When it’s your fifth year anniversary, you comb through the archives and find divalicious memories such as this one. In 2006, the late Mrs. Vandross and I taped one of Divabetic’s very first public service announcements, courtesy of our friends at KYW-TV/CBS 3 in Philadelphia. Enjoy and share if you like.
On Saturday, July 3rd, I was a guest on the radio show, Wright on the Edge, which aired on Washington DC’s WOL Radio. Many of you may recall Divabetic’s two successful Makeover Your Diabetes events in the nation’s capital, so it was great to visit my DC friends via the airwaves. Host Wendy Wright and I discussed issues affecting women living with diabetes, including the lack of time women actually spend with their doctors, which, according to many studies, is a mere seven minutes. Click here to listen to the entire show. I appear in the final segment. I’ll have more to say on the topic of being a diva in the doctor’s office during the August 17th (3-4pm EDT) Clinilabs webinar, “How to Talk to Your Doctor.” Reserve your seat online:
At last week’s Divabetic Club NYC meeting, our special guest, Sunita Singh Maclaren, Founder and President of World Wise, a New York-based global solutions company, spoke to us about the crisis facing India regarding diabetes. She described the current situation and factors contributing to the alarming rise of diabetes and diabetes-related complications. She firmly believes that the way to change what’s happening there is to empower people living with diabetes to become proactive about their daily self-care or as I like to say, “live like divas!” After hearing first-hand the testimonials of women who attended Divabetic’s makeover programs in New York, Sunita believes that our “glam more, fear less” philosophy and entertaining brand of diabetes outreach can successfully impact the lives of women living with diabetes in India just as it has here in America. For this reason, Sunita and World Wise have a strong interest in bringing Divabetic to India. I’d like to second that emotion! I’d be honored to help “makeover” the attitudes of women around the world. My experience traveling abroad working with Luther Vandross, Lionel Richie and Tina Turner leads me to believe our programming can cross lines as well as continents and resonate equally with people from different parts of the world just like American pop culture and music.
As the night progressed, we discussed the challenges and issues of living with diabetes in America. Some of the challenges shared by the ‘divas’ were constant blame from families, difficulties dealing with doctors, lack of information and the day-to-day drain of living with diabetes that can result in burn-out.
It might be hard to imagine that the general mood of this Divabetic Club meeting was positive based on the subject matter. But it was! Not only was the summer sun shining brightly throughout the evening but also our sunny dispositions emerged as we began to comfort each other. Personally, I felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders after I expressed my fears of developing diabetes in my lifetime, given my family’s history of the disease. At the end of the meeting I was reminded how much power there is in creating a safe place for people to lay down their burdens.
Keep inspiring and keep passing the boa!

My 11-year-old son likes treats. There is a container of red licorice on the table I have to resist whenever I enter the kitchen to grab an apple. When his friends come over they ask me to make them ice cream cones or muffins or for some change for the ice cream man. In the meantime I grab a couple squares of dark chocolate. They are just a little on the […]
It's a great time to soak up vitamin D from the sun's rays and breathe in fresh air. It's also a great time to try some light refreshing soup such as cold gazpacho soup.
