partnership with the drink brand set up to celebrate Diet Coke’s 30th birthday, Jacobs designed the collection of bottles and cans, which are set to be unveiled across 11 countries including Britain, France and Iceland.

The illustrations represent the drink’s 30th anniversary, which is why they feature graphic drawings inspired by the ’80s, ’90s, and ’00 decades. “Diet Coke is an icon… and I love an icon,” Jacobs said in a statement.

Cute, right? Too bad we can’t buy them just yet .. the products are only available in eleven European countries including Britain, France and Iceland.

Judge Halts New York City Soda Ban

March 11, 2013
Divabetic

Divabetic

A state judge on Monday stopped Mayor Michael Bloomberg‘s administration from banning the sale of large sugary drinks at New York City restaurants and other venues, a major defeat for a mayor who has made public-health initiatives a cornerstone of his tenure.

The city is “enjoined and permanently restrained from implementing or enforcing the new regulations,” wrote New York Supreme Court Judge Milton Tingling, blocking the rules one day before they would have taken effect. The city’s chief counsel, Michael Cardozo, pledged to quickly appeal the ruling.

In halting the drink rules, Judge Tingling noted that the incoming sugary drink regulations were “fraught with arbitrary and capricious consequences” that would be difficult to enforce with consistency “even within a particular city block, much less the city as a whole.”

The city rules, set to take effect on March 12, didn’t include convenience stores, such as 7-Elevens, and supermarkets, both of which are regulated by the state government.

In his ruling, Judge Tingling found the Board of Health’s mission is to protect New Yorkers by providing regulations that protect against diseases. Those powers, he argued, don’t include the authority to “limit or ban a legal item under the guise of ‘controlling chronic disease.’ “

The board may supervise and regulate the city’s food supply when it affects public health, but the City Charter clearly outlines when such steps may be taken: According to Judge Tingling, the city must face imminent danger due to disease.

“That has not been demonstrated,” he wrote.

Woman Dies After Drinking 10 Liters of Coca-Cola A Day

February 13, 2013

Natasha Harris went into cardiac arrest and when she died, a pathologist found that she had hypokalemia, which means she had lower-than-normal amount of potassium in her blood.

Natasha’s family revealed that she had an addiction to Coca-Cola, claiming that if she didn’t get a hit of at least 10 liters of that pop per day, she would start going CRAZY!

Coroner David Crerar then found that her excessive drinking of Coke led her to cardiac arrhythmia, which causes abnormal electrical activity in the heart. “I find that when all the available evidence is considered, were it not for the consumption of very large quantities of Coke by Natasha Harris,” says Crerar. “It’s unlikely that she would have died when she died and how she died.”

25 Year Old Soda Addict Loses All His Teeth

February 12, 2013
Soda & Tooth Decay

Soda & Tooth Decay

William Kennewell is just 25 years old bur he already wears a full set of dentures.

The hotel worker had to have all of his teeth removed because they rotted from drinking too much soda, the self-professed cola addict tells Adelaide Now.

Kennewell drank between six and eight liters of sugary sodas each day, which is equivalent to about 24 cans of the fizzy stuff in a 24-hour period!

There are 39 grams of sugar in one 12 oz can of coke, meaning Kennewell was bathing his teeth in more than 900 grams of sugar each day – not to mention consuming more than 3,000 calories a day in soda (shockingly, Kennewell doesn’t look overweight from his picture on Adelaide).

Apart from health risks like obesity, cancer, and high blood pressure both the high sugar content and acidity in inherent in sodas have been shown to wear away at tooth enamel, the hard dental tissue that protects our teeth from tooth decay.

According to Adelaide, Australian researchers are now using Kennewell’s story to rile up support for their campaign to place labels on soft drinks that warn about the risks of tooth decay. By Dina Spector

Diet Soda Linked to Depression

January 17, 2013

Diet-Soda-Ups-the-Chances-for-Depression-2Used to relying on a cold soda for a daily pick-me-up? The long-term effects may not be so sunny.

A new National Institutes of Health study found that soda drinkers — particularly those who chose artifically sweetened diet sodas — were more likely to be diagnosed with depression than those who didn’t drink sweetened beverages

The study, lead by Dr. Honglei Chen, a member of the American Academy of Neurology, reports a 30% increased risk of depression in people who drink sweet carbonated beverages, with diet versions being the most problematic.

The research team followed the drink consumption patterns of 265,000 men and women aged 50 to 71. Ten years into the study it was found that those who drank the equivalent of four or more cans of soft drink were 30 per cent more likely to experience depression than those who drank none, and the risk was much higher in those who preferred diet drinks. Interestingly, coffee consumption appeared to have the opposite effect. A four cups of coffee a day drinker was associated with a 10 per cent reduction in depression risk.

Dr. Honglei Chen concedes that the findings do not prove soft drinks cause depression, but “they are consistent with a small but growing body of evidence suggesting that artificially sweetened beverages may be associated with poor health.” Although the researchers suspect the link may be due to the artificial sweetener aspartame, they are as yet unable to identify the precise biological mechanism that might link aspartame to depression. By Jerry Kennard, Health Pro
